Challenges• 1. Yam traders complained of poor road
network, from farm to market and from market to urban markets as well as within the market.
• 2. Taxes paid to agencies: community, produce, Police, shed space. These taxes increase the unit sejjing price of the tubers.
• 3. Constant communal clashed and climate change are threats.
A member of CGIAR consortium www.iita.org
Conclusions• Prices of yams have increased between
40 to 70% within the last 4 years.• Demand for yams is increasing.• Prices in peak season are about 50%
cheaper than at slack (May Jun) season.• Reasons for increase in price include
climate change (drought and flooding) as well as communal clashes.
