Getting Ready for Electronic

Inter-jurisdictional Exchange

What is STEVE?

• State and Territorial Exchange of Vital Events (STEVE) System for electronic vital record exchange and reporting

• Web-based, point-to-point (not hub) communication between “trading partners”

• Uses CDC’s PHINMS messaging protocol

• Allows timely exchange of birth, death, fetal death, and ITOP records between jurisdictions and with NCHS

STEVE is Coming

• RFP released in August 2007

• Proposals received in October and reviewed during November

• SMS of Syracuse, NY selected vendor

• Currently in development

• Late 2008 deployment planned for 5 trading partners (jurisdictions)

• Rollout to all jurisdictions 2009-2010
