other Colonies. Archdeacon Coaster, writing from Bonavista, April 26th, said that

times were very poor there; scarcely any food in stores; only for Gov­ernment relief, conditions would be bad.

1827-Mechanics Society formed, March 3rd. Beothic Society instituted for colonization of native Indians; none

were discovered. Bishop Inglis, Anglican Bishop of Nova Scotia, first Protestant

Bishop in Newfoundland, consecrated St. jopn's Church.

Reward offered for two escaped convicts, Power and Cumrnings. Robert H. Prowse born at Port de Grave, April 19th.

1829-Bishop Fleming consecrated by Dr. Scallan at St. John's in old

Chapel, October 28th. Bills of lading established, containing particulars of packages ,

whence shipped, etc. Big meeting at Hr. Grace to petition Home Authorities for local

Go.vernmen t. Shawnanditti,_ a captured Beothic, died at St. John's. Rev. Dean Cleary ordained Priest at Enniscorthy by Dr. Keating. Fishermen and Sharemen's Association organized; officers wore silk

crimson sashes. Most of the mercha nts walked in the procession, which took place the following year.

1830-First grant of £100 given to build Petty Harbor Road. First load of fresh frozen fish brought to St. John's from Fortune

Bay. Right Rev. Dr. Power, Bishop of St. John's in the seventies, born

at New Ross, Ireland. Bishop Scallan, Roman Catholic Bishop. died May 29th. Gold medal and £100 awarded George Harvey , of Dead Island, for

rescuing 163 passengers and crew of emigrant ship Despatch two years previous.

Big meeting for local government at St. John's; Dr. Carson attended.

1831-First coach road opened to Portugal Cove. District of Bay Bulls erected into a Parish, Rev. Dean Cleary

appointed its first Pastor; on October 31st he entered on this new field of labor.

1832-Representative Government granted. Big fire at Harbour Grace; 96 houses burnt. Eastern Coast blocked with ice till June 6th. James McBraire, Esq. , merchant, died in Scotland, March 24th.

1833-First Presentation Nuns arrived from Ireland; introduced by Bishop

Fleming. First House of Assembly opened January 6th; J. B. Garland, Esq.,

Speaker.

Many persons destitute at St. John's; £100 given for relief by B.I.S. Captain Carew of St. John's presented with prize flag by R. Job,

Quarantine laws begun.

1834-Government Savings Bank instituted. Peter Downing executed in January for the murder of a man

name Bray, child and maid servant, Harbour Grace. Mrs. Snow of Port de Grave executed July 21st for the murder of

her husband. Manderville and Spring executed, accomplices of Mrs. Snow. Governor Prescott arrived first time, 1st November. Judge Lilly, Esq., appointed acting Judge Supreme Court.

1836-Bank of British North America began business in November. John Brown, Esq., Chief Magistrate, St. John's, died January 29th. William Armstrong, marshall Supreme Court, died February 14th. Bill to establish Classic Academy introduced into Assembly. William Dickson, Esq., coroner, St. John's, died. Second general election in Newfoundland.

1837-Rev. William Ellis, Methodist Minister, died September 20th. British Society founded, January 3rd, in the house of Thomas

Dammeral, Water Street, St. John's West. James Hippisley, merchant, Harbour Grace, native of Bristol, died

August 24th. Head Constable Phippard, St. John's, died June 5th. Dr. Dobie died at Brigus, 21st June; native of Kirkaldy, Scotland.

1838-John Munn, Esq., merchant, married to Naomi Munden, of Brigus. Trinity Benefit Club organized. James Blakie, Magistrate, St. John's, died June 2nd. James Stewart, Esq., formerly merchant, St. John's, died at

Greenock. Hon. James Crowdy married to a daughter of Hon. J. Dunscombe,

September 9th. John Gervas H. Bourne appointed Chief Justice; took office Sept. 26. Brig N orval launched; largest ship till then built at Harbor Grace.

1839-Simon Solomon, Esq., first Postmaster, died Dec., aged 72 years. Thomas Foley, Esq., merchant, Harbour Grace, died June 16th. Benevolent Irish Society incorporated, October. Thomas Harrison, Esq., merchant, Hr. Grace, died February 15th. Fifteen ten em en t houses burnt at St. John's, west of Beck's Cove. J. B. Jukes, Esq., made geological survey of Newfoundland.

1842-Mr. Henry Devereux appointed Notary Public; first Roman Catholic

to hold it. Mercy Nuns first arrived, June 19th. First parade Hr. Grace Temperance Society, New Year's Day. Col. Bonnycastle, author of Newfoundland in 1842, left for Quebec. Professor Stuwitz, of Bergen, Norway, died at St. John's, June 22.

1843-His Grace late Archbishop Howley born at St. John's, Sept. 25th. Amalgamated Assembly opened , January 17th. Convent School of Mercy opened at St. John's, May 1st. Wife of Private Secretary Harvey, of Government House, gave

birth to a daughter. Big meeting on Parade Ground, favouring repeal for Ireland. First procession of Father Matthews Society at St. John's, Jan. 6th. Dr. William Carson , advocate of local government, died Feb. 26th. Hon. W. Thomas gave his sessional pay for charity. ,

1844-First Roman Catholic Chief Justice in Newfoundland, Mr. Norton S .S. North America, first mail and passenger ship, arrived April 24. Big fire at Hr. Grace, June 5th, £25,000 worth of property destroyed. Rev. George Baring Cowan, Minister St. Paul's Church,, Harbour

Grace, died June 12th. Dr. Hanrahan , Carbonear, lost in a snow storm near Pack's Farm,

tn January. His Lordship Bishop Feild arrived first time, July 4th. Dr. D. Dwyer, member of Royal College Surgeons, Dublin, died

at St. John's, May 31st.

1847-First Lunatic Asylum instituted at Palk's Farm, St. John's West.

1848-Chloroform first used at St. John's by Dr. Samuel Carson. Water first brought through pipes from George's Pond. Meeting held at Court House, in favor of Responsible Government. His Lordship Bishop Feild gran ted land for cemetery, June 24th. Bishop Mullock appointed coadjutor to Bishop Fleming.

1849-J ohn Shea, Esq., native of St. John's, elected Mayor of Cork, Ireland Cemeteries first opened outside city limits. Mr. Hoyles introduced bill in Assembly to build a Poor Asylum. First cattle show in St. John's, held opposite Government House. Earl of Dundonald visited St. John's. Munn & Ridly, Harbour Grace, ask Government for grant of

money to build grist mills.

1850-Colonial Building first opened, January 28th. St. John's Academy opened, June 13th. Dorcas Society established at Carbonear. Savings Bank robbed of £413, November 30th. Bishop Fleming died, July 14th. Roman Catholic Cathedral opened Sunday, January 6th.

1851-Hon. George Shea born, July 4th. At Harbour Grace, December 9th , meeting held to introduce st~am

to the Island. Telegraph line completed from St. J o_hn's to Conception Bay,

November 24th. Newfoundland Weslyean School Society established at St. John's. Kent versus Parsons libel heard before Judge Brady; verdict for

plaintiff. Public meeting held to promote direct steam communication from

St. John's to England.

1852-Gas introduced into Harbour Grace by Alexander McAuslan. First Masonic ball held at St. John's, January 21st. Telegraph office first opened to the general public. "Spring of the Wadhams"; 40 vessels lost at sealfishery.

First Confederation delegation to Ottawa, September 21st. Disastrous spring at seal fishery; many vessels lost. Duke and Duchess of Athol arrived at St. John's in troop ship. 1868-A. M. McKay, Esq., given valuable present, worth £200, by the

new York, Newfoundland and London Telegraph Co., for the great energy displayed by him as their agent in this country.

January 19th. Field Marshal Lord Haig arrived at St. John's, unveiled Soldiers~

Memorial, July 1st. Three man o' war ships, Hood, Repulse, and Adelaide, arrived

in Conception Bay, September 9th; the former, largest ship of war in the world.

T. I-Iollis Walker, a Recorder of Derby, England, opened in the Leg­islative Council Chamber, Jan. 7th, the investigations relating to al­leged misdoing in the Public Departments.
