Getting StartedGetting Started

Keep These Suggestions in Mind:1. Always read the label! Follow all label directions

exactly to ensure a successful wood finishing project. Payparticular attention to all “DANGER and CAUTION”instructions.

2. Protect your work area by laying lined drop cloths, cardboard or plastic over the floor area.

3. Be sure the area is warm and dry and it has adequateventilation and good lighting.

Pre-Plan for a Successful ProjectFor best results have everythingyou need before you start. Thecondition of the wood you arefinishing will help you decidewhat materials you need to dothe job, such as scrapers, brushes, sandpaper, stir sticks, etc.

New Bare WoodYou may prefer to stain thewood and apply a polyurethane,or you can simply apply thepolyurethane over the naturalwood.

Old Clear Finishes inGood ConditionA finish in good condition canbe covered with a fresh coat ofpolyurethane once the surfacehas been cleaned and properlysanded.

UGL® Professional Strength D-GlossWater-Based Liquid Sander & CleanerPrepares surfaces for recoating. Removessurface contaminants and provides a slight“etching” of the surface allowing subsequentcoatings to bond. Dulls paint, enamel, varnishand polyurethane.

Some polyurethane finishes do not adhere toshellac or lacquer surfaces. It is advisable toremove these finishes before recoating.

To determine the finish type use a little nail polish removeron an inconspicuous spot. Nail polish remover will softenshellac or lacquer.

Old Paint or Finishes in Poor ConditionIf the finish has begun to peeland crack, or the finish isbroken or chipped, removecompletely to bare wood. Usea mechanical abrator or a paintand varnish remover.

WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you may release lead dust.LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS,SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMENSHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator tocontrol lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contactingthe National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on towww.epa.gov/lead.

Removing Old Finishes

ZAR® Paintand VarnishRemover orUGL®

ProfessionalStrengthFastrip Paint and VarnishRemover is ideal for removing old

finishes from vertical or horizontal surfaces. Wear chemicalresistant rubber gloves and safety glasses. Stripping projectsshould be done outdoors in a shady, dry area. Apply a liberalcoat and allow from 5 to 25 minutes for the Remover to dothe work. If after a gentle scraping you can’t remove thebottom layer of paint, apply an additional coat of Removerover the Remover previously applied. Remember, let theRemover do the work for you.Scrape off the old, softened finishwith a wide putty knife.

For safety, always scrape awayfrom you. Be careful not to gougethe wood. In hard-to-reach areas,an old toothbrush or steel woolwill be helpful.

Use RemoverProducts Outdoors

If you must work indoors be sure touse a non-sparking fan and exhaustall vapors away from you.

Surface PreparationSurface Preparation

Unfinished BareWood SurfacesKeep in mind, even “new”bare wood can be dirty.Remove all hardware, knobs, hinges, etc.

Remove all dirt, dust, grease, wax and fingerprintswith a cloth dampened withpaint thinner. Allow thesurface to dry.

Fill any holes, cracks orstaple marks with ZAR®

Wood Patch. Allow patch todry and sand according todirections.

A Smooth FinishRequires ASmooth StartAlways sand in the directionof the wood grain. On flatsurfaces, use long straightstrokes. For roundedsurfaces, such as legs orknobs, be sure to sand in thedirection of the grain.Sanding against the grain willscratch or scar the woodsurface which may showthrough on your finishedpiece. Do not over sand. Thiscould fill the pores of thewood by polishing the surface and prevent proper stainpenetration.

Bare Wood: Sand thoroughly using successively finer gradesof sandpaper up to 220 grit, until the surface feels smooth tothe touch.

Previously Finished Wood in Good Condition: Lightsanding with 220 grit sandpaper will help the wood stainor clear finish adhere. After sanding, remove all dust, using a tack cloth or a rag dampened with paint thinnerand allow to dry.

The Correct ProcedureFollow the staining procedure diagram below. Work onone section of the door at a time. The numbers correspondto the order in which you should work. The arrowsindicate the direction of the grain for each area of thedoor. Here is how to proceed:

1. Stain the inside panels first.

2. Next, work on the inside vertical boardsbetween the panels.

3. Then, work on the inside horizontal boards. (It isimportant to take special care where horizontal andvertical members join. On steel doors, it is your jobto make the joints look as natural as possible. It isnot hard, but you must exercise care.)

4. The outside vertical boards are the last areas on theface of the door to be stained.

5. Finally, stain the door edges. Follow the sameprocedure when you apply the tone coat and clearfinish. Allow the whole project to dry thoroughlyand start enjoying your door.

Staining Steel DoorsZAR® Wood Stain and the ZAR® Graining Tool are per-fect for giving primed steel or painted doors the richlook of wood. ZAR® Wood Stain’s special high pigmentformula makes it ideal for wood graining.

Note: Certain steel doors, such as Taylor, Crest Metaland Perma-Door® have a grain embossed in them. Forembossed door surfaces refer to Staining EmbossedGrain Surfaces, page 21, of this brochure.

Surface PreparationSteel doors come already primed and are usually gray, buff orwhite. Whatever the door color, the procedure is the same.

For best results, lay the door onpadded sawhorses. Remove allhardware. Clean all dirt, dust andgreasy stains with a clothdampened with paint thinner ormineral spirits.

Wood graining is completed using2 steps. First apply a grain coat.Once the grain coat is dry, apply atone coat for the rich look ofwood.

Applying the Grain CoatFollow the Staining ProcedureDiagram on page 16. This willhelp you achieve beautiful results with the least amountof time and effort.

Stir ZAR® Wood Stainthoroughly. Before graining, wipe on a thin, uniformcoat of ZAR® Wood Stainusing a lint-free cloth orfoam brush. Next use thegraining tool to create awood grain pattern.

For doors previously painted with a darkcolor paint or for a more natural woodappearance, apply a buff colored (lighttan) base coat. Allow base coat to drythoroughly. We recommend a semi-glossor eggshell finish paint as a basecoat.
