HERB PILHOFER· Herb Pilhofer's experience as a composer,

performer, arranger and producer, com-bined with an intimate understanding ofthe '80s computer technology, is leadingthe way toward a revolutionary union ofsight and sound.

Among Pilhofer's recent accomplish-ments are musical scores for nationallyadvertised television clients, as well as themotion picture industry. He has com-posed pieces for the film Sometimes I Won-

. der, starring Colleen Dewhurs; On TheEdge, starring Bruce Dern and directed byRob Nilsson; and collaborated with DougTrumbull of Close Encounters fame on hislatest effort, New Magic.

Born in Germany, Pilhofer's education'began at the Nuremberg Music Conserva-tory. His style and talent as a self-taughtjazz musician soon earned him a place onthe European Armed Forces Radio Net-work. In the late '50s, he studied andtaught at the University of Minnesota andwrote the first jazz compositions everperformed by the Minneapolis SymphonyOrchestra. When the Guthrie Theater ofMinneapolis decided to hire their firstmusical director in the' 60s, they looked toPilhofer. His unusual compositions even-tually drew requests from the DenverCenter Theater Company and the Reper-tory Theater of Lincoln Center in NewYork.

Herb Pilhofer's first company won aGrammy Award and two nominations for

the recording of Copland's" AppalachianSpring." His album Spaces, a specialcommission of the 3M Company, was thefirst digital 32 track recording. His "Nightof The Dreams" recording, an architec-tural experiment in sound, was backed byParamount Studios.

The music presented in this programwith The Dale Warland Singers was pro-duced and recorded by Pilhofer', a state ofthe art, computer based sound studio and

..a collaboration with his son Eric, an ac-complished recording engineer and sounddesigner.

•American Transcendentalist writers of the19th century: Emerson and Thoreau andWhitman. Holm grew up to become eve-rything that was most improbable for astrapping farm boy: fine tenor, skilledclassical pianist, accomplished bridgeplayer, poet, essayist, teacher, wandererof the world." - St. Paul Pioneer Press
