What’s Your Manner of Life?

Dear People of God,

Then Absalom commanded his servants, “Mark when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Do not fear; have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.” (2 Sam.13:28, ESV)

Absalom’s encouragement to his servants to be “courageous and valiant” are chillingly ironic since these appalling instructions to commit murder represent neither courage nor valor. It is so easy for us to blind ourselves to the destructive nature of violence when we believe we’re pursuing a noble or worthy cause. The shining allure of what we’ve decided are key goals in life too often have the effect of causing us to ignore the consequences of selfish or even violent behavior, to which we can so easily succumb when we become obsessed with achieving a particular outcome.

In recent days here in our own beloved country, we have seen grievous injury and even death result from people deciding that their cause was important enough to justify any actions in order to obtain their goals. It is the old and tragically deceptive belief that a noble enough end can justify any means. This is surely one of the most destructive beliefs any human being can hold.

Jesus tells us very clearly that a bad tree simply cannot produce good fruit. (See Matthew 7:16) As Christians, it is so important for us to present a testimony clearly professes our faith in the Only Son of God. We must also live our lives in such a way that no one can be left in any doubt as to how we plan on getting to His Kingdom. So, where we are headed is in no way any more important than how we get there!

From time to time, it’s essential to stop and examine the methods we employ in this life to accomplish our ends. If we find that the manner in which we are living is in some way harmful or destructive either to ourselves or to others, then a change in our planned destination might just be in order! Fr. Are you a Citizen of Narnia? I certainly am! For over seventy years now, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe have been whisking children from ages 6 to 96 through the wardrobe into the magical kingdom of the Great Lion, Aslan. In his attempt to render the Christian faith in a version which children could understand, C. S. Lewis actually created a beautiful icon of expression that has brought an understanding of Christianity to millions upon millions of readers with a whimsy and grace few theologians have matched.

Ah, but how exactly was Narnia created? And where did the White Witch come from? And how ever did such a marvelous wonder as a magical wardrobe come to be? Well, in fact, Lewis actually wrote a kind of prequel to the other books in The Chronicles of Narnia which is far less known. The Magician’s Nephew is the author’s explanation of the Creation Account, the Fall of Man, and the existence of Evil. Of all the chronicles in the Narnia series, it is, The Magician’s Nephew which draws the most parallels with the Bible. We will explore this wonderful view of Christianity during the usual Wednesday Bible Study time, starting October 18 thru November 15 in a four-part series entitled, “Before the Wardrobe.”

“Before the Wardrobe” By The Rev. James W. Barnhill, Priest in Charge

We will focus on this timeless explanation of God’s creative wonder that has inspired so many.

Until then, onward and upward toward Narnia!

People sometimes comment that I have a lot of energy. The truth is at the end of the day I collapse, but what keeps me going are the prayers of my friends and the prayers I lift to God.

In 2012, I first came to Ugandan Christian University for Vacation Bible School Training. I was seeking the Lord’s will for my missions. As I walked home one day, I met a woman who asked me what I was doing on the campus. We stopped and talked. I was feeling so alone that day, despite all the help I was receiving. She asked me when VBS would begin and promised to keep me and the program in prayer.

Susan Olwa was my first Ugandan prayer warrior, and while I now have many who pray with me and for me, she continues to encourage me and I her, as we minister before the Lord. She and her husband, Alfred, have been called to their home in the Diocese of Lango. He serves the Lord as Bishop and she to walk the paths God has for her.

On Thursday, July 27, I accompanied them as they went to the Diocese, entering it by crossing the lake which is the southern boundary of the Diocese of Lango.

Please pray that God will guide their footsteps.

On Sunday, August 13, I went to the Consecration. It was a glorious celebration which also included an altar call. All the glory belongs to Jesus!

Kurt has the people of Peje temporarily hooked up to the water. He uncapped it; purchased an electric submersible pump (which was not part of the budget), and hooked it up. The pump will be on a timer because the power would be too expensive for them until Kurt and I are able to finish the tower with the solar panels and pump by this year’s end. We pray for provision as we still need $3000 to complete this project when we return to Guatemala in November.

The electric company had not hooked up power, and Kurt didn't want to leave the country without knowing that when the electric company came to hook up the electricity, that the pump would even work at all. Thursday, August 10, Kurt borrowed a 220-volt generator and took it out there. In 1-1/2 hours, he had the tubes primed to the houses. He was happy, but also sad that he was leaving them without water then. Fifteen minutes after he did the test, the electric company came and hooked it up! We are grateful to the Mayor of the closest "city" that God gave us favor with. The Peje residents now have water for at least two hours a day!!! We provided one hard worker with tubing to go to his house, and for the first time ever, he will have water! That’s the GREAT news - and I know that’s a lot of exclamation points, but I can’t tell the story of God's greatness and protection and provision without them!!

Now, for not so great news, except that God is merciful: When Kurt returned home about 7:30 that night, after driving in the dark and rain feeling light-headed and very fuzzy, he asked me to call the doctor. When Kurt asks that, you know he's not feeling good. As soon as the Doctor arrived, he noticed how pale Kurt

Exciting News from Guatemala! By Sally Jackson, Missionary to Guatemala First Steps Outreach Ministries

looked, and weak he was. He said it was sun and heat stroke. I gave him lots of suero (Pedialyte) and water. He was a little better the next day. Saturday, I worked with Kids Club and he called me afterward to say his blood pressure was low. I went home and checked his pressure, and sure enough, it was low. I called the doctor again who came and told Kurt to drink more water, lots more water. On August 15, as I was writing this update, he was doing much better. God is so GREAT! He is our Refuge, Deliverer and Strength.

We will leave Guatemala on September 3 for Florida, and we are looking forward to seeing each of you and hope to visit with you, meet for coffee or a get together. We have lots of neat things to share with you, and we miss you! Thank you for your prayers and support.
