A fire broke out at theteaching block of the AI-IMS here on Saturday, de-stroying samples and med-ical reports and forcingevacuation of some pa-tients, though no one wasinjured, officials said.

Patients from some floorsof the AB ward, close to theMicrobiology departmentwhere the blaze started ataround 5 pm, were evacuat-ed along with those in oper-ation theatres above it asthe smoke spread, theysaid, adding the fire wasdoused within two hours.

A Delhi Fire Services De-partment (DFS) officialsaid 22 fire tenders wererushed to the site after theyreceived a call. The Mi-crobiology department’s vi-rology unit on the secondfloor of the teaching blockhas been completely gutted,sources said.

However, there was no ca-sualties and the coolingprocess is underway, a firedepartment official said.

A Kerala nun Saturday saidshe has filed an appeal be-fore the Vatican againstFranciscan Clarist Congre-gation’s decision to expelher from it even as the con-gregation tightened itsstance by issuing a letter tothe her elderly mother totake her back home.

Sister Lucy Kalappura,who took part in a protestagainst former bishop of Ja-landhar diocese in connec-tion with a rape case was ex-pelled by the FranciscanClarist Congregation earlythis month for ‘failing to

give a satisfactory explana-tion’ for her lifestyle “in vio-lation of the proper law ofthe FCC.”

“I have filed an appeal. Anemail was sent to Vaticanyesterday (Friday). I havealso sent via post today (Sat-urday) to Vatican as well astheir representatives inNew Delhi,” the expellednun told reporters atWayanad RPT Wayanad.

The nun said the Congre-gation has sent a letter toher mother on August 10asking her to take herdaughter back to home fromthe convent in Karackamala(in Wayanad). In her letterto the nun’s mother dated

August 10, FCC’s ProvincialSuperior in Mananthavadysaid the nun should leavethe convent if she failed tomake “recourse against thedecree” within 10 days fromthe day on which she re-ceives the communication.

Sister Kalappura saidlegally the congregationcould not ask her to leavethe convent since she hasfiled the appeal challengingit’s decision. The Congrega-tion had accused sister LucyKalappura of publishing po-ems, purchasing a car andtaking part in a protestagainst a rape accused for-mer bishop of Jalandhardiocese.

In one of the biggest drugseizure in Manipur, policeon Saturday busted a hero-in manufacturing factoryand seized 183 kg of drugsworth over Rs 100 crore ininternational market fromThoubal district, a seniorpolice officer said.

Ganesh Miskin, the hitmanallegedly involved in thekilling of journalist GauriLankesh, had also shot liter-atteur and researcher Dr MM Kalburgi dead in August2015, according to the specialinvestigation team (SIT).

SIT, probing the case, stat-ed this in a charge sheet itfiled in the district court ofHubballi-Dharwad on Satur-day. The other accused in thecase were Amol Kale,Praveen Prakash Chatur,Vasudev BhagavanSuryavamshi, Sharad

A woman who has spentone fourth of the period ofthe maximum sentence forthe offence she is chargedwith as undertrial prisonershould be released immedi-ately, Union Law MinisterRavi Shankar Prasad sug-gested on Saturday.

The minister was speak-ing before a gathering ofjudges and lawyers at theinauguration of 17th all In-dia meet of the State LegalServices Authorities here.

“I have certain sugges-tions to give on this wholebail provisions for undertri-als,” Prasad said, referringto section 436-A of the Codeof Criminal Procedure.

Under 436-A, if an under-trial has been in prison forhalf the period of the maxi-mum sentence for the of-fence, he or she must be re-leased on bond. It also pro-vides for review commit-tees headed by districtjudges to examine such cas-es where undertrials arelanguishing in jail.

“The review committeeneeds to work more effec-tively. There is need to fur-ther reinforce the imple-

mentation of this provi-sion,” Prasad said, addingthat in 50 per cent of cases,the accused spends entireperiod of sentence for theoffence as undertrial pris-oner.

“I would recommend thatif a woman prisoner hasspent 25 per cent of her sen-tence period as a trial pris-oner, she should be immedi-ately released,” he added.

He also expressed concernabout the number of pend-ing criminal appeals, seek-ing fast-track hearing ofcases which are pending forten years or more.

Hailing the country’s legalsystem, the law ministersaid Indian courts, led bythe Supreme Court, rein-forced the constitutionalvalues, which played a greatrole in making India what itis today.

The world looks upto In-dia and follows some of theinitiatives the country hastaken, Prasad added. “Lastyear I had gone to the Ba-hamas for Commonwealthconference. I talked aboutDigital India pro-grammes...and all theAfrican countries’ law min-isters came to me to knowabout it,” he said.

Hit by a malfunction in itsfare collection system forabout two and half hours onSaturday morning, Chen-nai Metro Rail allowed com-muters to use the servicesfree of cost without ticketsand smart cards.

When passengers couldnot be issued tokens (tick-ets) after fare collection due

to the glitch, the authoritiesallowed passengers to pro-ceed with their onwardjourney sans the usual tick-ets or smart cards.

“First, it was thought thatthe malfunction was onlyin one station. When we re-alised it has affected thesystem in all other stationsas well, the passengerswere allowed to use theservices without tickets,” aMetro Rail official said.

For sometime after theglicth was detected, papertickets were issued and lat-er it was dispensed with, headded. Passengers saidthey welcomed the initia-tive, which has avoided in-convenience.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sat-urday slammed the BJP after a full page adver-tisement was published in the local edition of avernacular daily in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao onIndependence Day, featuring Prime MinisterNarendra Modi and Kuldeep Sengar, the rape-accused former BJP leader. “Enough isenough,” the Congress General Secretarytweeted, asking whether the top BJP leaderswill comment as Sengar’s photo was displayedalong with theirs.

“CBI submitted the report. Supreme Courthas also reprimanded but BJP people still haverape accused Kuldeep Singh Sengar in theirhearts. His photo is there with big leaders ofBJP. Will they comment?” Priyanka Gandhitweeted, adding #EnoughIsEnough.

The poster also features Home Minister AmitShah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister YogiAdityanath.

However, the poster was defended by thechairman of the Ungu Nagar Panchayat, whohad paid for the advertisement. “He is MLA ofour area. That is why his photo is there. Till thetime he is our MLA his photo can be put,” AnujKumar Dixit was quoted by a news agency.

Anuj Kumar Dixit, who was reportedly in-ducted into the BJP by Kuldeep Sengar, deniedhis ad, which also featured Kuldeep Sengar’swife, Sangeeta Sengar, Chairwoman of the ZilaPanchayat, had any links with political parties.

BJP spokesperson Shalabhmani Tripathi hasdenied party links to the poster.

“It might have been someone’s personalchoice to give Sengar’s photograph. It has noth-ing to do with the party or the state govern-ment. We have no sympathy for Sengar,” he toldnews agency PTI. Kuldeep Sengar had been ex-pelled by the BJP earlier this month, amid crit-icism the party had only acted after concertedoutrage against earlier inaction.
