Peter the Penguin

by Susan Hansen

Peter is a fluffy gray penguin chick. He lives in the Antarctic with many other little Emperor penguins. After his mom laid her egg, she gave it to his dad to keep it warm. Then his mom went off to hunt for food in the ocean. Peter's dad kept the egg warm, until at last the egg cracked and out came Peter! His dad took care of him. For the next two months they spent most of their time sleeping near the other penguins. Peter's dad fed him a special food from his mouth, but he did not eat any food himself. His dad lived off his body fat during this time. Months later, a very happy day arrived. Peter's mom returned from feeding out in the ocean. She joined the hundreds of other penguins in the colony. Peter's father let out special calls to let her know where they were. Peter’s mother followed the sound of his calls and at last the family was back together again. Peter's mom began to feed her little chick with food that she had stored in her tummy. Now it was dad's turn to head out to sea to feed and get strong again. When he returned both parents cared for their little chick.

Someday Peter will be grown up, and he will have a baby chick to care for, just like his parents cared for him.

"Time for Polar Bears" Characters: Polar Bear Mom Polar Bear Cubs Setting: The Arctic Mom: Come on out of the den, Little Cubs. Time to wake up. Cubs: But Mom, it's so cold out there! We like it in here. Mom: Don't worry, Little Cubs. I'll help you out here. Cubs: Alright, Mom. But it's so white and very bright. Mom: That's because we've been in our snow den for months. Cubs: But we can barely open our eyes. Mom: You need to learn about the world. It's time to come out! Cubs: Why, Mom? We want to stay here with you. Mom: Don't worry. You are going to love it out here. Cubs: Really, Mom? What will we love? Mom: You will love playing in the snow, hunting for seals, and swimming in the sea. There is so much to learn! Cubs: Will you teach us how to do those things? Mom: Of course I will teach you. That's what moms are for. Cubs: Wow! This white stuff is soft and fluffy. We like it. Mom: You have special pads on your paws. They will help you. Cubs: Look Mom! We're spinning on the ice. This is great!

Mom: You are both quick learners! This will be fun for all of us!

“Weather Friends” Play Setting: A Quiet Hillside Characters: Wind, Snowflake, Raindrop, Sunbeam

Wind: What a perfect day! It’s so calm and quiet! Snowflake: Just a little too warm for me! Raindrop: And there are no clouds for me to hide in. Sunbeam: Relax and enjoy the weather we have right now.

Wind: It’s getting warm. I need to cool things off. Snowflake: I’d help, but I’m starting to melt. Raindrop: I could put a light mist on things if you want! Sunbeam: Please don’t. Let’s keep things as they are!

Wind: Remember last fall and those great windy days? Snowflake: How about winter? I love seeing the kids play. Raindrop: Well, I love spring and hanging out in puddles! Sunbeam: I love summer, seeing plants and animals grow.

Wind: Hey, I can push a sailboat or spin a windmill! Snowflake: I can turn a big green forest totally white! Raindrop: Drizzle or downpours… I fill ponds and streams. Sunbeam: Sounds like we all have important jobs!

Wind: I agree! Each of us has ways to be helpful. Snowflake: Throughout the seasons we each play our parts. Raindrop: Come what may, there’s weather everyday! Sunbeam: Whatever the weather, we all stick together.
