Builders Association of Minnesota (BAM) members came from all four corners of the state January 8th through the 10th for the third annual Minnesota Builders Conven-tion in St. Cloud, MN and had a rockin’ good time. The weekend was a great kick-off to the year for the state’s in-dustry with education, experts, awards, association busi-ness, networking and fun.

After participating in committee meetings and the BAM board meeting on Friday the band Jonah & The Whales played rock ‘n roll Friday night as Convention go-ers danced and played heads & tails to raise money for BAM-PAC. The Hospitality Suites opened revealing their rock ‘n roll themes including the Rock Band video game, great music, and juke boxes to go along with the great food, drink and networking. It was a great party.

Saturday began with an awards brunch and speaker, Joe Pusateri, an association member, builder and speaker

who delivered a rousing and educational talk about how to thrive in this economy. Members left inspired with new ideas and many returned for his afternoon class about business negotiating in the home building industry.

During the awards brunch and evening awards and installation banquet eleven BAM awards were presented. The 2009 BAM award winners were announced:

Rochester Area Builders’ Sporting Clay Shoot: 2009 Local Event of the Year

Megan Christianson, Northern Minnesota Builders As-sociation: 2009 Excellence in Service Award

Ferguson Enterprises: 2009 Distinguished Business of the Year

Diane Willenbring, Willenbring Construction: 2009 Citizenship Award

MEMBER NEWS: The EPA’s Renovator, Repair and Painting

Rule (RRP) is the class that we are hosting in Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls. If you dis-turb 2 SQ. feet interior or 20 SQ. feet exterior on a home, built before 1978, you must have this certification. The fine, if not certified, is $37,500 per day. This is a Federal ruling and EPA and HUD will be monitoring this. This includes remodelers, builders, sheet rock-ers, painters, plumbers, handymen or handy-women. I have sent out over 600 letters con-cerning this certification, but had to cancel the Perham class, as only 5 people registered. Spread the word about certification. Just the contractor having the certificate does not qualify for everyone on the job.

January has been a very busy month, start-ing out with the BAM convention. This confer-ence is a very good place to network; meet new people and learn. I attended the State Board meeting, the government relations meeting, as well as, the E O meeting. I hope to see some of our members attend next year. Our Annual Meeting and Christmas party was a night of memories and good cheer. It was fun to see Vicki and others that we don’t usually see.

The Electrical Expo, on the 28th was another learning event. Mike Eidenschink and myself lined up sponsors and we had 15 vendors on hand for the electricians. They received a day of continuing education and I learned of things to change for next year. February looks just as busy with the Builders Expo and RRP classes starting. March is filled with home show prepa-ration and presentation. There won’t be a meet-ing now till April. Please watch for dates and location.

There were no membership losses this month. Thank you to everyone that is renewing.

Well, January is now behind us, and it may not seem like it, but Spring will be here before we know it. Thank you to everyone who braved the icy weather to make it to the Annual Meeting/Christmas party. The evening was a lot of fun with great entertainment and a fun history lesson from Vicki Marthaller, who spoke about her years as the EO and the beginning of our Builders Association. I would like to also thank the committee in charge of the event, Linda & Ed Jutz and Ellie & Dave Francis, for making a great evening.

January was a busy month with an Electrical Expo that was a great success…considering it was the first year. A big thank you to Mike Eidenschink for getting it lined up and contact-ing all the vendors. February brings the Builders Expo, in which builders can receive their continuing education credits and have the opportunity to net-work with associates as well. I encourage all builders to attend these informa-tive events and for the associates to showcase their products and services.

I am looking forward to a great year for our association. There are a lot of oppor-tunities for fun networking planned so everyone can get involved. Stop by the new office and say hi to Sharon and drop off your business cards for her to hand out.

The Call You need to Make!

Only

The Annual Banquet and Christmas Party was a night to appreciate our present members and reminiscing about the past 25 years. Rick Michaelson was our Master of Ceremonies reviewing and introducing the charter members. Charter members in attendance were Gene Hill, Dave Hedman and Gary Heitkamp. We moved on to honoring all of the Spike members. I have a sheet on Spike members, in our organization, included in the newsletter.

Vicki Marthaller and her husband Mark were there to share the oc-casion with us. Vicki was the 1st EO of our association and worked for many years making this association grow. It was a “trip down memory lane and moving forward time.” Rick Michaelson also reviewed all the community projects that have been completed . A list of some of some of the projects is also included as an insert.

Sharon thanked all of those that contributed time and materials to the completion of the office. The night was finished off with music by Tim Eggebraaten…just fabulous, but with the rain coming down many people had to leave to make sure they got home before it turned to ice.
