A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA CHURCH
Dedicated in 1882, St. Patrick’s Cathedral located on the plot of land on North Carancahua now occupied by the American Bank
Plaza, became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Corpus Christi when the Diocese was formed in 1912. Leading contributors to
the church were Captain Miflin Kenedy, who donated land, money, and pews. Mrs. Kenedy, who donated the sanctuary
windows, and the wife of then Corpus Christi Mayor J. B. Murphy, gave the statues. The ladies of the Altar Society gave the
main altar. Various parishioners, in memory of their deceased family members, donated the other stained glass windows. As
the Diocese grew, a new cathedral was planned and was dedicated in 1940. St. Patrick’s continued to have daily Mass for the
children of Incarnate Word Academy then located nearby. In 1951, after it caught fire, the church was dismantled and the
sanctuary and main part of the nave were moved to the present location to serve the newly created “Our Lady Star of the Sea”
parish. The altar, statues and stained glass windows were saved and reinstalled in the little church. Thus a portion of the old St.
Patrick’s Cathedral remains standing, a memorial to the pioneers of Corpus Christi. Over the years, the parish has grown to
include families from all parts of Corpus Christi, Portland, Gregory, Taft, Aransas Pass and Ingleside who seek a small “country
church” atmosphere of worship and fellowship. In addition, our parishioners represent a broad cross-section of cultures and
backgrounds from various parts of the United States and a number of foreign countries.

There Will Be A Second Collection This Weekend
Catholic Home Missions Appeal
In today’s Gospel we return to the Last Supper to hear Jesus’ new commandment to love one another. Good stewards, as the
recipients of God’s unending love, take this commandment seriously. Though we are reminded of his love throughout the year, it is
Jesus’ actions and words during the feast of Passover that show us the extent of his love and the way we too can live a life of
stewardship: “… love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (John 13:34). Can we accept this
commandment from Jesus? Are we able to embrace this kind of discipleship? Can we humbly offer our selves in loving service to
one another? Retrieved from: catholicstewardship.com
We Are Glad You Joined Us This Weekend God proclaims at the end of our Second Reading from the Book of
Revelations, “Behold, I make all things new.” That is a good thing to
remember on this Fifth Sunday of Easter. In the opening verse of this reading
from Holy Scripture, John also says, “I…saw a new heaven and a new earth.”
Easter reveals this newness to us, and we must always keep it in mind.
The Greek word used for what is translated as “new” is kaine. As is normally
the case, that particular Greek word has multiple meanings, one of which is
“fresh.” We are not speaking of a heaven and earth which did not exist
before, but of a heaven and earth which are fresh in their newness. This is not
just a “new” perspective, but a better one.
If we strive to live out our lives as disciples of Christ, if we make a complete
effort to be His disciples, we inherit this new heaven. In it, as also indicated
in our Second Reading, God expresses His desire to be in close fellowship with us, and we in turn must desire to be His people.
Being God’s disciple should be the whole purpose of our lives. That is not easily achieved, nor is it without obstacles and
hurdles for us, but it is what our purpose should be. Retrieved from: http://www.catholicsteward.com
Sunday’s Readings:
Acts 14:21-27. Spreading the “Good News ” after Jesus’ death and resurrection, the disciples met many challenges. Yet the
faith spread rapidly among the Gentiles.
Revelations 21:1-5a. The new heaven and the new ear th in Revelations is realized
in and through us. God dwells in and among us.
John 13:31-33a;34-35. We have received a new commandment: to love one
another to the extent and in the manner Jesus loved. Transformed to love as the
Divine loves, we bring the presence of the risen Christ to the world.

get back to you as soon as I can. I hope you are having a wonderful, relaxing, and fun

Please be careful when walking in front of the church. Causeway Blvd. runs directly in front of the church and blends with the parking lot. An unsuspecting parishioner could be walking in front of the church and not realize that motorists are driving along the road.
Lord, we ask You to bless all who are sick. Give them strength in body, courage in spirit, and
patience in pain. Let them recover their health that they may joyfully praise your name. Amen
