ANNUAL REPORT 2010-2011

In the story, The Lion
and the Three Bulls,
written by Greek fable
writer Aesop, there are
helpful insights about
the importance of effec-
tive communication
with team members. In essence, due to the
lack of communication between three bulls
who grazed together, their enemy, a lion,
slowly but surely devoured each one. The
lesson Aesop points out is that “union is
strength,” and union is developed over time
with effective communication. I am also re-
minded of this lesson from Proverbs 18:1-
2, “A man who isolates himself seeks his
own desire;…a fool has no delight in un-
derstanding, but in expressing his own
heart.” This school year has been one of
communicating with the Northside school
family to strengthen a foundation of trust as
we move forward in seeing the Lord work
to accomplish the school’s mission.
With intentional plans to be thoroughly
saturated in school life through a host of
gatherings and activities with board mem-
bers, faculty, staff, students, and parents, I
desire to be available. My prayer is that as
we listen to different ideas, praises, and
concerns that we will process these things
using wisdom and discernment in learning
and making wise decisions for the sake of
the school program and our children.
God has been good to NCS this school
year as we have applied the theme, Make
Today Count. In the following pages, you
will read about how the NCS team has led
the way in doing just this. The following brief
summary speaks to His goodness, but it
also supports the goals stated in our Vision
Statement and reinforces the eight strategic
goals established and that I alluded to in
last year’s Annual Report. Rejoice with us
as we share these good things with you.
Our school family can be very proud of
several highlights beginning with this year’s
2011 graduating class that received over
4.7 million dollars in scholarship offers. We
were pleased with 100% of them having
plans to attend college. Ten of these stu-
dents received athletic scholarships. Earlier
in November, after four grueling months of
practice and one competition after another,
our HS Marching Band and Color Guard
earned a well deserved Florida 1A State
Championship – the second under Fine
Arts Director, Nathan Farrell’s tenure. An-
other bright spot you will read about is the
accomplishments of our Athletic Depart-
ment under the leadership of A.D. Raul
Hernandez. Collectively, the coaches and
athletes were recognized as having the best
athletic program in all of Pinellas County
and second among all 2A Florida schools.
More so, for the first time in the school’s
history, the coaches and athletes were rec-
ognized among all 2A schools by the
Florida High School Athletic Association
with the coveted Fred E. Rozelle Sports-
manship Award. On the academic front,
NCS leads the way with a quality Christ-
centered academic program. Recent na-
tional standardized test scores (grades 1-9)
indicated that NCS is among the top one-
fourth of all schools in over-all academic
performance of basic subjects: math, read-
ing, and language. The school’s average
ACT score for the graduating class of 2011
exceeded the state average by more than 2
points, and the percentage of students
passing exams for Advance Placement
courses taught more than one year ex-
ceeded 64%. Although these accomplish-
ments are of the utmost importance as we
strive for a well-balanced student, we are
most pleased with the many spiritual deci-
sions made by boys and girls throughout
the school year. It is these momentous de-
cisions that open the way for each child to
reach their potential in Christ as they seek
to fulfill His plan for their lives.
Efforts are on-going to improve in all
areas by placing the best personnel in the
proper positions to move our students for-
ward in excelling to their potential. I am
pleased with the addition of Mrs. Katherine
Rotunno who has accepted the position of
elementary principal. She is committed to
helping raise the standard of our elemen-
tary program – in both academics and
character building awareness. We are also
committed to improving the quality of pro-
gram in the high school grades as inten-
tional efforts have been made to increase
the spiritual awareness and leadership of
our students, strengthen the Praxis
program, and increase performance and
test scores.
The freshmen class led the way with 21
newly enrolled students as enrollment grew
during the school year to even out at 614
students. We anticipate another strong en-
rollment for the new year. A quality product
produces satisfied parents which translates
into parents being the school’s number one
promoter.
With the Bobby Bowden dinner, we
launched the school’s first significant capi-
tal campaign in several years to raise funds
to improve the Athletic Complex. This is a
worthwhile effort that will benefit every NCS
student. Phase I is to construct a new
eight-lane, 400 meter synthetic poly -
urethane track. Closing in on having one-
half of these funds committed, we are
asking the Lord to provide the remaining
funds to move forward with this project.
The successful completion of this project
opens the doors for the next capital project
– which will focus on enhancing our school
entrance and parking areas.
Thank you for trusting us with your chil-
dren. On behalf of nearly 90 school em-
ployees, we are grateful for your prayers
and support to help NCS be all it can be.

Northside Christian School is a ministry of Northside Baptist Church. This past schoolyear, the Administration setup an office for the pastors of Northside Baptist Church tohave a regular presence on campus.
OOuurr GGooaall:: The Northside pastors are not on campus to make decisions for theadministration. We are not on campus to convince everyone to come to NorthsideBaptist Church. If you already go to a good church, then continue to go to it. If you arenot already a part of a good church, then we would love for you to join us! The goal ofthe Northside pastors being regularly on campus is to help enhance and encouragethose in our school ministry – students, parents, faculty, staff and administration.
OOuurr MMiinniissttrryy:: The pastors are on campus to be able to help the school family whenthey struggle or have questions or need prayer or just want someone to celebrate withthem when things are great.
OOuurr PPaasstt:: We recognize that not all pastors in NBC’s past were interested in ourschool and that some might have been more interested in administrativeresponsibilities rather than pastoral responsibilities at the school. We also recognizethat not all administrators in NCS’s past were as willing or wanting to have the pastorson campus.
OOuurr PPrreesseenntt:: We celebrate that we have an administration (started with Mary Brandesand continued with Don James) that wants a good relationship with NBC and that wehave pastors who want a good relationship with NCS.
OOuurr FFuuttuurree:: The Northside pastors are looking to continue to keep the office oncampus, being available for all those of our school family, but we are also looking toincrease our pastoral ministry on campus. We are looking to see how we can moreregularly know and be in prayer for specific needs, answer questions (think Biblehomework or projects), know and provide care for our school family, and start a Biblestudy for parents and/or families on campus.

Philippians 1:6 says, “Being confident of this very thing, that he which
hath begun a good work in you, will perform it to the day of Jesus Christ.”
As a 16 year old, I accepted Christ, and that became my favorite verse al-
most immediately. I am confident that Christ continues to work in my own
life just as I am absolutely certain that the good work begun at Northside
Christian 40 years ago continues to be blessed because of the faithful God
that we have committed ourselves to.
As the Elementary School Principal, I am looking forward to partnering
with teachers, parents, volunteers, and our amazing students to pursue ex-
cellence. It is honoring to God to seek to do our very best academically. I will be working with our dedi-
cated teachers to create a learning atmosphere that is caring and safe, yet which challenges our students
in all of the core subjects. I am enthusiastic about strengthening our Reading and Writing programs all the
way from our precious Preschoolers up to our 6th graders who are preparing for Middle School. Our stu-
dents must be inspired to not settle for what is easy or comfortable, but to push themselves to achieve their
own personal best.
I also believe that God would have us pursue excellence in our daily walk as Christians. Our faculty has
the passion for helping children develop the character of Christ. I am proud to work alongside teachers who
each have their own personal relationship with Jesus. This allows Biblical Integration to take place natu-
rally, because the love and knowledge of Jesus will flow through everything our teachers do. I am particu-
larly excited about developing a “Servant Leadership” program that will provide opportunities for our older
elementary students to serve our school and their younger schoolmates.
Excellence in academics and in the spiritual lives of our students can best be achieved when there is
unity and cohesiveness among the adults who influence their daily lives. Know that I will strive to always
make myself available to meet with parents. I want to embrace a “family atmosphere” that will help us to
lay the foundation that will affect future accomplishments. As parents, teachers, and administration work
together –all with the Lord’s leading- students will know they have the support to become all God wants
them to be.
As I look back at my 32 years as a Christian, I have always found the Lord to be faithful. He is where I
choose to lay my confidence. I believe whole heartedly that many good works will begin this school year on
our Elementary campus. I would be honored to have your prayers as I set forth a vision of excellence be-
ginning on day one – knowing confidently that God will be faithful to help us each step of the way.
