OVERVIEWWILL Interactive, Inc. (www.willinteractive.com) is the

nation’s leading developer of interactive training simu-

lations. WILL’s development and distribution partners

include the US military, the National Football League,

The Anti-Defamation League and more. These simula-

tions are called “Virtual Experience Immersive Learn-

ing Simulations” (VEILS®

) and are an engaging cross

between video games and movies that have created a

powerful new education and training genre.

VEILS®

immerse users in a movie-like environment with

live actors (not animated) and task them to perform

under realistic day-to-day stresses. Users assume the

roles of lead characters in an interactive movie, make

real-life choices and experience the consequences of

their actions. VEILS®

allow learners to make tough de-

cisions in the safety of cyberspace so they are better

prepared when they encounter them in real life.

BACKGROUNDIn 2012, WILL launched the ‘Simulate A Better World Challenge’ with an all-star

panel of judges that included legendary news anchor Tom Brokaw, entertainment and

media pioneer Gerry Byrne, Congresswoman Connie Morella and veteran and author

Wes Moore. The open competition sought to identify an important societal issue that

could effectively be addressed through WILL’s patented VEILS® interactive behavior

modification methodology.

J THE NEED

• More than 2.5 million Americans have served our

country in uniform since 2001.

• The United States Department of Labor estimates

that the military discharges 160,000 active service

members and 110,000 Reserve and National Guard

members annually. Statistically, about 32,000 of

those veterans will join the ranks of nearly 1 mil-

lion veterans already unemployed.

• The 2013 Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of Amer-

ica (IAVA) Member Survey reports that 16% of

respondents are unemployed and 45% of respon-

dents that are unemployed have been unemployed

for one year or longer.

• Employers interested in hiring veterans are often

missing the right tools to identify, understand

and support the strengths that veterans bring to

the workplace.

• Many veterans are challenged to translate their

military experience into civilian terms, to deal with

thelingeringeffectsoftheirmilitaryserviceinclud-

ing operational stress injuries, PTSD, TBI, and other

unseen and physical injuries, as well as family, iden-

tity, cultural and other transition-related stressors.

• There is no so-called “employment agency” for

veterans when they return from service. It is

incumbent upon the private sector to augment

existing services for returning veterans and hir-

ing managers.

J THE SOLUTION

The Coming Home Project and WILL Interactive

developers worked together to create “Reinventing

Michael Banks” – a new, state-of-the-art interactive

VEILS®

simulation dedicated to helping veterans,

their families and employers address the challenges

of transitioning from active-duty service to meaning-

ful civilian employment. Reinventing Michael Banks

utilizes WILL’s unique learning methodology that

combines instructional design, behavioral science,

adult learning theory and gaming theory to help

improve individual decision-making and performance

intheefforttoemploy,trainandretainveterans.

Reinventing Michael Banks was offi-

cially launched on Veterans Day 2013 at

reinventingmichaelbanks.com.

A $500,000 VEILS® produced at no cost to the

entrant who submitted the topic that the judges

determined would have the greatest positive impact

on American society.

PRIZE

In October 2012, WILL and the judges announced

that San Francisco-based non-profit The Coming

Home Project, dedicated to supporting veterans and

their families, had been selected as the winner.

Veteran transition and reintegration into the workforce is an enormous

social and moral issue in America since we send less than one per cent

of our population to bear 100% of the wounds and deaths of battle.

Moreover, returning veterans are re-entering a civil economy and society

that has changed considerably since they first volunteered to provide

security for all of us. The needs are four fold: jobs, additional training,

counseling for emotional disorders and help in navigating the civil culture

and government bureaucracy.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

WILL has committed to underwriting the process of

creating the VEILS®

for the Coming Home Project.

However, there are over two million other veterans

andHRexecutiveswhowouldbenefitfromusing

Reinventing Michael Banks and WILL wants to make it

as widely available as possible. There is nothing like a

VEILS®

available to veterans or hiring managers today

and Reinventing Michael Banks can immediately be

deployed by existing veteran assistance campaigns

such as Hiring Our Heroes and Got Your 6.

Reinventing Michael Banks will be the connective

tissuetoexistingeffortsbyimmersingandengag-

ing veterans, their families, and employers in a

realistic way that will build empathy, understanding,

and cooperation.

• Sales, advertising and marketing to build interest

in the VEILS®

• Website creation and support

• Bandwidth costs

• Advertising and marketing costs (online, print,

TV, radio)

• Technical integration into corporate, military and

non-profitsystems

• Creation of a facilitator guide

• User support (technical issues, help desk, ques-

tions, etc.)

• Packaging and replication costs

In order to keep Reinventing Michael Banks free for all

interested organizations, WILL Interactive and The Com-

ing Home Project are seeking progressive organizations

for sponsorship of the nationwide distribution of the

video simulation.

REACH AND IMPRESSIONSOur goal is to make this simulation available to the

hundreds of thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan vet-

erans currently out of work and the approximately

270,000 annually-discharged active duty, Reserve

and National Guard service members. Reinventing

Michael Banks will also be made available to employ-

ers throughout the United States. Our distribution

plan includes an aggressive, proactive outreach

program to connect with as many unemployed

veterans as possible, including through partnerships

with national and grassroots initiatives that support

veteran employment.

Distribution Partners would host Reinventing Mi-

chael Banks banner placements on their respective

websites that would lead all prospective users to

reinventingmichaelbanks.com. They could also host

in-person training sessions for their members to ac-

cess the simulation as a teaching tool. These include,

butarenotlimitedto:

• Hire Heroes USA: (hireheroesusa.org) In 2012

almost 2,000 new veterans registered for Hire

Heroes USA assistance and nearly 400 more were

helped at two-day workshops focused on provid-

ing assistance to wounded, ill, or injured ser-

vice members.

• Goodwill:Since2011,Goodwillhashirednearly

1,800 veterans and military family members, and it

has served nearly 100,000 more with job training

and placement services.

• Hiring Our Heroes (US Chamber of Commerce)

committed to hire 500,000 veterans and their

spouses by 2014

Additionally, WILL Interactive will execute an

initiativesincluding:

• Department of Labor

• Department of Defense

• DepartmentofVeterans’Affairs

• Department of Homeland Security

• TheOfficeofPersonnelManagement

WILL Interactive will also implement an outreach

campaign to U.S. senators, congressmen, gover-

nors and mayors of large U.S. cities that introduces

Reinventing Michael Banks and makes the program

available online.

“ WILL Interactive and VEILS

® are wonderful interactive programs that offer veterans,

their families and the community the opportunity to experience real life situations from the

comfort of their own home, without real consequences. We have been honored to share

these programs with our community and recommend they continue to be shared in yours.”

CREATIVE BRIEFReinventing Michael Banks contains approximately

40 minutes of live action footage. Users enter into

the interactive learning environment as the lead (or

“playable”)charactersina“slice-of-life”featurefilm.

The scenarios challenge users to apply their judg-

ment, decision-making skills and experience to situa-

tions faced during the job search. There are points in

the program where users make life-altering decisions

– whether they realize it at the time or not.

Whenusersfinishtheentiresimulation,havingmade

critical decisions along the way, they get a brief

glimpse of how the main character moves on suc-

cessfully in his life and career.

J STORYLINEThe story is based on real events and follow a

numberofplayablecharacters:arecentlyseparated

service member (Army), a corporate recruiter, a hu-

man resources professional, and a mid-level supervi-

sorinanon-specific,medium-sizemetropolitanarea.

Events take place in their homes, workplaces and

prospective workplaces, etc.

J PLAYABLE CHARACTERS:• Michael Banks: 26, from Oklahoma City, OK.

Served with a transportation unit in the US Army

for six years. Deployed three times, once to Iraq,

twice to Afghanistan, Michael has seen serious

action. He was a truck driver and a squad leader

onhisfinaldeployment.Asidefromastintstock-

ing shelves at a big box store, the Army is the only

career Michael has known, but with the drawdown

and reduction of forces, he felt that he and his

family (wife of two years, Megan, and their baby

girl,Samantha)wouldbebetterofflong-termifhe

entered the civilian workforce. Michael credits the

military with providing him focus and maturity.

• Randy Overmyer:40s,corporaterecruiterwho

interacts with Michael at a job fair.

• Joyce Duncan:30s/40s,thesoleHRprofessionalat

Levco Corp., a small shipping container manufac-

turer, who interviews Michael for a warehouse job.

• Gary Cole: 40s, the mid-level manager who is re-

sponsible for on-boarding Michael after he is hired.

Other non-playable characters populate the world of

the story, creating a context that is relatable, believ-

able, and engaging for a wide range of users.

Michael’s story focuses on his job hunt in the con-

text of his life and family obligations, adjustment to

civilian life, being home, and struggles with malaise

and lack of motivation. Michael’s story is relevant to

all services and multiple ranks by stressing common

experiences, challenges, and coping strategies.

As Michael struggles with his search for employ-

ment, the user has the opportunity to switch points

of view. This provides educational opportunities

for potential employers, as well as the chance for

service members to see life from “the other side of

the desk.”

In addition, Michael’s story has snippets of inter-

views from service members who have lived through

the challenges of reintegration.

J TEACHING AND DECISION POINTSFor the Michael Banks storyline, the following

themes are introduced requiring the player to make

critical,real-lifedecisions:

• Thefirstyearafterleavingmilitaryserviceisa

crucial time for service members to stay motivated

and upbeat and actively seek employment. During

this culture shift, service members may encounter

practical and emotional challenges, and Reinventing

Michael Banks provides strategies for dealing with

challengesspecifictothejobsearch.

• Dealing with rejection and remaining positive dur-

ing a long-term job hunt.

• Interacting and communicating with your partner.

• Understanding that appreciation for a veteran’s

service does not automatically translate to ease in

job seeking. Even combat veterans are expected to

convince prospective employers of their value.

• You got the job! Congratulations…now what

do you do? The importance of communication,

assimilation,thedifferencesandsimilaritiesof

the day-to-day experience in military and civilian

workplaces, etc.

J TEACHING/DECISION POINTS FOR THE HIRING MANAGER/CORPORATE CHARACTERS:

• Understanding the value that military experience

brings to the workplace.

• Howfamiliaritywithdifferentmilitaryranksand

types of personnel enable hiring managers to

better evaluate candidates and assign the right

responsibilities to new hires.

• Effectiveinterviewingstyles(behavioralandsitua-

tional) can lead to conversations that invite service

members to shift out of the polite and respectful

mode that they tend to exhibit and facilitate a

more revealing dialog.

• Once a veteran is hired, there are strategies for

helping with on-boarding, assimilation, continuing

trauma (PTSD) and retention.
