At the service of citizens

Community service, participation and international cooperation

USC, through the University Participation and Integration Service, promoted the commitment to society, especially through programmes of community service, participation and international cooperation.

The participation in charity activities, understood as a fun-damental part of the university students’ training, implies the inter-nalisation of a set of values that stirs community conscience, social commitment and critical thinking skills towards reality while in-creasing their ability to contribute as citizens in the construction of their society and their personal growth.

The Community service, Participation and International Cooperation Department is in charge of coordinating the direct ac-tion of university community members interested in spending part of their time in voluntary service. Volunteers can collaborate on a regular basis -2 or 3 hours a week- or occasionally in the different programmes suggested by social work organisations, which cover from the hospital and healthcare field and voluntary work with mental health patients or ethnic minorities to the social support for elderly people or children.

Integration and equalityAt USC, we try to put the equal opportunities principle into

practice, encouraging the integration of people with special needs in the university activity through programmes adapted to their needs and bearing their diversity in mind. In addition, we believe that our duty is to help achieving a more just and equal society between women and men, which is the reason why we carry out various awareness-raising initiatives aimed at members of the university community and the society.

Integration of students with special needsWith the aim of guaranteeing equality among university stu-

dents, a percentage of the registration places is set aside for students with disabilities in all qualifications. Besides, several support sys-tems are also provided, from curricular adaptations and persona-lised services (personal assistants, sign language interpreters, etc.) to technical support methods (frequency-modulated equipments, Braille printers, adapted computers, etc.). USC’s web includes an accessible version for people with disabilities.

In order to carry out integration activities and normalise the situation of people with specific educational needs, USC hires personal assistants for highly-dependent students. During 2005-06 and 2006-07 academic years, a total of 12 students had a personal assistant, hired by the University Participation and Integration Ser-vice, who provided assistance with the personal care, hygiene and sign language interpreting, and helped them eating and getting in and out of bed.

Data on students with special needs

From September 2007, USC has an assistance and inte-gration protocol for students with disabilities that gathers basic intervention and communication guidelines as well as recom-mendations on educational methodologies or technical support systems according to the type of disability (visual, hearing, physical or cognitive).

At the University Residence Hall Service, rooms for people with mobility problems are available and a percen-tage of the places offered are set aside for members of the university community with disabilities (28 in each cour-se).

On the other hand, in order to guarantee equal opportunities of families with less financial resources, USC provides a free school meals scheme for students who are accommodated at the University Residence Hall Service, which, in turn, also benefits from a grant

of the Ministry of Education and Science. This scheme was created to help students with less financial resources in order to alleviate the problems derived from the incompatibility between Ministry’s grants and the University’s own accommodation bursa-ries.

«Luís Iglesias» Museumof Natural History

The “Luís Iglesias” Museum of Natural History is the most relevant historical-scientific heritage of Galicia. Botanical, zoological and geological collections and objects of historical-scientific value coming from the acquisitions made by the USC, private donations and interchanges with other institutions make a magnificent show-case of the natural world and, in particular, of Galician science.

In 2006, the activities of the Museum of Natural History be-came better known and closer to visitors due to the incorporation of the museum into the “Alive University” programme.

Alive University The objective of the Alive University programme, promoted

by the Vice-Rector of Culture, is to learn to appreciate the value of USC’s natural and historic heritage, bring it closer to society and Santiago citizens, in particular, and collaborate in the city’s cultural activity.

Up until 2007, over 10,000 people got to know the histori-cal-artistic heritage of our university thanks to this programme. In 2007, the “Natural Heritage Route” was initiated, including the visit to the Luís Iglesias Museum of Natural History and the green route along the South Campus.

The number of visitors experienced a 20% increase both in 2006 and 2007. 2007 summer campaign is worth highlighting be-cause the number of visitors increased 300% compared to the same period in the previous year due to the diversification of the servi-ces provided and the new opening hours and languages available, introducing Portuguese and Italian apart from English, which was already on offer in the previous years.

In 2007, the launching of the promotional campaign aimed at educational centres and the increase in the number of Galician-speaking visitors were worth noting.

vities in the field of teaching and research, new USC’s own master classes were established. The task carried out by these courses has a very important function in terms of USC’s international reputation.

UNESCO Master Class on Entrepreneurial Culture Inno-vation and Management (2006), whose goal is to improve educa-tional quality in the participating developing countries, as well as to expand their scientific and technology infrastructure.

“Entrepreneurial Youth” Bancaja Master Class” (2007),the first master class in Galicia with these features. Sponsored by the Bancaja Foundation, its main objective is to promote business vocation giving support to entrepreneurial initiatives, especially to those coming from women, and to the setting up of new business projects.

General Medicine Master Class (2007), sponsored by the Spanish Society of General Medicine. With this master class, it is intended to carry out undergraduate educational activities aimed at training and teaching Medicine students in values, concepts and skills in the field of primary healthcare as well as promoting educa-tional, research and training activities.

The Establishing of Rules for Devising Master Classes (2007), which will go into greater detail on the nature of USC Institutional Master Classes as special forums for thought, deba-te, study and research in all academic spheres. In addition, certain aspects such as who is in charge of the initiative development, the management’s structure and functions or the different activities to be carried out will be specified.

SportsWith the aim of encouraging sporting and healthy habits

among all university community members, USC developed several sports activities during 2006 and 2007. Keeping USC commitment to society, these activities were extended to all citizens with the aim of helping to reach a greater quality of life.

In 2007, it was specially worth noting the commitment made by the USC, together with other two Galician universities and the Directorate-General for Sports, to jointly develop activities, sports events, publications and research works in the next three years, as well as to participate in the lending of facilities. As a demonstra-tion of this agreement, whose ultimate objective is to promote the sports practice among university community members, it was spe-cially worth highlighting the support provided to the 10th Galician University Championships during March, April and May 2007, the development of a sports reality analysis project in Galicia carried out by research teams of the University of Compostela and Vigo and the organisation of the 1st Sports and Women Conference, which took place in Vigo that same year.

Dissemination of knowledgeUSC, as a source of knowledge, research and science, tried

to transfer to society all those achievements and discoveries that might have been of help to its social development. In this way, USC responds to the society’s wish of knowing the scientific activity ca-rried out by its members and understanding and appreciating its results.

The promotion of scientific activities has clear benefits not only for citizens but also for researchers and the university itself. In the first case, these activities carry a very remarkable educational value, reinforcing people’s training, helping to awake their creativi-ty and contributing to discover scientific vocations. In the case of researchers, it provides a more human relation with scientists and it favours knowledge and appreciation of their work. Lastly, scientific dissemination improves university’s public image, which becomes an indispensable element in the dissemination of knowledge as an instrument of social welfare.

«ConScience» ProgrammeThe “ConScience” scientific dissemination programme was

first developed in 2006 and organised by the Santiago de Compos-tela Consortium in collaboration with the USC. This initiative was born with the following main objectives: a) scientific dissemination left in charge of internationally renowned figures, b) to promote the image of Santiago de Compostela City as a universal centre of thought, and c) to serve as a bridge in order to strengthen the scien-tific relation between world-renowned scientific figures and the USC group of researchers.

USC, it is a forum of debate and encounter between researchers, students and society to discuss general issues related to Biology..

Science and Technology WeekUSC took active part in the development of the activities

included in the Science Week in Galicia 2006 programme. The main objective of this scientific dissemination initiative, financed by the Directorate-General for R&D&i of the Regional Department of In-novation and within the framework of the European Week of Scien-ce and of the National Scientific Week, is to get society involved in science and technology. Bringing Astronomy Down to Earth, plant biodiversity, ICT and language and workshops on neuroscience or introductory physics were some of the issues covered by the propo-sals made from the academic institution of Santiago de Compostela, in which 19 organisations took part.

In the Science Week in Galicia 2007, the participation of the “Ramón Mª Aller” Astronomy Observatory was worth noting with the organisation of conferences, open days and astronomy courses.

“A walk along Mathematics” Series of ConferencesThe goal of this Mathematics Faculty’s initiative is educatio-

nal and informative since it intends to show the historical evolution of certain mathematical concepts to the attendees, as well as the importance and beauty of classic and modern mathematical results and the basic application of some theories not only from the Mathe-matics field but also from Art, Architecture, Biology, Social Scien-ces, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Music or Chemistry, among other fields.

Gis-Day _World Day of Geographical Information SystemUSC Territorial Information System (SIT) and the Galician

Territorial Information System (SITGA) of the Regional Govern-ment of Galicia organised the latest GIS Day events, an international forum gathering over 80 countries with the aim of spreading the important role developed by the geographical information techno-logies in society. In 2007, an open day event took place allowing visitors to know in situ all the projects that were being developed.

TechBusiness Week In 2006 and 2007, the 6th and 7th TechBusiness Week took

place respectively. The main objective of this activity, which is pro-moted by the Sabiria Foundation and organised by the e-Gallaecia Forum (entity of which USC is a founding member), is the develo-pment of the information society.

ICT-SMEs LabThe main objective of this lab, born within the ICT Strategic

Plan 2003-2006 in order to correct the lack of SMEs with regard to ICT use, is to design and start up training and guidance initiatives for the human resources associated to ICT and to work in the con-tinuing training throughout their professional life through the de-velopment of specific products that facilitate the access to the latest resources and means in the ICT field. During 2006 and 2007, 27 courses on the different applications of ICTs took place. The ICT-SMEs lab has also an e-newsletter: an ICT dissemination tool aimed at SMEs in our geographical environment and at their associations.
