This month it is “parts is parts” month, yeah right!!! IN MY OPINION, Back in the day, oil was single viscosity ie: 30W and other than the gasoline companies that were compelled to sell their brands at their gas stations ( remember Havoline Oil, it was Texaco brand oil originally ), there were only a few oils that had some R & D behind them. One was Valvoline, another was Pennzoil, and finally came Castrol. Prior to that, STP was the major viscosity increasing agent. If you never saw or used STP it was the consistency of honey and helped keep some viscosity at high racing temperatures. Now look at the progress in multi-viscosity and synthetic oils everywhere – that is progress. You should use an oil additive if you run a flat tappet cam with today’s oil. This will add back in the zinc and phosphorus that is missing from today’s re-engineered oils for modern engines. Auto parts were also usually very good American made or OEM manufacture and you knew the quality – not now. There are so many knock offs you have to be careful of the breakage of some parts that can cost you dearly. There are still some AC-Delco parts available for you Camaro ie: ball joints, clutch forks, etc. if possible use these for reliability. If I cannot get AC-Delco I try for hard parts from O'Reilly’s for U joints, tie rod ends, etc. If it says made in China, I back off. I guess some are good but the knock off can happen in 5 days according to 60 Minutes report where high end tennis shoes and golf clubs had mock ups in 5 days and production in 7 days of their pieces. All this without any engineering or safety concerns, just counterfitting for the $. Back in the day there were only a few cam companies. If you ran Olds you got Engle cams if you had any fuel hemi you had Isky cams. Not much variety or availability. Later Sig Erson left Isky and started his own cam company (remember how Super Shops had Erson parts ), Clay Smith ( woodpecker ) cams came along. Then all the match race and AF/X cars were using Crane cams and Crower cams. Now Comp cams has the greatest R&D in the industry, they offer cams for all push rod and overhead cam engines. If you want a specially ground cam, they can do it. Do you remember what they called a rev kit for early roller cams? It was a set of springs that pushed down on the lifters in the lifter gallery from under the head – this was before todays good spring material and triple spring applications, cams and components have come a long way. I had looked for a SS hood for my ‘68 for a year in 1991. All the junk yard stuff was gone and the swap meet stuff was junk. But as it happens when the demand is high and the prices get high too, there will be some knock off made. I finally got a knock off and the body guy told me it would cost as much in labor to fit and finish the hood as I had paid for it. But as time passes the quality either comes up or no one buys the part anymore. I have heard some good reports on the AMD body panels as being as close to GM original stuff as any out there right now. I have bought parts from Classic Industries in California, Year One in Georgia ( ask Keith Dorsa about their great customer support ), and Firewheel Classics in Wylie, Tx ( owned by NTC member Patti Stinson ). All provide first gen parts, so shop around to see just what they have for you. My first hop up item was two 2 barrel Stromberg carbs on a flathead, later moved up to single 4 barrel on the flat head ( great upgrade ), then I moved up to 2 Carter AFBs ( aluminum four barrel ) on my 64 GTO. Back then the combined CFM was maybe 750 for the total of both 4 barrel carbs. Back then the combined CFM was maybe 750 for the total of both 4 barrel carbs. Then came the Holleys, you could get 50% more CFM flow from one of their high performance carbs as any AFB out there. Do you remember the Holley 3 barrel ( trap door ) carb? Yes they did make one with a single rectangular rear barrel, did not last long. Edlebrock later got the rights to build off the original prints for the AFBs and that is the Edlebrock four barrel carbs of today but with much greater air flow. Finally I have moved to Demon carbs for street use, much better street manners and only give up a small bit of HP from the Holley models. I have seen the future ( at SEMA several years ago ), it is FAST electronic fuel injection systems.

They work, they are clean with mixtures constantly monitored and adjusted with O2 readings. I asked the rep all the questions I could come up with and they had good logic behind each answer. Anyway, now is the future, there has never been a better time to have a hot rod with good HP, emissions, and mileage all in one product. Go for it!! Cars & Coffee and Sublett Rd. cruises had some good participation of NTC folks. Great turn out for C & C, saw lots of folks and some new NTC members. Thanks Gene Brennan for the spots you saved for the NTC crew. Gene was right about getting there early, they closed the drive in gates at 7:15 this month. Either get there early or be disappointed. Christian Classic Cruisers had some good NTC turn out: Bill Hooks, Bill Roy, Russell Himes, George Johnson, Bob Snegon, Michael Holmans, Mad Dog Dodson, Dane Young, and Don Bomer for a few. October 19 will be Toys for Tots show at CCC. The planning portion of the Mena, Arkansas trip 10/26 by Brad Howell and Frank Manzare is done. My money is on Brad to get every first gen Camaro in Texas to drive to Arkansas!! (see page 5)

Huff is coordinating the State Fair show 10/19. He has the corral for 30 cars and has nearly filled it up. Here are the ones that signed up to go: Huff, Jacobs, O’keefe, Young, Tripp, Brennan, LaRue, Caver Jr., Sampson, Eiland, Swaggerty, Gant, Hendrickson, Caver Sr.,Parker, Cline, Taylor, Ratliff, Kerbel, Jackson, Hemphill, Goslin, Scarbrough, should be a great time for cars and corny dogs.

I heard that Brenda Howard and Lynn and Keith Dorsa made Vernon’s Hotter than Hell show.

Firewheel Classics Customer Appreciation day is 10/19 at the Wylie, Tx. Facility. T-shirt order has arrived, I will have the shirts with me at shows where you see me (Cruise for the Cure, etc). For those going to Emory, let me know and I will arrange to get your shirts to Ken or Fred that are headed to Emory show. If you want to arrange to pick yours up, let me know. I have mailed all those that paid for mailing on 8/29.

The Emory Around the Square show sponsored in part by A & R Collision ( Alan Pound and Ronnie Mc Entuff - long time NTC members ) had some great cars and lots of participation. It started with the popular Friday night bash and the show got under way Saturday. Several NTC members made the trip to Emory. A special feature of the show was the area for "the real deal Z-28" with Ken Jacobs bringing his '67 and Fred Beagles bringing his '69 to the party. Thanks Alan and Ronnie for the great Rains County hospitality.

Check the events tab on the NTC web site for updates of 2013 club events.

Mena Road Trip Update Well, we’re one more month closer to our road trip to Mena. I’m nearly ready and I hope you are too. There is no

limit to the number of members that can drive this route with us. However, there is a limit to the number of rooms still out

there. I was informed by Brad Bulkley when he signed up the he got the last room at Sun Country. Last I heard Limetree

still had a few left, but that info is more than two weeks old.

At many of our functions we’ve some members that just come out to see us off or maybe make part of the event

with the group. All not already signed up are very welcome to do just that. If I know you want to meet us at some point

along the way, then I will give you a copy of the itinerary and you can join us at any point.

I’ve never seen this many first gen Camaros in one place before and I was there and saw many of these new on the

lot and can’t remember ever seeing this many on any of them. This will certainly be a spectacle and car-fun at it’s zenith.

$Bill said, “My money is on Brad to get every first gen Camaro in Texas to drive to Arkansas!!” and HE’S RIGHT!

I want everyone in the club to enjoy this event as much as I’m going to. We’re fix’n to make some mighty powerful

memories together and you don’t want to miss this one. The date is set, the adventure defined and shirts on the print, all that

is left is getting yours rides ready. Don’t forget to give them a good look over, we want all driving back and not on one of

the two safety trailers we’re bringing along.

Featured Car Questionnaire Harry Jenkins ‘68 Z/28 RS Coupe

How did you acquire the car?

Friend approached me letting me know where it was and that the owner was having to sell it to pay medical bills due to wife’s complications from pregnancy.

How long have you owned the car?

    38 years

Anything interesting happen during your acquisition or ownership of the car? I couldn’t believe that this car was going to be sold. Better yet here I am in front of the owner of the car with cash in my pocket. It took all the cash I had ($1500.00). During the test drive I couldn’t believe how the car handled. The power and speed was remarkable for a factory stock car.

What would you do differently with the car? I can’t think of a single thing that I would do different to the car. It’s just the way that I like it. I have always pampered it and I have only driven it 1145 miles since purchase resulting in an odometer reading of 89,650.7. The car is in remarkably good condition and I hope to drive and enjoy it. I will pass this car down to my son with hopes that his son will take an interest in it one day. This is contingent on my keeping possession until I tire of it (Death!!!!).

Any company or service that deserves high praise for helping with your car? Bob Tilford’s Speed Shop Todd McGuire Mechanic – Friend
