FELSJoseph Fels, 97, of Center City, passed awayat home on November 27, 2016. He wasborn in Philadelphia to Frances and MitchellFels on May 28, 1918. He is survived by hiswife of 63 years, Lenore Fels (nee Rubin),two sons, Robert Fels of Boca Raton Floridaand Richard Fels (Carla) of Ridgewood, NewJersey and New York City and three grand-daughters, Molly Fels, Laura Fels and SarahFels. The oldest of four children he is alsosurvived by his sister, Vickie Alexander ofFlorida and was predeceased by his brothers,Marty Fels and Arthur Fels. A graduate of Ol-ney High School, he served in the Coast Artil-ler during World War II. He was member ofthe Hackenberg Masonic Lodge Number 19for more than 50 years and a long-time mem-ber of the Jewish War Veterans South Phil-adelphia Post 98, Cardoza Lodge #400 BrithShalom, the Philadelphia American Legion,and a past PASR member. Joseph and Len-ore Fels have been members of Congrega-tion Beth Or in Maple Glen Pennsylvaniasince 1958. After a long career in the amuse-ment arcade business, Joseph earned ateaching certificate at Temple University andtaught high school at the Swenson SkillsCenter. He was a lover of the Jersey Shoreand instilled a passion for scouting and theoutdoors in his two sons. In his retirementyears he rekindled an interest in philately, be-came an avid stamp collector and cultivated alarge circle of fellow stamp aficionados. Atrue native of the City of Brotherly love, hewas devoted to his granddaughters and allremember him as a welcoming friend. TELLERIrene Braun Teller,Feb.20,1919-Dec.12,2016was the ultimate survivor, who felt deep prideand joy in her family. She was a talentedseamstress and cook, even as her eyesightdeclined later in life. She laughed with herwhole body, and had a song in her heart,despite her hardships and losses. She wasfeisty throughout each day of her life, even inthe final days, and fought hard to have thelong life she felt she deserved. Born in TisaShalomon in Hungary, as the youngest of sixchildren, she was the only member of herfamily to survive the Holocaust in Europe.She married Zoltan Teller in 1946. They fledfrom Hungary to a Displaced Persons Campin Germany, where their daughter Judy wasborn in 1947, before immigrating to NewYork in 1949. In New York, Irene and Zoltanbuilt their American Dream. Their son Lennywas born in 1952. They opened a dry clean-ing store followed by a men's clothing store.They worked hand-in-hand throughout theirlives, enduring many hard years, before joy-fully retiring to Florida. She is survived by herchildren Judy Rohtbart and Lenny Teller,their spouses Meyer Rohtbart and Leah Tell-er, and was the beloved Bubby to sevengrandchildren and twenty great-grandchil-dren. WEISSHarold Weiss, age 92, passed away peace-fully on Friday, December 2, at his Margateresidence. He was born in Philadelphia onFebruary 23, 1924, the son of Mendel andSylvia (Chirlin) Weiss. After graduatingSouth Philadelphia High School, he enlistedin the U.S. Air Army Corps, the predecessorto the Air Force. He was very proud of hisservice in World War II, where he was trainedas an airplane mechanic and served on aNavy ship in the Pacific Ocean when theatomic bombs were dropped on Japan. Har-old graduated from Temple University andbecame a CPA. He soon left the accountingprofession, investing in several businessesand eventually developing a local shoppingcenter. Outside of his family, who he was ex-tremely devoted to, Harold’s lifelong passionwas flying. He was an instrument rated air-plane pilot, and his greatest thrills were fly-ing his single engine plane over the RockyMountains and island hopping in the Carib-bean. He was the author of a biography of theimmigrant experience (And The Streets WerePaved With Gold), a proud Mensa memberand painter. He is survived by two sons,Richard (Portia) of Newport Beach, and Mi-chael of Linwood, and his sister Elaine Soko-loff of Elkins Park. Also surviving are hisgrandchildren: Sean, Sarah (Maor), Reming-ton and Madison; two great-grandchildren:Mia and Joshua; and many loving nieces andnephews. He was preceded in death by hissister Shirley Coff, brother Alvin (Buddy)Weiss, and grandson Joshua Weiss. He wasdeeply loved and will be sorely missed. ZALDr. H. Michael Zal, age 75, died on Decem-ber 16, 2016. He was a Psychiatrist for 43years, he was a Clinical Professor at PCOM,and fellow of the American College of Osteo-pathic Neurology and Psychiatry and a distin-guished life fellow of the American Psychiat-ric Association. He was president of theAlumni Association at Central High School210 Class. He received many awards, includ-ing 4 Chaplin Leader of Legion awards. Win-ner of the 1998 Eric W. Martin memorialaward presented by the American Writers As-sociation. He was Chief of Staff at Phil-adelphia Psychiatric Institute. He got theFrancis Larsin Memorial Award for excel-lence in medical writing by the AmericanMedical Writers Association. He had his owncable TV show for 4 years called, MentalNotes with Dr. Michael Zal, which he re-ceived 2 awards for excellence. He wroteover 100 articles, chapters in books, and lec-tures. He was editor of The POMA Journaland wrote 5 books, his last one is entitled "APsychiatrist Guide to Successful Retirementand Aging; Coping with Change".
