Celebrate the Ministry Of
Pastor Munz On
Sunday, October 27th
One Service at 10:00 am Followed by
Brunch
You are very, very, welcome there!
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Former Bishop Stephen Bouman sometimes would say to pastors
in the fall, “Are you ready to crank it up again?” With all the ac-
tivities that get going in September, it’s always a bit hectic
making sure everything is on track. Additional worship services,
Sunday School Rally Day, confirmation classes, Jr. and Sr. Youth
groups, an adult study program, committee planning, as well as
special events like the Golf Outing and Oktoberfest are all part of cranking it up for the
fall schedule.
When I chose the end of October retirement date last fall, I wanted to have a chance to
“crank it up again” so that everything would be moving along as smoothly as possible
before my departure. I thought it would be best for the congregation to be operating on
all cylinders going into the period of transition.
So far that seems to be working well with the Council and committees taking on some
additional tasks to make sure that the bases are covered and all the worship, education,
fellowship, outreach, social ministry and youth activities are carried on without inter-
ruption.
As the days inch closer to that concluding date, I’m finding that there’s so much to ac-
complish that there’s not much time to think about life after October. I’ll still be clean-
ing out some files and packing the many books in my office. Elizabeth and I have al-
ready been recruited for an extended grandchild sitting stint in mid-November. It will
be difficult for me to realize that my official tenure as pastor will be at an end, but I
know that the congregation will carry on as it always has for the past 98 years. I look
back with deep emotion on our ministry together. I also will look forward to hearing
about your continued commitment to the mission of Jesus Christ and hope to see you
all for a special occasion now and again.
Faithfully,
New Home Phone: (631) 650-5140

HOLDING YOUR FAMILY TOGETHER
5 Simple Steps to Help Bring Your Family Closer
to God and Each Other
This is the title of a new book written by the Lu-
theran pastor who writes our confirmation curric-
ulum. On the five Wednesdays of October (2nd-
30th) from 7-8:15 P.M. we’ll be discussing this
powerful book.
Parents wouldn’t think of sending their children
to bed without dinner or without brushing their
teeth or other nightly rituals to keep their children
healthy. Yet often they may overlook taking some specific time to share
their day together as a family, speaking about the Word of God and praying
together. This book outlines ways to instill spiritual practices in our chil-
dren by intentionally making it a priority to take 5-10 minutes to experience
caring, comfort and blessing every night.
Please register by calling the office or speaking to Pastor so that we can or-
der the proper number of books.

DEACON’S CORNER
OCT. 2013
It hardly seems possible that the year’s notice that Pastor gave us when he an-
nounced his retirement has already passed. I know from the many conversa-
tions I have had with different congregational members, that we are all feeling
many mixed emotions. We are happy for Pastor and Elizabeth that they will
have time to do whatever they want to do, but at the same time, we have a feel-
ing of loss and actual grief. Added to this is a heightened sense of anxiety. I
believe that these feelings are perfectly normal. I also believe that nobody will
understand these feelings except your fellow congregational members, which is
why we need to stay together as a family in Christ.
Pastor has faithfully served this congregation for 30 years and we will honor
him by remaining a congregation focused on its mission to proclaim the Gospel
in word, sacrament and service. In order for that to happen, each and every one
of us will need to step up and pay attention. Pay attention to who is sitting next
to you during Worship and if they are not there the following Sunday, give them a call! We need to be
shepherds for each other! Step up and volunteer to help in some way, there are countless opportunities for
service. Offer to take charge of an event or committee, strong leadership and someone to follow through on
the details is always needed.
When Pastor retires, the ministry that happens here at Christ Lutheran church will not end. As Pastor ex-
plained last Sunday, we will have an interim pastor until a new pastor is called. A Steering Committee has
already been formed composed of leaders in key positions who will meet regularly to address problems
during the transition period. The Church Council will still oversee the business of the congregation, com-
mittees will still meet, all our Sunday Servers (ushers, greeters, acolytes, Eucharistic ministers, assisting
ministers etc.) will continue to serve. Sunday School and Confirmation classes will still be held. Eventual-
ly, a Call Committee will be formed and we will have a new pastor.
In Reclaiming the “C” Word, author Kelly Fryer describes a congregation by saying “A church on God’s
mission isn’t a building or a building plus a pastor. It’s people – people who carry out God’s mission to the
world.” We need to remember that we have to carry on participating in God’s mission to the world.
It goes without saying that we all will miss Pastor and Elizabeth. For many of us Pastor Munz has been the
only pastor we have had in this congregation. Pastor has developed many relationships over the last 30
years with members of this congregation. It is going to be difficult for both him and us to adjust to the
change.
I ask all of you to keep Pastor and Elizabeth in your prayers. From the ELCA book of occasional services:
Eternal God, we give you thanks for your servant William Munz, and for his ministry in your
church. Give him the grace to remain faithful in your service
now and evermore; and grant that those deeds begun in your name may, by the power of your Holy
Spirit, grow and flourish; through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Amen.
In Christ,
Janet O’Mara
WORSHIP AND MUSIC
SURVEY RESULTS
The Worship and Music Committee has met several times to go over the results of the
survey that was conducted last year. The overall impression is that the congregation is
satisfied with the worship experience here at Christ Lutheran.
There were some areas such as alternate worship times and the introduction of new
hymns, which will require more specific questions for follow-up.
The survey has also given us some things to consider during the transition period when
we are in the process of calling a new pastor. It will provide us with valuable infor-
mation when we are completing our Congregational Profile. I would like to thank all of
you who took the time to complete this lengthy survey and ask everyone to participate
when we are conducting some follow-up “mini-surveys”.
