was founded to develop authentic ceiling fans true to the late nineteenth

and early twentieth-century architectural, interior and product design

movements. • Arts & Crafts, neoclassicism, Art nouveau, the Wiener

Werkstatte, Viennese secessionism, the Bauhaus along with Futurism and

French Art deco are fertile sources for retrospective ceiling fan designs. • The first electric ceiling fans (c. 1890’s), although well engineered and func-

tional, were generally ornamented in what is now called the “Victorian”

style. This style evolved from “naturalism,” in which objects were adorned

in plant and flower motifs and were highly patterned and stylized. most of

the ceiling fans on the market today are copies of, or inspired by this Victo-

rian-era style. • Period Arts looks to the great American and european

design movements of the past for inspiration in producing original interpre-

tations of what could have been. These new alternatives possess the best of

both worlds: period design and modern technology.

soon AFTer Thomas edison developed the incandescent light bulb in 1879, the “schoolhouse” glass shade was adapted as the almost universal diffuser for hanging lights. This shape of glass was found in classrooms, offices, hospitals and anywhere a diffuse electric light source was needed. • Period Arts has developed this new fan to capture some

of this nostalgia but with a thoroughly modern product. The glass on the schoolhouse Fan is fully incorporated onto the body unifying the form rather than hanging as a light kit from the bottom of a con-ventional fan. The schoolhouse Fan is simple yet traditional, perfect for your historical home.

The soPhisTiCATes oF post-WWi Paris were indulging in the élan of the roaring twenties when a major exhibition of modern design was organized to promote the latest styles in art and design. The exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs of 1925 brought together designers and artisans working in a new fashion which came to be known as “Art deco.” • This exuberant style was created in large part from the influence of the recent

discoveries in mayan art. The decorative geometries and demonstrative colors led to the moniker Zig-Zag style. home furnishings, lighting, fashion and even automotive designs were ornamented with these highly decorative but still modern forms. • The Paris ceiling fan is our interpretation, in a bronze finish with leaded glass, of a fan that might have graced the salons and bistros of 1920’s Paris.

euroPeAn design during the first decade of the twentieth century was a crucible of theory and practice, ranging from the florid beauty of the French Art nouveau to the roots of the german Bauhaus. • Belgian designer and theorist henry van de Velde called for the unification of art, the re-evaluation of the role of craftsman and designer,

the recognition that we are able “to impress beauty upon every aspect of our lives, that the artist should no longer simply paint pictures, but rather create whole rooms, or even whole dwellings, with wall-papers and furniture as well as paintings.” • The secessionist movement in Austria produced applied arts during the early years that are remarkable for

The Baltimore Basilica, the first ro-man Catholic cathedral in America, is considered by many experts to be Latrobe’s masterpiece. • The last manifestation of this American classic style was in Beaux-Arts architecture and its large public proj-ects were the familiar Lincoln memorial, the na-tional gallery of Art in Washington, d.C., and the American museum of natural history’s roosevelt memorial. • The greeks did not have ceiling fans but turn-of-the-century neoclassic and the earlier antebellum architecture should have. Around 1800, greek architecture as seen through the medium of etchings and engravings gave new impetus to neoclassicism, now called the greek revival. Although at first look this re-introduction of classic forms seems reactionary, it was really a response to the excess of rococo and should be seen as a precedent to the modern era. it was a search for the ideal of greek purity among the cacophony of nineteen-century design. • in Amer-ican architecture, neoclassicism was one expression of the American renaissance movement, ca 1880-1917. one of the pioneers of this style was Benjamin henry Latrobe, who is often noted as America’s first professional architect and the father of American

one oF The reACTions to the “natural-ism” of the Victorian era was Art nouveau. The Victorians applied the forms of nature onto the sur-face of their newly industrialized architecture and product design. The craft-oriented artisans rebelled against this industrial production by developing furniture and architecture that was unable to be mass-produced but reflected their dedication to the crafted hand-made product. • The movement used the underlying forms of the organic world. The Art

nouveau designer used the arch of the calla lily stem as the design theme for the support of a desk or book-case. henry van de Velde and Victor horta integrat-ed these sweeping forms into beautiful furniture and striking interior spaces in France and Belgium. The organic forms, as seen in the eclipse fan, were the basis of the design, not just applied to the surface. • The Art nouveau was very influential although short lived; the rebellion against the machine could not be sustained.

The Period sPAnning 1880 through the beginning of the great War represented the awakening of the age of the engineer in America. The country had been spanned by the railroad, the Brooklyn Bridge completed and skyscrapers were just around the corner. • Although contrary to the Crafts movements, the industrial Age was to have an indelible impact on the products in America. • our industry fan represents the pragmatic design

of the era: no frills of decoration, just the function expressing itself as form. • in keeping with its self-evident design, the industry fan is offered in a rough galvanized finish, a textured rust faux-finish and a carefully polished copper luster. • modern motor design, energy-saving light options and electronic controls insure that this century-old look fits your home of today.

Ordering Guidelines and Selection tipsIn addition to style and design, there are several other considerations to make when selecting a fan for your specific installation.

Ceiling Height:The more space between the blades and the ceiling, the more effectively your fan will circulate and distribute air. however, build-ing codes require that the blades of a ceiling fan be at least 7’ above the floor. generally, we recommend hanging the fan as far down from the ceiling as is visually appropriate, and maintaining the 7’ blade clearance above the floor. When dealing with higher ceilings, one third the distance to the floor is a good guideline.

Blades on some Period Arts models (Paris, Prairie, Arcadia and Library) are positioned near the top of the body. When hung with the 3” down rod (18” overall length), the blades on these models are very close to the ceiling, reducing the volume of air movement. Conse-quently, these models are best suited for ceil-ing heights that can accommodate use of the 9” down rod (24” overall length) or longer.

Blade Diameter:in nearly all cases, our 52” blade span is the most appropriate selection. The 42” blade span should be reserved for smaller rooms or narrow spaces (10’ x 10’ and smaller), or when airflow to the area above the blades is blocked or restricted by architectural elements (beams, walls, cabinetry, etc.). occasionally two 42” fans may be a desirable alternative to one 52” fan.

Lighting:All Period Arts fans are available with standard incandescent lamping or with energy-saving compact fluorescent lamping. our CFLs provide 75% energy savings and lamp life 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. While they emit a well balanced, warm light quality, keep in mind that our CFLs are not dimmable.

Period Art’s opal glass lights generally func-tion well as a primary light source for a space, but should not be depended on to be the only light source in a room. our mica and stained glass shades are intended to function as decorative accent lights and must be supplemented with additional light sources for a room to be properly lit.

Controls:Period Arts fans do not use pull chains (except for the industry model). Therefore, in order to operate your fan at different speeds and switch your light independently of your fan, you need to select the appropriate control. Please refer to our controls section (at left) for more information. Any control ordered with a fan that has been configured with an energy-saving CFL will be supplied in a non-dimming version.

Period Arts Fan Company customer service is available to assist you with any additional questions you may have regarding selection of your ceiling fan.
