PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By John Hommel

September 2014 President’s Message

Hope everyone had an enjoyable summer!!

The weather is still nice so take advantage of it while you can and get outdoors, winter will be upon us before you know it.

The Civic Board has been at work over the summer months, keeping up with some of the happenings around town, planning the 100 year celebration for 2015, getting the Fun Run details in place and continuing to not only keep Carle Place great but try to make it better than ever.

Some progress has been made; the Board became an intermediary between the developers of the Carle Place Gardens Senior housing project and Nassau County and with the help of Legislator Schaefer we were able to at least finally get the sidewalks fixed. We also have been in contact and trying to assist with the development of the Albraco Metals site, which at this point has passed all environmental requirements and is now at the point of having plans submitted and approved by the Town of North Hempstead. The yellow lines were repainted along Cherry Lane, a three year ongoing request, but it was finally done.

These are just a few of the issues of concern and there is more to be worked on, but we will continue to be diligent and pressing in getting what we here in Carle Place deserve. The community has come out strong when it matters and it is encouraging to see the commitment and caring of all those that help make Carle Place a great place to live and raise a family. When working together with a collective voice, we can get things done.

The guest speaker at our September meeting will be a representative from the Nassau County Police Department Third Precinct which covers Carle Place. Come out to the general meetings to see what is going on around town and bring your questions for our guest speakers. All general meetings are listed on the Civic website, in the school calendar, the Frog Horn, and on the community board in town and reminders are sent on the Facebook page!

A special THANK YOU to John Viscusi and Tim Stellato for volunteering and donating their time to cut the grass by the tree it town. And thank you to Mr. Paul Monoco for his many years of doing this as well. Check out our new website at www.cpcivicassociation.com !!! Join today!! Let’s work together!

4 EYE OF THE HURRICANE By Bob Greco

Make room O river of our home! For other feet in place of ours, And in the summers yet to come, Make glad another Feast of Flowers! We mourn the passing of Marie Pizza. She was our neighbor and friend since 1953, and she passed away with the same spunk and smile that sustained her all those years. She battled her health challenges to the end, but always with a smile and a humor that was her trademark as she, together with her husband Frank, raised their six children and dedicated herself to her children and grandchildren. She exhibited that example of commitment, care, and concern for her family, her church, and her community always. She taught us every day in every way to smile at Time, and set to music all our years, in the eye of the hurricane.

The summer is over and we begin another Civic Association Year-- the 100th anniversary of the Hamlet and School District of Carle Place. As we begin our community's 100th anniversary, I offer an excerpt from the "The Laurels," a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier written 144 years ago, and modified by me here to fit our circumstances. The light wind blowing off the land Is burdened with old voices; through Shut eyes I see how lip and hand The greeting of old days renew. O friends whose hearts still keep their prime, Whose bright example warms and cheers, Ye teach us how to smile at Time, And set to music all the years! I thank you for set summer days, For pleasant memories lingering long, For joyful meetings, fond delays, And ties of friendship woven strong As for the last time, side by side, You tread the paths familiar grown, I reach across the severing tide, And blend my farewells with your own.

Fred: (Calling on phone) Yah, is this the abode of John Hommel, president of the Carle Place Civic Association? John: Yes it is. Who’s this? Fred: It’s Frederick Moreno, one of the authors of the Frog Horn. John: Oh, Fred! I didn’t recognize your voice. Are you okay? Fred: Yah, yah. Actually things are more than okay. I’m calling to inform you that in the first issue of the Frog Horn this September, I am going to be making a blockbuster announcement that will affect the lives of everyone in the community. Fred: I’m sorry, Fred, we must have a bad connection. Did you say something about Blockbuster opening up in our community? I thought they went out of business. Fred: No, John, I didn’t say anything about Blockbuster opening or closing. So could you open your ears and close your mouth. One second, let me adjust something. (pause) IS THIS BETTER? CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? I SAID THAT I WILL BE MAKING A MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT IN THE FROG HORN! John: I’m sorry, Fred, that is way too loud! Just tell me what the announcement is. Fred: Well. You are talking to someone who is now the award winning humorist for the Westbury Times! John: Yeah, so what’s the major news item? Fred: That’s it. I made the big time. I mean the Westbury Times is no small potatoes. We’re talking about a six figure salary, company car and unlimited expense accounts. John: Wow! They are giving you all that? Fred: No, but as I said we’re talking about it. John: Let me ask you something. Have you ever heard of Jen Calonita or Paul Mila? Fred: Did they own the old Blockbusters on Jericho Turnpike? John: Uh, no. Jen and Paul both live in Carle Place. Jen has written two series, I said series of books for young adults, Secrets of My Hollywood Life and her latest one, Belles. Paul has written four deep sea action adventures including, Dangerous Waters and his latest novel, Near Miss. He also published a book of his underwater photos plus writes a world – wide monthly newsletter called, “Sea-Gram.” Both have been guest lecturers, have had numerous book signings and are known all over the country!

Shooting the Breeze By Fred Moreno

Fred: So what does this have to do with me? John: Compared to these two residents, you are small potatoes, bud! Is my mouth closed enough for you now? Fred: Just a second, John! Are 6,400 people going to read their novels this month? And next month? And the month after that? Because together the Frog Horn and the Westbury Times have a circulation of approximately 6400 people who WILL be reading my column! And for your information I had a Frog Horn signing at our last CPCA meeting. And my articles are read in Germany. John: C’mon Fred, you know that saying, “Liar, liar, pants on fire”? At last May’s meeting you did sign two items. One was the attendance sheet and the other was the petition you initiated prohibiting kids from having lemonade stands in Carle Place. PS - your daughter lives in Germany. Fred: All I know John, is that there is no denying that today I am such a hot commodity that I already changed my email address from AOL to Hot Mail. I’m also getting vanity plates that say, “Shooting the Breeze.” John: Uh, Fred, I don’t think they could squeeze all those letters on the license plate. Fred: Uh, John, I already got special permission to have “shootin” on the front plate and “Da Breze” on the rear. You know the old saying, John: “You gotta get up a little bit earlier if you want to outfox me.” And that goes for Jen and Paul! And while I’m on a roll – or is it role? – now that I’m a celebrated author I would appreciate very much if my future articles could be placed before the Cub Scout news and not after the chiropractor’s article! (phone rings) I have to get that… (whispering to John) It’s the

SENIOR CITIZENS By John T. Heslin

Welcome back. I hope you had a great summer. Before our summer break, two of our members were honored with recognition awards for their hard work and dedication to the Senior Citizens of Carle Place. Jerry Mastroianni received the Town of North Hempstead’s Senior Citizen of the Year Award and Trudy Keegan was honored at our last meeting for the year 2013/2014. In July, a luncheon and paddleboard boat trip along the Great South Bay was enjoyed by many. A great turn out each week was realized at the sun-filled Fun Day Mondays at North Hempstead Beach Park for music, dancing, yoga, games, snacks, and enjoying each other’s company. As we start our 2014/2015 year, several trips have been planned: September 25th – Resorts Casino in Atlantic City; October 16th – Oktoberfest in Pomona, NY; November 6th – Christmas Luncheon/Show at Hunterdon Hills Playhouse, NJ; December 3rd – Intergenerational Concert at Carle Place High School; and December 4th – Christmas/Holiday Party at the Westbury Manor. Additional trips and events will be posted for 2015.

Club membership for 2014 hit 182. We are always looking for new members. Now that the summer is over, perhaps you want to make a change or join a group. Here is your chance to get together with some friends and meet new ones. Meetings are held each Tuesday at the Charles Fuschillo Park with guest speakers and refreshments. For more information on meetings, trips, or any other Senior matters, please call me at 997-7271. Along with all the good news, there is some sad news. The Carle Place Seniors lost three dedicated and longtime active members: Carol Sypien, Betty Burke, and Kitty Strauss. Our condolences are extended to their families. Stay Well!

FILLING YOU IN By CATHERINE M. FASCILLA, DDS

What Are Crowns and Why Are They Used? A crown is a tooth shaped “cap” that is cemented or bonded over a tooth completely covering the visible portion of the tooth at or above the gumline. Its purpose it to restore shape, size and function. It gives the tooth strength and improves its ap-pearance.

Crowns are placed for many reasons. They may be used to hold together parts of a cracked tooth or used over a tooth that has been severely decayed, worn or broken. They are used on teeth that have very large fillings that need to be protected from breakage or teeth that have had root canals. They are often used for cosmetic reasons for the improvement of the shape, size or shade of a tooth or several teeth. They are also placed over dental implants or to support a bridge when one or more teeth are missing.

Crowns are made of various materials. They can be made of metal including stainless steel, gold or alloys. They may be fabricated from porcelain fused to metal. or they may be entirely ceramic or resin.

There are temporary crowns and permanent crowns. Temporary crowns are made in the dental office and used as a temporary restoration until the permanent crown is constructed by the lab. They are made of acrylic, resin or stainless steel.

Stainless steel crowns are prefabricated and are also used for children whose baby teeth are severely decayed. Pediatric dentists also place stainless steel crowns to protect the teeth of children who are at a high risk of tooth decay especially when their age, behavior or medical conditions make good oral hygiene difficult.

Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) has long been the material of choice for its strength, fit and its superior esthetics when compared to all metal crowns. All ceramic crowns have been improving over the years. Because they are now as strong as a PFM crown, fit as well and are more natural looking, they are rapidly becoming the crown of choice. While dental labs are still fabricating most of the permanent crowns, the CAD/CAM system of digital impressions and milled crowns allow for fabrication in the dental office as you wait.

The summer of 2014 saw the death of Robin Williams. In addition to his zany stand-up comic routines, he played various roles on TV, in movies and on stage (Peter Pan, Popeye, Mrs. Doubtfire , Patch Adams, Mork from the Planet Ork, a Bengal Tiger in a Bagdad zoo and so on).

He was famously known for always going off script and, at rapid fire speed, creating dialogue for characters he portrayed. Despite his mastery of the ad lib, he apparently sought out and implemented an estate plan that was well thought out and which can serve as a model for all to emulate.

The specifics of his plan are reported in various publications. In essence he used several tax saving trusts to implement his plan. His life style with three marriages and complex ownership issues cried out for a plan that would preserve his wealth for his family. But the point is that all of us need to spend time on planning for our future and beyond, to make sure that our families are prop-erly provided for after we pass on.

Every good estate plan portfolio should have, at the least, a Will to make sure our worldly possessions are passed along as we wish them to be; a Durable Power of Attorney, so that if something catastrophic, but short of death, occurs we can make sure that our bills are paid, and assets taken care of; and a health care proxy, so that of we are unable to make end of life or other medical decisions, a trusted family member or friend is there to

Williams used trusts to implement his plan. Revocable trusts are frequently created to substitute for a Will. Like a Will, a revocable trust may be changed or revoked at any time until death. But unlike a Will, your trustee does not need to go to court to get prove the validity of the Trust. Thus you do not need to “probate” a trust, but you do need to “probate” a Will.

Revocable trusts are not usually used as part of a Medicaid plan, but they can be an important tool where there is no Medicaid plan in place. The same is true of a Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA).

A DPOA may have a Statutory Gifts Rider that grants extraordinary powers to your agent. Such a rider may be modified to include specific and general powers needed to create and implement a plan to save assets from being depleted. Health Care Proxy’s (HCP) allow for someone to make medical care choices when the maker of the HCP is mentally or physically incapable of doing so. It is New York State’s equivalent to a living will, which expressly directs or prohibits certain medical interventions when a patient is at life’s end. The plans you make need not be complex. They should address your own life situation. Just plan before its time to say -- NANU, NANU!

16 FROG HORN SEPT 2014

When I was a small child, before I moved to Carle Place at the age of 11 in 1953, I lived in a small apartment in Astoria. In my formative years, until about age 10, we had no television, so I watched the radio after school, listening, imagining, all my favorite shows: The Lone Ranger, Sergeant Preston of the Yukon, Ozzie and Harriet, The FBI in Peace and War, The Shadow, and the like. During the war years I played the 78 records my father had left behind when he went off to war, and sang along to "Cement Mixer Putty Putty," "Open the Door Richard," and "Puss 'n Boots" narrated by the Great Gildersleeve.

But the foremost entertainment and education I was blessed to receive came from my parents, who, with their meager income, still made sure that they enrolled me in a children's book-of-the-month club. This came, of course, with a complimentary bookshelf on which I could display each book I read until I’d read them all and filled it up.

I received a children's classic once a month which I excitedly opened and read voraciously, as it was an extension of the entertainment and the world of imagination I lived in as an only child for six years until my beloved sister was born. Up until that time I was the center of attention, the king, the son, the first-born. But those years of reading, listening, imagining, pro-vided me with a sound foundation for success in school

-- a schooling which, by my calculation, has led to a formalized education of over 26 years. Reading has enriched my life as a lifetime learner. So as we begin yet another school year, I encourage all our parents, teachers, students and families to discover, re-discover, imagine, and enjoy adventures in reading. Educational researchers have found that there is a strong correlation between reading and academic success. Good readers can understand the individual sentences and the organizational structure of a piece of writing. They can comprehend ideas, follow arguments, and detect implications. They know most of the words in the text already, but they can also determine the meaning of many of the unfamiliar words from the context. And failing this, they can use their dictionary effectively to do so. In summary, good readers can extract from the writing what is important for the particular task they are engaged in. And they can do it quickly!

Educational researchers have also found a strong correlation between reading and vocabulary knowledge. In other words, students who have a large vocabulary are usually good readers. This is not very surprising, since the best way to acquire a large vocabulary is to read extensively, and if you read extensively you are likely to be or become a good reader! So if you want your child to be successful at school, encourage him or her to read. Reading non-fiction in English is probably the most important, but English fiction and any reading in English - if done extensively - will help your child develop the reading competence that is essential for academic achievement. Better schools and better communities read. There is a book cover I saw recently which says "Never graduate." Not a bad phrase to keep in mind, for a lifetime of learning.

CP Community Update

COMMUNITY NEWS: Mineola, NY - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced the Nassau Industrial Development Agency's (IDA) approval of an economic development compact that will bring a Life Time Fitness Health Club to Garden City, creating 181 permanent jobs and 200 construction jobs at the former Fortunoff's Clearance Center property in Garden City. “This project creates a large number of new jobs for our residents and rids Garden City of this blight on the community,” said County Executive Mangano. “This announcement further highlights the success of creating new jobs and opportunities for our residents, and revitalizing vacant properties throughout Nassau County .” Life Time Fitness, a Chanhassen, Minnesota based operator of 112 fitness centers in the United States and Canada, including one in Syosset, sought IDA assistance to build a $43 million, 130,000-square-foot building on 7.68 acres and will lease at 750 Zeckendorf Boulevard in Garden City. The project will bring $18 million in total economic benefits to the County. It is expected that more than 2,000 members of the planned facility will come from outside Nassau and Suffolk Counties . “This has been a dilapidated eyesore for the area,” said Joseph Kearney, Executive Director of the Nassau IDA.
