Learning communities are developed where groups of people, linked geographically or by shared interest, collaborate and work in partnership to address their members’ learning needs. Learning communities facilitated through adult and community education are a powerful tool for social cohesion, community capacity building and social, cultural and economic development. (Department of Education, 2003, p. 12)

One day, in North Africa, there was a fourteen-year-old boy called Molish. He was just going through the process of becoming a man. In those days, you didn’t just grow up. You had to go to foreign places, and be tested on bravery, strength, wit and cunning.

For his first task Molish was left to himself in a forest to survive for three days.

Molish needed firewood, so taking up his trusty axe, he started chopping at a young birch tree. After it had fallen, he started on another. After about three more trees, he sat down for lunch. Suddenly, a tubby, white-haired dwarf trot……..

Access to Technology

1. The idea is to also have a whole range of organisations where students can access, learn to use, borrow to take home- the tools- eg MP3 players, digital cameras and video cameras.

One of our budding authors borrowed a camera to take to her son’s Athletics Carnival. The images collected will form part of a book Madelaine is creating. The book will be loaded online on to Mystory- but she will also print out as a book to have in ‘the library’ at home.

Self-directed learning has been described as "a process in which individuals take the initiative, with or without the help of others," to diagnose their learning needs, formulate learning goals, identify resources for learning, select and implement learning strategies, and evaluate learning outcomes (Knowles 1975).

4. A resource that provides all manner of personally/family relevant texts, that can be delivered with a range of media- eg

1. have the story read to you -use pdf format or personally narrated

2. Print off e-books to provide hard copy ‘relevant reading literature’ in the home- especially important in print poor environments

5. Can be linked to other community ‘oral’ story telling projects- providing a repository for those audio files as well as print versions.

1. Ideas for raising profile and encouraging more users:2. Weekly Local Newspaper article including one of the stories and a

writing/literacy titbit

3. Training Provision to a wider range of Volunteers involved through the Volunteer Network coordinated by Community College [state funded initiative]. Training to be an overview of Volunteer Literacy Tutor course as well as skills in using the technology

1. Tutors are provided with training through TAFE to focus on literacy support.
