Dear Member,

This month, as the city marks the 149th anniversary of the Great Fire of 1871, WTTW will bring you the dramatic story of this defining and prescient moment in Chicago history when Chicagoans faced destruction, rebuilt, and prepared the city

for a thriving future. THE GREAT CHICAGO FIRE, a new Chicago Stories special, premieres on Friday, October 9 at 8:00 pm on all WTTW platforms. Explore the companion website (wttw.com/chicagofire) and on page 4, meet the film’s writer-producer and executive producer.

WTTW celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with new programming including POV’s The Infiltrators, following a group of radical Dreamers who are on a mission to stop deportations; Latino Vote: Dispatches from the Battleground, an inside look at the high-stakes effort to get out the Latino vote in this year’s election; and the 2020 Hispanic Heritage Awards, a prestigious honor bestowed

on Latinos by Latinos. On wttw.com, we’ll profile Rudy Lozano, a Little Village labor activist and community activist who championed Black-Latino unity in the election of Harold Washington, Chicago’s first African American mayor.

WFMT will honor Hispanic Heritage Month with music written and performed by musicians from Spain and Latin America including an Hispanic-themed program from the Milwaukee Symphony. On wfmt.com, discover the unique Spanish art form of zarzuela and meet some lesser-known Latin American composers we think you will love. 4 OCTOBER 2020

For many Chicagoans, the story of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 is a familiar one: a devastating inferno that destroyed the city, and its resurrection from the ashes. This episode of Chicago Stories that revisits the fire reveals new details with recreations and animations that bring this long-ago event to vivid life. The program recalls the

blaze from the point of view of three survivors: Irish immigrant Catherine O’Leary, who was wrongly accused of starting the fire; Chicago Tribune publisher William Bross; and head custodian of the Board of Trade, Joseph Hudlin, a former slave who became a hero. Executive producer Dan Protess and producer and writer Peter Marks talked about their approach to telling this old story in a new way.

Revisiting theGreat Chicago Fire 149 Years Later by MEREDITH FRANCIS

Page 4: A CHICAGO STORIES Special · Chicago, then as now, was a city that was really divided by race, ethnicity, and class. People across the socioeconomic spectrum did not experience the

The story of the Great Chicago Fire is 149 years old. What are some of the challenges in telling a story that happened so long ago?

PETER MARKS: It is the seminal event in Chicago history. The challenges are, how do you tell a story that has no pictures? There are no pictures that exist from during the fire itself. Nobody’s ever found any of those. You have mostly illustrations, mostly black and white, some that were later colorized. The other challenge is that the story has been done. So how do you tell the story with a fresh angle?

DAN PROTESS: That was one way in which Peter rose to the occasion. Especially in editing in places where I would have been perfectly happy just seeing a painting of the fire, Peter kept insisting, “No, I want to feel the fire.” And I think that’s important, because we have a tendency when we think of these historical events to have a waxy nostalgia about them, and almost see them in our memories as black-and-white events. But we forget that for the people living through the fire, this was awful.

The show explores the fire through the lens of three individuals: Catherine O’Leary, Joseph Hudlin, and William Bross. Why did you choose these three people?

MARKS: We wanted to have somebody who left behind a record of what happened so we could have a first-person perspective through their words and hear what they had to say. We wanted to get a cross-section of society and different social rungs.

PROTESS: I always try to tell any story from a human perspective. We’re humans as producers. Our viewers are humans. We’re all more likely to find an interest in a story when we see historical events through the eyes of humans like us.

The show examines certain myths and local legends. The most pervasive myth was that Catherine O’Leary’s cow kicked over a lantern and started the fire. Why was it important to dispel that?

MARKS: It is the greatest myth about the fire. If you talk about the Great Chicago Fire, everyone thinks that it was Mrs. O’Leary, the cow, and the lantern. There’s an interviewee who says that these myths are like seeds, and they start to grow and it’s impossible to stop them. It was really wonderful to have Mrs. O’Leary’s descendant, Nancy Connelly, on the program. She provided a wonderful perspective and an emotional core about the suffering of her relative, and provided some humanity to the fire and what happened afterwards.

PROTESS: Blaming the Chicago Fire on Catherine O’Leary was heaping a tragedy upon a tragedy. Not only did we lose our city, but we continued to perpetuate the lie for more than a century that this woman was responsible. And it’s a story that we all grew up with, especially those of us who grew up in Chicago. So it’s not dispelling some obscure myth. It’s dispelling a myth that we all grew up with.

In researching or doing interviews, did you personally learn anything new or discover any details that surprised you?

MARKS: One thing I didn’t realize was that immediately after the fire, the city was rebuilt exactly like it looked before. In those three years after the fire, you wouldn’t have known it was a different city. There was another fire in 1874, and luckily the whole city didn’t burn down, but it’s after that when the city starts to transform and change, so that a decade later you get people like Louis Sullivan and other architects coming to Chicago who transform the face of the city.

PROTESS: Working on this definitely clarified some of the chronology for me. I would think that a lot of people in our audience probably assume that this was an event that unfolded over a few hours, but it actually happened over the course of three days. What if you were a North Sider, and there’s a fire all the way on the Southwest Side of the city? There’s no television news or internet to tell you what’s happening, but maybe you see some distant smoke. It is so far away from you at that point that the idea that this fire would reach your home on the North Side had to be unbelievable.

What do you hope people will take away from the show?

MARKS: I hope it provides some type of hope during this time of crisis in the world, that we do look back and history provides a lesson that people find a way. Chicagoans have found a way to flex their muscles and pick themselves up and carry on.

PROTESS: I hope the recreations and the animations make people feel the fire and give them a sense of what it must have been like to live through it. But more than anything else, I hope they see the many ways in which this story resonates with the present. Chicago, then as now, was a city that was really divided by race, ethnicity, and class. People across the socioeconomic spectrum did not experience the fire equally, in the same way that we’re not experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic equally.

It reveals the anti-immigrant bigotry of the time, how these forces led the media to wrongfully accuse O’Leary of starting the fire, and how the people of Chicago rallied to rebuild the city better than before.

Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin

Host Bill McGlaughlin begins the month with a tribute to the late pianist Leon Fleisher (1928-

2020). He then devotes a week to one of the most fundamental and mysterious qualities that music

has: its ability to convey emotion.Weeknights, October 5-16, 7:00 pm

Welz Kauffman: 20 Summers at RaviniaWelz Kauffman’s 20-year tenure heading the Ravinia Festival has been filled with triumphs and innovations. Although his final season of 2020 played out differently than anyone had anticipated, his influence over the outdoor festival in Highland Park will remain after his departure. Welz appears on the air twice this month: on October 1 in a recently recorded recital by soprano Michelle Areyzaga with him as collaborative pianist; and on October 5 in an extended conversation with WFMT general manager George Preston in which he recalls his most memorable festival highlights. We’ll enhance the special with music that corresponds with many of Kauffman’s memories.

In the Spotlight

From the Royal Opera House Covent GardenLast fall’s new Covent Garden production of Benjamin Britten’s opera Death in Venice garnered rapturous praise for its star, tenor Mark Padmore. He played Gustav von Aschenbach, a burned-out German writer who travels to Venice in search of peace and quiet, but his sojourn - during a cholera outbreak - will bring him anything but. This is Britten’s rendering of the Thomas Mann novella by a single singer, in this case baritone Sir Gerald Finley, who came in for his share of acclaim. Britten’s last opera is filled with layers of meaning expressed through music sometimes lyrical and sometimes dissonant. Sir Antonio Pappano conducts.

From the Royal Opera House Covent GardenA frequent situation in operatic comedies is that of an old man wanting to court a young woman, either for her money or because he wants to be young again, or both. The result is inevitably a triumph for the young woman and her age-appropriate suitor. Donizetti’s Don Pasquale is based on this idea, with the soprano and tenor in this case being helped out by the wily Dr. Malatesta. Sir Bryn Terfel portrayed Don Pasquale to critical acclaim last fall in this new production at the Royal Opera House; Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko also stars. Listen for a rare bass-and-baritone duet between Pasquale and the doctor.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio BroadcastsThe CSO’s first conductor, Theodore Thomas (1835-1905), came to America from Germany with his family as a youth, later touring the Eastern United States as a freelance concert violinist. After gaining some orchestral experience, Thomas led the first concert of what was then the Chicago Orchestra at the Auditorium Theater on October 16, 1891. During his tenure as conductor, he introduced American audiences to European composers that were new to them – notably, his friend Richard Strauss. Thomas also oversaw the building of the Daniel Burnham-designed Orchestra Hall, and led its dedicatory concert just a few weeks before his death. To mark Thomas’s 185th birthday, the CSO presents this tribute concert of works by Brahms, Wagner, Elgar, and Strauss under the batons of Artur Rodzinski, Fritz Reiner, Sir Georg Solti, and Daniel Barenboim.

Music of the BaroqueAs its late-summer series concludes, Music of the Baroque returns to the grand finale of its 2016-17 season, a performance of Georg Philipp Telemann’s oratorio The Day of Judgment. Jane Glover conducts soloists, chorus, and orchestra in this work that the ensemble introduced to Chicago audiences earlier in its history. Telemann’s work is divided into four “Contemplations.” In part one, believers and non-believers are both heard from; in part 2, storms, earthquakes, and other calamities are vividly depicted, recalling some Biblical accounts of events that will precede the end. Part 3 shows the arrival of Jesus, and in part 4, choruses of praise herald The Ascension to Heaven.

Wednesday, October 14 8:00 pm

From the Royal Opera House Covent GardenThe origin of the 1892 opera is a tale by the young Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a superbly Romantic, pathos-filled novel called The Sorrows of Young Werther. He is a poet in love with a woman pledged in marriage to another man. She returns his affection but sticks to her vows and her duty, driving her would-be lover to despair. Among the highlights of Massenet’s score are Werther’s aria “Pourquoi me reveiller,” and the Letter Scene in which his beloved, Charlotte, reproaches herself for being unable to destroy the letters he has written her. In this Royal Opera House Covent Garden performance from fall of 2019, tenor Juan Diego Florez and mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard sing the principal roles.

From the Royal Opera House Covent GardenThe London critics could not say enough words of praise for mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as she performed the title role of Handel’s opera Agrippina at Covent Garden last year. This opera, which premiered in Venice in 1709, is one of Handel’s youthful triumphs. Agrippina is the wife of the Roman emperor Claudius; her thirst for power leads her to deceptions and conspiracies to guarantee that her son, Nero, will succeed to the imperial throne. DiDonato was acclaimed for both her singing and her acting talents, as was soprano Lucy Crowe, who portrays the equally ambitious and scheming Poppea. The singers are joined for this performance by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio BroadcastsHindemith’s symphony titled Mathis der Maler (Matthias the Painter) was premiered in 1934 by Wilhelm Furtwaengler and the Berlin Philharmonic; much of its music was re-used in the composer’s opera of the same title. The protagonist is the 16th-century German artist Matthias Gruenewald, who – perhaps misguidedly – becomes involved in the political and social upheavals of the Peasants’ Revolt, itself an indirect result of the Protestant Reformation. In concert with the Chicago Symphony, music director Riccardo Muti conducted the symphony as part of a program that also contains works by Beethoven.

Sunday, October 25 8:00 pm

From the Hamburg State OperaSoprano Marina Rebeka has a thoughtful view of the title character, an ancient Druid priestess both in love and in conflict with an officer of the imperial army of Rome. In an Operawire interview, she says that Norma is many things: a warrior, a witch, a daughter, and a mother. She’s also a criminal, having broken her sacred priestly vows to get involved in a love affair and have two children with the Roman officer who’s trying to conquer her people. And she’s a deceiver for keeping the affair a secret. Rebeka reminds us that, for all the threatened and actual violence of the plot, Norma’s opening aria, the famous “Casta Diva,” is actually a prayer for peace. The singing cast is joined by the Hamburg State Philharmonic.
