Kentucky & Daniel Boone• Cumberland Gap is the

mountain pass that was first a trail through the mountains into KY

• An Indian trail was widened for wagons & became known as the Wilderness Road

• Daniel Boone was an expert hunter and woodsman, and understood the Indians

• The 2nd settlement in KY was named Boonesborough in his honor

The Catholic Church Spreads West

• The 2nd diocese in the U.S. was Bardstown, Kentucky

• Bishop Benedict Joseph Flaget sent priests throughout the Ohio Valley

• Priests who traveled on horseback and celebrated Mass in homes & outdoors were called circuit riders

Father Demetrius Gallitzin was a famous circuit rider priest

The Southern Frontier

• Andrew Jackson defeated Seminole & Creek Indians in 1814 at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend

• The states of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi were added from this territory

• Spain sold the Florida Territory to the U.S.
