The New Student
The student will arrive at University:• Familiar with IT, the Web, collaborative
technologies, …• Will have used broadband at home and/or at
school• Will have mobile devices such as mobile phones,
digital cameras, MP3 players for social use and will want to exploit them to support learning
• Will already be a creator of digital resources• Will expect the provision of networks and
networked applications to be as could as if not better than the student is already familiar with

The student will arrive at University and find:• At least an adequate level of computers available
to support the student's learning needs• Access to a wide variety of applications which can
support a variety of learning styles• The ability to connect the student's own devices to

student to be a creator of resources• …

The Learning Environment
The student will arrive at University and find:• Lecturing staff who are familiar with or have an
understanding of the networked applications the student may wish to use
• An assessment scheme which can allow for the diversity of learning which the environment aims to provide
• A technical support infrastructure which can minimise technical problems and help focus on the learning aspects
• Acceptable use policies which ensure that the IT infrastructure can be used effectively but is not used to constrain legitimate approaches to learning

The Learning Resources
The student will arrive at University and find:• A variety of learning resources (both digital
and real world) which can support a variety of learning styles
• Simple means of locating, accessing, using and repurposing the resources
• The ability to access lectures, talks, etc. on the student's portable MP3 player/video player to support revision, etc.
• The student can be involved in creating learning resources which may be used by other students

A Collaborative & Open InfrastructureThe student will arrive at University and find:
• The ability to easy communicate and collaborate with the student's peers
• The ability to easy communicate and collaborate with lecturing and support staff
Students and staff will:• Be able to exploit resources (information,
data, software) which are freely available for use within minimal licensing restrictions
• Be willing to make their resources available in a similar fashion
