With the new year and a new decade underway, it is a good time for us to reflect on what we wish for our future. What aspirations do we have, what improvements do we hope to make? Most of us already have a list in mind, but how do we know what to focus on first? How about ‘growth’? Whether it be business or personal, some type of growth is vital to our existence and longevity. However, do not confuse growth with speed. Slow, steady growth is good, as haste can lead to unnecessary stress, poor execution or potential letdowns. If your focus becomes business growth, then it may incorporate adding new products, acquiring new customers, or updating your image. As you go forward, be watchful of your financial ratios to maintain profitability and cash flow. If you seek personal growth, this may entail trying a new exercise regime, reading more inspirational books, or putting more time into your personal relationships. No matter where you put your focus, do it with passion and enthusiasm and the decade of the twenty-tens will be one you enjoy. eliza McGivern, editor

The Australian NutCertified Organic Macadamia Oil The once volcanic regions of Eastern Australia have long been home to an impressive tree with glossy dark green leaves and sweet smelling white blossoms. Known as Kindal Kindal to Indigenous Australians, the Macadamia is now recognised the world over as a delicacy and has become one of the country’s most successfully developed native plant commercial crops.

BioDynamic farming allows for optimal plant growth and crop yield, whilst also offering a significantly lower operating cost. Water and natural fertilisers are used prudently to ensure phytophthora and other fungal damage does not occur.

hArvest

Centuries ago, the nomadic nature of Indigenous life allowed for many Kindal Kindal wild harvests along the eastern strip of the Great Dividing Range. During autumn a community would congregate in an area densely populated with trees and gather the nuts as they fell.

To crack the smooth hard shell, a special “nutting stone” would be used. This was made from a slab of dense rock with in-ground depressions, small enough to perfectly fit the nut. When firmly placed in the depression, a blow from a hammer stone cracked the shell precisely, without smashing the delicious kernel.

Early European settlers discovered mounds of broken shells but it wasn’t until the 1850’s that their attention turned toward the evergreen rainforest tree. It was named Macadamia to acknowledge a prominent Australian scientist of the time, Dr John McAdam, but it was then commercially neglected for a number of decades.

The first commercial plantations were not established in Australia, as you would have imagined, but in Hawaii where seedlings, transported from North Queensland, were planted and instantly flourished in the rich volcanic soil.

It was not until the second half of the 20th century that Australia re-established its industrial interest in the valuable Macadamia nut. With the building of mechanised processing plants, production at a commercial level became viable and through growers’ commitment to quality, the Australian Macadamia is now accepted as an internationally superior product.

Certified Organic Sydney Essential Oil Co’s Certified Organic Macadamia Oil supply partners are proud to uphold this respected reputation through best business practices and by adhering to the strict regulations laid out by Australian Certified Organic (ACO). Holding organic certification for over 20 years their orchards >

cover 52 hectares with 7000 Macadamia integrifolia trees. Located in a highly fertile region of South East Queensland, the plantations thrive in the subtropical climate.

BioDynamic management of the farm ensures soil fertility and increases yield and quality of produce whilst also deterring insect crop damage. This type of organic production emphasises a focus on using natural remedies and traditional agricultural practices rather than relying on synthetics or chemical insecticides.

By composting a mixture of chicken litter and rock dust, a highly effective fertiliser is produced. The chicken litter provides natural forms of phosphorous and nutrient rich organic matter, whilst the quarry by-product, rock dust, provides important minerals. This home grown fertiliser not only offers the plant long term nutrition but is also significantly more cost effective for the farm.

Harvest and Oil ProductionMacadamia nuts are harvested from March through until September. Mechanical harvesting units are driven between the rows of trees collecting the fallen macadamias, which are sent to the factory for dehusking, drying and initial storage. >

Covering 2 hectares, with 7000 Macadamia integrifolia trees, the biodynamic farm produces up to 100 tonnes a year. Below left: In the factory, nuts have their outer fibrous husk removed and are dried for approximately 3 weeks to remove excess moisture. Once dried, the nuts are cracked from their shells and the kernels sent to be cold pressed. Below right: Nuts are stored in silos to dry. This allows the kernel to shrink inside the shell prior to cracking.

hArvest

10

Drying is an important step in production, as it reduces the nuts moisture content from around 20% down to just 1.5%. At the time of harvest the kernel fills the entire shell but after drying, the kernel will have significantly shrunk, which enables the shell to be cracked without any internal damage.

The oil is extracted from the white macadamia kernel. In the cold press extraction method, a steel expeller screw press is used. Although some heat is created by press friction in the carefully engineered equipment, the actual nuts are not pre-cooked so all the natural anti-oxidants, vitamins and other nutrients are retained in the oil.

The macadamia nut offers a remarkably high oil yield, of approximately 50%. To produce 1kg of oil, 2kg of kernels are needed. The by-product of oil extraction is a protein powder that is used for animal stock feed.

Macadamia Oil & CosmeticsWhilst commonly used in culinary applications due to its high heat stability and pleasant nutty flavour, the demand for macadamia oil in the cosmetic industry is ever increasing.

High in monounsaturated fatty acids and palmitoleic acid, this golden coloured oil offers wonderful moisturising properties to skincare products.

Closely resembling natural skin sebum, it promotes a soft and supple complexion, whilst enhancing skin elasticity and offering anti-ageing effects. It is also recognised for its soothing and healing properties which are beneficial for scar tissue and sunburn.

Its easy skin penetration makes it ideal for massage applications and will leave the skin feeling velvety and smooth.

We invite you to try our Certified Organic Macadamia Oil in your own skincare products today. We know the results will impress you. 1

11

Nourishing & anti-ageing: Macadamia nut oil is high

in Palmitoleic acid (18-25%) which is fundamental to

delaying skin and cell ageing. It is an excellent choice

when formulating specialty anti-ageing products as well

as moisturising face and eye creams. Its low-odour,

pale colour and superior dispersibility also make it a

great choice for massage oil.

When your sales demand is growing, there are many benefits that can be gained by upsizing your batches. The major plus is an increase in your profit margins as you save time on labour and achieve economies of scale when purchasing your raw materials.

Luscious consistency: It’s wise to invest in good equipment, as it can mean the difference between producing a smooth, beautifully textured cream or lotion, or one that splits and needs to be thrown away.

What do you do when you’ve outgrown your Bains Marie?

1

Most handmade product hobbyists start in the kitchen with a few pots and pans, a good recipe and a dose of courage to experiment with a variety of ingredients until the ‘perfect’ recipe is created.

Positive feedback from friends and family often then encourages the idea of starting a new small business. More advocates enjoy and come back again for your unique concoctions. The pots and pans get put to one side and a bench-top Bains Marie is acquired to help you keep up with growing demand.

Your products are flying off the shelf as fast as you can make them, and you can’t keep up with demand. So what do you do when a five-litre batch in your Bains Marie is no longer enough?

Well, there a few options to consider... if you think you are ready to make the jump to 200L+ batches, then a contract manufacturer could be a solution. Alternatively, if you have the space, setting up your own small scale manufacturing facility may be worth considering.

However, if 10-50L batches are more realistic, then renting or buying some more appropriate equipment would be the best option. Professional kitchen equipment suppliers such as www.silverchef.com.au or www.packserv.com.au, are a great place to start.

For cold mixing active ingredients into a pre-made base product, a 10-40L industrial dough mixer is ideal. They are heavy duty stainless steel with variable speeds and interchangeable blades, paddles and wire whisks for creating a variety of textures.

Hot mixing emulsions from scratch, will require additional

pieces of equipment such as urns, or heated or jacketed tanks. You would need one tank for each water and oil phase for heating and an industrial mixer to complete the blending and emulsifying.

A few more considerations when hot mixing include the hygiene and temperature control of your manufacturing environment as well as the quality of your water supply. Clean water is essential to minimise bacterial contamination of your product. You can certainly purchase purified water, but it may be more cost effective to install a filtration system.

Once you have produced your product, you will want to get it into its packaging as quickly as possible. Investing in a bottling or filling machine and/or a bench top labeller, will enable even faster completion of each product run.

Post-manufacture and fill, clean up and waste disposal are the final stages. Residual oils, butters, waxes, creams and balms cannot be put down the sink. They will need to be captured, stored and collected by authorised disposal service providers to ensure our waterways are not polluted. Contact your State government for information.

Taking the next step in upsizing your batches has many benefits such as increasing your sales potential, reducing labour time and costs, as well as enabling you to enjoy greater savings on raw materials as economies of scale kick in. But most importantly, it will enable you to spend more time on developing customer relationships, and on your sales and marketing initiatives to continue to grow your business. 1

As with our other senses, aromas can affect our moods and stimulate memory recall. They register in the subconscious mind and connect to our emotions. They can uplift, relax, surprise or bring feelings of wellbeing. Aromas not only intensify but they also enhance your visual surroundings or personal interactions. They can also help to lock your brand in your customer’s mind by connecting an event or product to a particular smell.

The effect of aroma on any individual is subject to a number of elements. This could include how the aroma is experienced, where the aroma is experienced or how strong the aroma is. Aromas also cause different effects according to the age, sex and personality type of the person. Previous associations to certain smells also play a key part and this is why a unique Signature Scent gives you the opportunity to create new associations that are only connected to your business or brand.

At work, aroma can be used to increase work rates, in a gym they can invigorate your work out. In a salon, they can enhance relaxation and in a product they can entice a purchase.

Sydney Essential Oil Co. provides a professional Signature Scent blending service tailored to meet your specific brief and budget. We understand the need for speed-to-market with new ideas and products, so we pride ourselves on providing fast reliable turnaround times. To get things started, talk to us today with your brief, assess the samples we send you, request any changes, sign off when you are completely happy, and order when it suits you. Many health experts will agree that most

ailments can be linked to stress. Stress

manifests internally within our body

systems or can be brought on by external

environmental influences. If left unattended,

stress leads to premature ageing, emotional

imbalances and niggling body pains.

The good news is that massage is a highly

effective way to help manage your stress.

The more frequent the massages, the more

relaxed you’ll become, giving you increased

energy, sharper concentration, more restful

sleep, improved circulation, more balanced

moods, increased joint flexibility and an

overall greater sense of well-being.

The underlying commonality between

different massage techniques is that they all

work on relaxing and improving the

functionality of our body systems.

Holistically, each system is linked; therefore

an improvement in one area provides

complimentary benefits to the others. Below

are the key areas that are aided by massage.

the Circulatory system comprises the heart,

arteries, veins, blood and other related

pathways. Massage improves blood

circulation and delivery of oxygen and vital

nutrients to every cell and all parts of the

body. Good circulation enables the body to

flush toxins to prevent congestion in the

tissue or the organs.

the Lymphatic system comprises lymph

capillaries, lymph ducts, lymph vessels and

lymph nodes. The lymph network cleanses

filters and removes waste from the body. It

relies solely on muscular movement to do

its work. Waste must move quickly to avoid

tissue damage, water retention or cellulite

build up. Regular exercise along with

regular massage will optimise the body’s

ability to prevent toxin build up, improve

skin condition and enhance immunity.

the Musculoskeletal system is the most

obvious area that enjoys the benefits of

massage as it consists of our muscles,

skeleton, connective tissues and joints.

Tense muscles throw the body out of

alignment, limit our range of movement

and cause pain. Poor posture, muscular

cramping and joint pain will all improve

with regular treatments.

the Nervous system is the most pivotal

system as it is responsible for communication

between all of the other systems. It senses

changes within the body, then interprets and

responds to the changes through muscular

and glandular reactions. If this system is not

functioning well our body experiences a

variety of reactions such as feelings of

anxiety, physical exhaustion, increased heart

rate, digestion problems, muscular tension,

headaches, skin irritations, mental fatigue or

depression. Massage is an excellent way to

relax both the body and mind to reduce

these symptoms and to improve your sense

of well-being and inner peace. 1
