WOSU’s first news director was hired in 1951, but back then serious local journalism rarely ventured beyond “ripping and reading” from the wire services. By 1970, thanks to a grant that allowed over a dozen news staff to be hired, WOSU had the largest radio news team in Ohio.

It was just in time because all hell was breaking loose on campus. Riots shut down Ohio State that spring and WOSU was ordered off the air for eight days. That controversial decision occurred even though WOSU news coverage was considered a vital and trusted information source for the community.

Today, journalism providing trusted content and programming to expand knowledge and discourse is one of the key strategic pillars of WOSU. Our local news team, NPR and PBS have certainly delivered on that goal for many years.

But over the past two years, you have sought us out in greater numbers than ever before. In a world of social media hype and misinformation, we cannot take for granted fact-based, professional journalism. Thank you for choosing us. Here are some highlights of recent months:

• AP Ohio names WOSU 89.7 NPR News best radio news operation in Ohio

• 89.7 NPR News sets audience records while becoming the #1 listened-to radio station in Columbus for several ratings periods

• WOSU’s digital services, especially local news coverage, sees remarkable growth with over 3.5 million unique web visitors last fiscal year

We continue to focus on growing WOSU’s ability to provide fair, trusted news coverage to help fill a deepening void in quality local journalism. Please consider a contribution to these efforts by donating online to 89.7 NPR News or consider a legacy gift to support WOSU journalists by contacting Dana Mack at [email protected]. Central Ohio directly benefits from any support of WOSU broadcast and digital journalism.

Thank you.

Small Joys with Hanif Abdurraqib

Abdurraqib’s distinctive style of cultural and artistic criticism is applied through the lens of popular music and autobiography. In the podcast Small Joys, produced with WOSU, Abdurraqib talks with writers and artists about what inspires them – an intriguing deep-dive for fans of literature, music, comic books, pop culture and anyone with an affinity for the arts. Funding for Small Joys is provided by The Columbus Foundation.

Columbus poet, essayist and cultural critic, Hanif Abdurraqib has been awarded a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant." His 2019 book, Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to a Tribe Called Quest, became a New York Times Bestseller. Abdurraqib has written five books including his latest release A Little Devil in America: Notes in Praise of Black Performance, which is a National Book Award nominee.

The MacArthur Fellows Program

Abdurraqib was one of 25 winners of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellowship grants announced at the end of September.

The Chicago-based foundation has awarded the "genius grants" every year since 1981 to help further the pursuits of people with tremendous talent. According to the foundation's website, "the fellowship is not a reward for past accomplishment, but rather an investment in a person's originality, insight, and potential".

Abdurraqib is the third winner from Columbus, following late artist Aminah Robinson (2004) and installation artist Ann Hamilton (1993).

“WOSU was the perfect platform for this, as a station that is tapped into the community here and has been serving it for many years. I saw this podcast as a unique opportunity to talk to and learn from artists with local roots. I also saw it as an opportunity to have open and candid conversations with people that didn't feel like traditional interviews – getting to the heart of what has kept people going in the past year.”

– Hanif Abdurraqib

For the first time ever, Ohio’s largest public radio stations will join together to launch a new statewide reporting effort. The Ohio Newsroom will tell the stories of all Ohioans, uniting us to address the issues that can make our state better for all involved. Thanks to a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, WOSU, Ideastream Public Media in Cleveland, and Cincinnati Public Radio will build upon their history of working together to expand high-quality, in-depth, fact-driven public service journalism on radio and digital platforms.

The Ohio Newsroom will reflect Ohio’s diverse population and rich culture. Listeners will hear voices from Ohio’s cities, suburbs and small towns. They will hear reports from the factory floor, the farm field, the research lab, the corporate corner office and the small business counter. The Ohio Newsroom will explore issues important to Ohioans, including healthcare, education, energy, the environment and many more.

The work begins with hiring an experienced managing editor who will build and lead a reporting team. You should start hearing and reading The Ohio Newsroom’s work in 2022.

This month brings us a series of concerts from ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. Host Boyce Lancaster presents four concerts on Sunday afternoons at 1pm.

On November 7, violinist Vadim Gluzman joins the PMCO for music by Piazzolla, Mendelssohn and Mozart, including Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet.

November 14, it’s An Evening of String Quartets recorded at Worthington United Methodist Church. As well as music by Bach, Beethoven and Ravel, there’s a performance of “Blueprint” by Caroline Shaw.

Tango in Paris features The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Piazzolla and a Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano by Nino Rota on November 21.

And the series wraps up on November 28 with David Danzmayr leading the PMCO in Mozart’s Gran Partita and the Symphony #4 by Mahler.

Thanksgiving on Classical 101 Thanksgiving has always been closely tied to the land, as a celebration of gratitude for abundant harvest. This Thanksgiving, join host Jennifer Hambrick for Seed and Soil, an hour of American music celebrating our beautiful and bountiful land.

“The Pasture” from Randall Thompson’s lovely choral work Frostiana takes you back to the soil, and movements from Mark O’Connor’s Americana Symphony bring you breathtaking views of America’s wide-open spaces. Then flow along the traditional Deep River and Shenandoah to a grateful end

with Jennifer Higdon’s uplifting Amazing Grace for string quartet. Hear Seed and Soil Thanksgiving Day at 11am on Classical 101.

Thanksgiving also brings us two annual favorites from American Public Media. Hear Giving Thanks with host John Birge from 8am - 10am, followed by Every Good Thing at 10am.

Giving Thanks sounds the way Thanksgiving feels…inviting, warm, and festive. No clichés about pilgrims and pumpkin pies. Instead, it’s a contemporary, thoughtful celebration of the spirit of the holiday. This year, special guests include Stanley Tucci and poet Naomi Shihab Nye. Music from Eric Whitacre, Bach, and Copland completes the scene.

David Danzmayr
