AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT

No history of homeopathy can be complete without a discussion of the Age of Enlightenment. It was truly an unprecedented period in history. It was an era of higher education and discerning education. Questioning minds and cultural life centered upon

reason as the source and legitimacy for authority. This time is unparalleled in history. Mozart was in a fury of composition in Salzburg: The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni and Figaro. Alexander Pope’s “An Essay on Man” expressed an optimism and respect for reason that marked the era. Art exhibited order, balance and realism. The Age of Enlightenment simultaneously developed in Germany, Italy and other areas of Europe and the new world as well.

History is comprised of widespread movements that share similar ideologies. There are ages whose achievements continue to arouse awe and astonishment. How is it, I ask, that so many unrelated people could, in such synchronized harmony, all burgeon with seemingly different creations that all stem from the same root?

A road was being paved by the brilliant intellectuals, artists and musicians for rational science, for truth and for universal intellectual freedom. Authorities were being questioned as citizens sought legitimate leaders rather than royal figureheads. Musicians were moving away from Bach’s polyphonic intricacies. Societies were weary of the injustices they suffered at the hands of royalty and aristocracy. People were tired of the insufficient medicinal methods of their age.

In France, the Declaration of the Rights of Man was drafted. In the United States, the Declaration of Independence was signed. And, in Germany, Samuel Hahnemann, the Father of Homeopathy, was born.

Father of Homeopathy Samuel Hahnemann

1755-1843

Samuel Hahnemann, the Father of Homeopathy, was born in Meissen, Germany in 1755. Hahnemann’s father was a porcelain painter and ably supported his three sons and two daughters until Germany was plundered by Frederick the Great in 1756, and the family was left destitute. His father oversaw young Samuel’s education at home where he instilled invaluable skills for independent study. A true child of the Age of Enlightenment, Hahnemann honed his critical thinking from an early age. His acumen did not go unnoticed. The local school recognized his intelligence, and by the age of 12, Hahnemann was tutoring Greek.

As a young man, Hahnemann traveled to Leipzig, where he briefly attended University. He moved to Vienna where he eventually caught the attention of a noted physician who found him a position with the Governor of Transylvania (Romania). Hahnemann was hired to organize the Baron’s library and act as the family’s physician (prior to completing his college education). In 1779, Hahnemann returned to Germany where he obtained his medical degree.1

As a young physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann was treating aristocracy and royalty in Germany and employing the prevailing methods of his day. He was a man of great intellect and tenacity and became increasingly dismayed with the ways of his profession. Common practices at that time included purging by bleeding, morphine to soothe a

child’s cough, mercury for just about anything and everything, and heroin to relieve asthma symptoms. It was not uncommon for patients to die as a result of their treatment, not their original ailment. Even George Washington died at the hand of this type of medicine. He was bled to his death by his physician.

Hahnemann was different. He was a revolutionary and a true member of the Age of Enlightenment. He didn’t just alter the medicine of his age; he completely turned it on its head.

During his 20s and 30s, while busy raising a family and traveling often, he pursued his avid interests in chemistry and translation (he was fluent in Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Arabic). These formative years led up to 1790, when he took it upon himself to translate the entire Materia Medica from English to German. During this time, his aversion to the inefficiency of modern medicine arose concomitantly with his growing awareness of a truer medicinal approach. Over the next few years, he began his first homeopathic experiments, which along with his questions, findings and provings, created a turning point and a true revolution in the history of medicine as Hahnemann joined his era’s milieu.

It was during this age, too, that holism was embraced by homeopathic medicine. The underlying concept in holism is that we are each an integrated whole; we are not fragmented into separate parts falling into different specific illnesses or diagnostic categories. Samuel Hahnemann recognized the unity of body and mind – a key principle in holism. Yet homeopathy certainly isn’t synonymous with holistic nor does it mean home remedy (as many people think). Instead, it is a strict discipline based on principles Hahnemann first proved nearly 200 years ago. His first rudimentary experiments soon developed into the precise and exact science of homeopathy, based on the Law of Similars, which states that any substance that can cause symptoms when given to healthy people can also heal those same symptoms when given in minute amounts to people who are not well. The Law of Similars was not a new concept. In the fourth century BC, Hippocrates wrote, “through the like, disease is produced, and through the application of the like, it is cured.”

Hahnemann also employed a technique known as homeopathic provings, that is, the testing of homeopathic remedies on people. “Provers,” as they’re called, take a substance that provokes particular symptoms. The detailed notes of their physical and emotional reactions are logged in a compilation called the Materia Medica.

These remedies are later given to people who experience the same symptoms as the provers did. Apis is a good example. Apis is made from the honeybee. It is effective for maladies that show bee-sting-like symptoms such as heat, redness, swelling and pain that is comforted by coolness. So, homeopathic honeybee might be given not only for bee stings but also for strep throat, urinary tract infections, boils and other maladies with similar symptoms. Provings done in the early 1800s are still used by homeopaths today. In what other field of medicine would a book written in the 1800s hold accurate and valuable information applicable today? Homeopathy has no fads. What worked for the royal family’s allergies in 1901 remains the same method of treatment today. As Hahnemann continued to unravel and define this exciting new science, he published his first homeopathic article in 1796 and also began teaching homeopathic principles at the University of Leipzig in northeastern Germany.

He treated people with small dosages (a novel idea in Europe at the time) and combined this methodology with the aforementioned Law of Similars (like heals like) and heal he did. The results were amazing. In 1813, the city of Leipzig, Germany, was hit hard with an onslaught of typhus. Allopathic physicians were only able to save 20-30% of the cases they treated. In stark contrast, Samuel Hahnemann saved 98% of those whom he treated homeopathically!2

Although homeopathy was first founded in Germany, the word homeopathy is based on the Greek words “homios” for similar and “pathos” for disease. Because homeopathy is based upon the “Law of Similars,” it is very effective when a well-chosen remedy is administered. These remedies are valuable in their curative power – as the royal family of England would attest. (They have used homeopathic physicians since before the turn of the last century.) Homeopathy also works on animals, babies and unconscious people, so it’s hardly attributable to what we call the “placebo effect”! Yet, that is what traditional medicine often calls it because no material substance can be found in homeopathic remedies. This occurs because the remedies are substances that have been highly diluted. One drop of tincture is diluted in one hundred drops of alcohol. This is shaken one hundred times. Then, a drop of this solution is diluted in another phial and shaken. This procedure is repeated 30 times. Understandably, not a single molecule remains of the original substance, yet the remedy’s strength is in the “blue print” or “energy” obtained from it. Contrary to our materialistic thinking, the more the substance is shaken and diluted, the more potent it becomes! It is strange, but true! Samuel Hahnemann used this phenomenon as the basis for his theory. After years

of work and countless experiments, he established this hypothesis to be true. Thus, the “Law of Similars” is not a theory. It is shown to be a resounding law of nature or a biological law that can be proven time and time again without failure. Hahnemann continued to develop homeopathic principles. He was a prolific writer and laid the sturdy foundations for a medicine that continues to heal in unprecedented ways.

Without a doubt, Hahnemann was a revolutionary man, not in the sense of battles and swords or of music and politics, but in his method of treating illness, or more accurately, in the method of healing the individual.

Great Women of Homeopathy As a homeopath, I find inspiration and encouragement in the homeopaths who came before me, and I find their examples worthy of emulation. Women who live in exemplary ways have held a lifelong allure for me. From their fearless approach to social change to their impassioned personalities, women of significance in any era offer an unending source of inspiration in their pursuit of graciousness, intelligence and feminine style. Whether in the field of medicine or business, women approach life from an outlook different from their masculine counterparts. And that woman’s perspective becomes even more heartfelt and piercing once she becomes a mother.

Several women in the world of homeopathy are worthy of our admiration. For example, Dr. Mercy B. Jackson became the first woman admitted to the American Institute of Homeopathy. She later served on the faculty of Boston University’s School of Medicine, where she was a professor of diseases of children. She was credited for demonstrating that Pulsatilla can be used to turn breech babies in the womb. (I’ve personally witnessed this phenomenon and can attest to its efficacy.) Without this discovery, many women and their babies would be subjected to unnecessary surgery.

Clemence Sophia Lozier, MD, (1813-1888) opened a homeopathic medical school for women at a time when it was almost unheard of for a woman to take on this role. She believed “that woman was, by every instinct and aptitude of her nature, better fitted for the medical profession than man.”3 We also have Florence Nightingale, MD, (1860-1919) in our corner. She was a homeopath as well as a surgeon — a little known fact that I wish were more widely publicized.

But the two most influential women in my professional life have been Dr. Dorothy Shepherd and Mother Teresa.

I consider Dr. Dorothy Shepherd to be my posthumous mentor. She was an English medical doctor practicing in hospital clinics and emergency rooms after WWI. She used conventional methods learned in medical school, hospitals and clinics until she learned of homeopathy via veterinarians and homeopathic physicians practicing in England at the time. After devoting her full attention to the study of this vast body of medical literature, she slowly began to incorporate homeopathy into her daily practice in the emergency room and clinic where she worked.

As WWII rolled around and treating trauma again became a daily responsibility, Dr. Shepherd depended upon her new medicine entirely. Once she employed homeopathy full time, she never reverted to the “ways of old” again. Having a very busy practice and full staff at her call, she taught and instructed them in the homeopathic protocols for all emergencies, including pre and post-operative procedures. Conventional antiseptics were replaced with Calendula; broken bones were treated with Arnica before the bone was set. Conventional analgesics that carried side effects were replaced by Hypericum, Arnica and Ledum. Fever cases were given Belladonna; psychological trauma was treated with

Aconite and Gelsemium. And her case load wasn’t light. London and the surrounding areas where she practiced experienced frequent bombings, so her experience was like working in a MASH unit.

Dr. Shepherd’s work was one of diligence and commitment to her patients and dedication to the calling of homeopathy. And indeed it was a calling of stature. Her records are documented evidence against the tide of conventional modern medicine. In her books, she illuminates her day-to-day experiences of transformational thought, carrying her away from drug-laden medicine to homeopathy.

Here is a woman, thoroughly trained in the ways of her professors and colleagues, who found her conventional tools frustrating and causing more harm than good. Before her transition to a more rational method of medicine, she found her clinic a source of frustration and ill equipped for the sheer numbers of civilians who flooded her doors. And so she found a solution in homeopathy.

12

Yet Dr. Shepherd is not the only symbol of hope who embraced and valued homeopathy. Mother Teresa, a Catholic nun awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, was a crusader for the medical care of the poor in India. She used homeopathy alongside conventional medicine, but she had a particular fondness for homeopathy because of its effectiveness and low cost. Therefore, she taught her order of sister-nurses to treat the poor with this gentle and effective medicine. She and her sisterhood are reputed to have set up tables in the markets on the streets of Calcutta with their homeopathy kits and repertories ready for the onslaught of the needy. We don’t know exactly what type of maladies she treated, but we can imagine that she and the sisters treated scabies with Sulphur, skin infections with Arsenicum iodatum, the grieving with Ignatia (named after St. Ignatius) and the wounded with Calendula.

Mother Teresa opened her first homeopathic medical dispensary in Calcutta in 1950 and her followers, the Missionaries of Charity, continue her work throughout the world today.

Can you imagine the struggle these women endured not only as female practitioners in a male dominated profession but as champions of homeopathy in an allopathic world? For even then the two factions were at odds. Why was conventional medicine so threatened by these women? The answer is simple — competition in the market place. The conventional doctors and their fraternal trade organizations didn’t fancy the fact that women and homeopaths might intrude on their turf.

It is no wonder that these women were stalwarts in their respective worlds. They had inner strength, probing minds and hearts attuned to the good of humanity.

But taking inspiration from them doesn’t mean replicating what these icons of homeopathy did for the world; instead, we can utilize their creative gestures as springboards to express our own point of view.

Even those of us who have decided to take homeopathy to its fullest extent just in our own lives are worthy of kudos. We don’t need to be a Florence Nightingale or a Mother Teresa treating the masses. But for our children and grandchildren, for our extended families and for future generations, our efforts will put us on the map of doing what’s right for humanity. We may not be honored with a Nobel Prize, but to cure one infection in our child, to soothe one anxious night, to offer counsel to even one child is reward enough.

And so, the ladies who have inspired me would have to include you, too. I may not know you personally, but I know I’d be moved by your tenacity, love, devotion and willingness to think outside of the box for the sake of those you love. Isn’t that what being a mother is about?

I hail these women as well as you, dear reader. Your courage to stand against the forces of cartel medicine positions you as a beacon of light amongst the great women of history. They, and also you, should be imitated for you are the carriers of the good name of homeopathy and the well being of humanity.

Constantine Hering Homeopathy had its beginnings among the aristocracy and royalty of 18th century Germany, but it didn’t remain just there. Hahnemann’s revolutionary thinking gained acceptance not only in Germany but in France and England, too. Thanks to Constantine Hering, it also made its way across the ocean to America.

In the 1830s, a German homeopath, Constantine Hering, emigrated to the United States. where he became known as the Father of American Homeopathy. His observations of the healing process became known as “Hering’s Law of Cure.” These principles are used by homeopaths to assess health history and evaluate the curative process. They are not absolute but should be used as a guideline in prescribing. Hering’s First Law is that healing progresses from the innermost part of the patient, such as the lungs, to the outermost area, such as the skin. Someone with a lung infection may develop a skin rash as healing progresses. This is a good sign — the body has externalized the disease by shifting it to the outer area of the body. Conventional medicine would likely treat the rash with a suppressive cream, which could in turn lead to another lung infection. According to Hering’s Second Law, symptoms appear and disappear in reverse order from which they occurred. This means that the most recent symptoms will usually be the first to be healed. Old ailments (usually those that were suppressed or never completely healed) may reappear briefly, only to resolve quickly and permanently. Take for example, a person suffering from migraine headaches. After the headaches disappear, pain from an old shoulder injury may resurface, but this pain will dissipate in short order. A homeopath will rejoice, for this is a sign of true and complete healing. This is not always evident in an acute illness but is often observed in a chronic one. Hering’s Third Law is that healing progresses from the top of the body to the bottom. For example, a person with arthritic pains throughout the body will notice improvement in the upper part of the body before the lower.

These guiding principles formulated by Constantine Herring further developed the foundational principles with which Hahnemann first built homeopathy.

The Growth of Homeopathy in the United States Thanks to Hering’s influence, other American doctors began to appreciate the benefits of homeopathy, and soon, schools, hospitals and private practices in homeopathy were established. Throughout history, homeopathy gained favor with many prominent people including, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Louisa May Alcott, Daniel Webster, John D. Rockefeller, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Dizzy Gillespie, the Royal Family of England and many others. There were more than 100 homeopathic hospitals and 22 homeopathic medical schools in the United States, similar in number to allopathic hospitals and institutions. Throughout the 1800s, both allopathic and homeopathic physicians treated diseases such as small pox, typhoid, diphtheria, tuberculosis and syphilis, as well as illnesses more common today, such as influenza, allergies and menstrual disorders. At that time, allopathic tools included purging, bloodletting and other primitive means to treat these diseases. The homeopaths, however, had an arsenal of remedies as effective today as they were then. In the 19th century, a fever of 105º was given precisely the same homeopathic treatment as it is today. In fact, most homeopaths prize the texts written by the masters of infectious diseases as a mainstay of their library. Nothing in homeopathy is capricious. Indeed, every remedy has been used efficaciously for more than two centuries. It’s interesting to consider how many modern hospitals had their roots in homeopathic practice, as is the case with the hospitals in the photos that follow. You may recognize some of these great buildings in your home town. At the end of the 1800s, many changes in medicine were occurring. While the educational standards for homeopathy were higher and more demanding, the allopathic practitioners began using heroic measures. By the first half of the 20th century, surgery and antibiotics appeared to act miraculously. This was particularly powerful because until that time, the allopathic physicians were depending on bleeding, purging, blistering and poisons such as mercury. Now the allopaths (conventional doctors) could offer seemingly painless methods to “cure.” The homeopathic physicians had always used only simple little pills, not surgical or heroic measures. Also, homeopathic consultations then, as now, took a good amount of time, often as long as an hour and a half per visit. However, with the cultural effects of the industrial revolution, the assembly-line mentality of getting the patient in and out within minutes became the norm in allopathic hospitals and doctors’ offices.

Trade organizations, including the American Medical Association (AMA), soon became the norm in the United States. The AMA was made up of a group of allopaths. Threatened by antagonistic “sectarian” groups, their attention was focused on the elimination of the homeopathic profession. The reason: the homeopaths were highly educated, had a fast-growing and well-organized system of efficacious medicine and were in direct conflict with the allopath’s methods. No drugs, said the homeopaths. Only drugs, said the allopaths. No unnecessary surgery, said the homeopaths. Surgery at every turn, said the allopaths. This clash, coupled with the desire for monopolistic gain of market share, became the foundation upon which a highly financed and well-executed smear campaign was designed. Its entire goal was to discredit homeopathy. The drive was funded by the burgeoning pharmaceutical industry in tandem with the AMA. As a member of the AMA, doctors were expected to follow rules and acts of conduct. One of these said that doctors who wanted to remain in the “club” were prohibited from accepting referrals from homeopaths, from referring patients to homeopaths and even from socializing with them. The AMA’s crusade was skewed towards formulating public opinion as well. The public was “educated” to believe that homeopaths were quacks. These tactics systematically extinguished homeopathy in the United States by the late 1960s. An interesting aside is that when this cartel completed the demise of homeopathy, it focused its attention on chiropractors. Having witnessed the power of the smear campaign against the homeopathic doctors, the chiropractic profession rallied, organized and wrestled to protect their reputation. Today, the public is aware of what chiropractic means and its value because of the counteraction of chiropractic organizations. However, doctors are still instructed by the AMA to abstain from recommending chiropractors. Unfortunately, most of them dutifully comply. In Europe and other parts of the world, the story is different. Homeopathy is alive and well because there is no AMA or pharmaceutical cartel like there is in America. When I went to school in England in the 1970s, a friend and I were crossing a busy London street when she was grazed by a bus. Her injuries were mild, but when the police appeared, they asked if she wanted to go to a homeopathic hospital or a conventional hospital. They offered a choice! The same holds true for all of free Europe, Germany, France, England, Italy, Holland, Spain and the United Kingdom as well as South America and India. Homeopathic hospitals, pharmacies and clinics thrive in these countries, while here in the United States the opportunity for its use was systematically destroyed by a self-serving medical faction.

Starting in the late 1970s, the resurgence of homeopathy began. In fact, it’s the fastest growing method of medicine in the United States. Homeopathy is again found in homes where families are looking for a safe, effective method of treating acute health problems. Homeopathy does not seek to cover up symptoms. Its goal is to get to the bottom of the issue and unearth the “imbalance” or illness. It stimulates the body to heal itself through gentle nudging via homeopathic remedies. When we listen to the body’s own language in the form of symptoms, we are guided to the correct remedy. Then the body and mind can re-balance as only each knows best. When visit after visit to the pharmacy for more and more medications brings no end to a medical problem, consider doing as many in the United States once did and Europeans still do: look entirely to homeopathy for relief. With a remarkable past, homeopathy offers a bright and hopeful future throughout the United States and the world.

Homeopathy and Pandemics

Homeopathy’s curative ability is not restricted to headaches, runny noses and fevers. Homeopathy has the ability to combat the most deadly illnesses and has made such striking impacts as to warrant historical significance. Yet, we know that history can be skewed by interpretations, omissions and bias. Unfortunately for homeopathy, its contributions to the treatment of epidemic illnesses have been sorely ignored.

Amidst the awful devastations wrought by the Influenza Pandemic that tore through 1918 America, homeopathy emerged as a force to be reckoned with!

And that’s saying quite a lot, considering that this pandemic, also known as the Spanish Flu, claimed 50 million people worldwide – that’s 34 million more lives than were lost during World War I. This flu could kill its victim within a couple hours or after a few short days when the sufferer suffocated to death from water-filled lungs.

Young adults were the most susceptible to this ravaging force, but homeopathy came to the rescue, quite literally, when it was administered.

Consider this: a Philadelphia man by the name of Dean W.A. Pearson collected influenza cases that were treated by homeopathic physicians. Of the 26,795 cases, the mortality rate was only 1.05%, while the average old, i.e., allopathic school had a mortality rate of 30%!

A humble physician, Dr. T.A. McCann from Ohio, stated, “I have treated 1,000 cases of influenza. I have records to show my work. I have no losses. Please give all credit to homeopathy and none to the Scotch-Irish American!”

In Rhode Island, Dr. Dudley Williams reported not losing a single patient to influenza, not a single one! His mortality rate for pneumonia was 2.1%. This is astonishing when one considers that allopathic physicians, who treated primarily with aspirin and quinine, lost 60% of their pneumonia cases.

Another physician, this one from Chicago, Illinois, reported that in a plant manned with 8,000 workers, only one man died. The homeopathic remedy, Gelsemium was essentially the only remedy used. Aspirin, vaccines and other drugs were never administered.4

These numbers don’t lie. Indeed, it’s futile to attribute these recoveries to a placebo effect, when thousands upon thousands were succumbing to a worldwide epidemic, and

those other thousands being treated with homeopathy are rising up from amidst the fallen.

When one counts the success rate with homeopathy’s treatment of the Spanish Flu, it is only regrettable that it was not used more. With the unbelievable curative ability of this medicine, it could have spared the millions who died.

Nearly a century earlier, another epidemic swept across the world – Asiatic cholera. It hit the United States in early 19th century, where homeopathy proved itself as a worthy combatant against the plunders of this deadly disease.

German homeopath Joseph Hypolyte Pulte, M.D., received a most unpleasant welcome when he first arrived in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1840. The community nearly drove him away, egging his home and ridiculing him to such a degree that, if not for his wife’s kind support and encouragement, he would have left. Thank goodness Pulte endured and was still in Cincinnati when the cholera epidemic broke out. He was ready and able to save every single patient he treated. Needless to say, the community was extremely grateful and finally gave him the respect he deserved.

In 1832, when cholera claimed 3,000 lives in New York City, homeopath William Channing had such success treating his patients with Veratrum, Camphor and Cuprum, his healing contributions became respected by the physicians and community of New York City.

In this same city, another homeopathic physician named Isaac Moreau Ward compared the treatment of homeopathic and allopathic medicines in 1832 and witnessed and affirmed that, without a doubt, homeopathy was effective to a much higher degree.5

Even though another homeopathic physician had no public hospital in which to administer homeopathy, the results of John Franklin Gray’s homeopathic protocols garnered the attention of the allopathic physicians in New York City, who then sought his reports and respected his efforts and homeopathy’s abilities.6

Homeopathy is a force to be reckoned with, but at the same time, it is a gentle power, a milde macht as famous homeopath Constantine Hering would say. It has the ability to restore health to those suffering not only from minor illnesses but also suffering from grave pandemics as well. Yes, homeopathy works and works powerfully without ever leaving a “drugged” sensation to those teetering on the brink of life and death!

It is a great pity that these extraordinary contributions to worldwide health and medicine have received so little of the bright spotlight that they deserve.

FLORENCE WARD SANATORIUM San Francisco, California

Though little information is available on this very successful private sanatorium and surgical hospital in California, we do know that it was a homeopathic hospital up until the earlier part of the 20th century. During its last recorded year, 430 patients were cared for in the hospital’s 47 beds. These patients were cared for with homeopathic medicines by a house staff of two. This number may be small, but it’s indicative of homeopathy’s efficacy and gentle power.

HAHNEMANN HOSPITAL San Francisco, California

Here is another prominent homeopathic hospital in San Francisco. It first opened in 1887. Although the hospital employed many physicians, only homeopathic medicines were used to treat the patients, numbering 1,245 in the hospital’s final year. The hospital’s statistics indicate 90 beds within what was then considered to be a modern facility. Not only did the Hahnemann Hospital care for its patients, but it also served as a three-year training school. The teachers were the physicians and surgeons working daily with the patients. Additionally, the Hahnemann Hospital provided clinical instruction for students from the Hahnemann College of the Pacific, thereby making this hospital a nurturing ground for the ill and the young and for aspiring physicians, too.

DENVER ORPHANS’ HOME Denver, Colorado

Shortly after its opening in 1883, the Denver Orphans’ Home housed 40 orphans. That number rose to more than 1000 by 1889. After a change of location, this caring place expanded to 50 rooms and 200 beds. In its last fiscal year, 75 patients were treated with homeopathy exclusively. Allopathic physicians were not even permitted to practice there.

Did you know that…

…The AMA fostered a campaign to eliminate homeopathy? In fact, the foundation upon which the AMA was girded was to eradicate the practice of homeopathy. Its crusade was twofold: 1) black ball any doctor who used homeopathy or who referred patients to a homeopathic doctor and 2) devise an advertising campaign aimed at the public to discredit homeopathy as quackery.

…On modern medicine’s watch, there has not been a single disease cured and many more created? GRACE HOSPITAL New Haven, Connecticut

Opening in 1892, this hospital provided care for 1,585 patients throughout its last recorded year. This stately facility was complete with 100 beds. All 31 of the hospital’s first physicians were members of the Connecticut Homeopathic Medicine Society and the Connecticut Eclectic Medical Society. Two physicians among them were women: Sarah B. Newton and Adelaide Lambert.

Did you know that…

…Homeopaths adhered to what was known as a controversial view during the 19th and 20th centuries? They believed that drugs of any kind were causing illness and that doctors who prescribed them were jeopardizing their patients. This was a blatant and blasphemous act akin to treason within the medical world.

WILMINGTON HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL Wilmington, Delaware

To best satisfy the growing needs of the expanding Wilmington area in November of 1887, a group of homeopathic supporters and physicians commissioned 27 women to explore the feasibility of a homeopathic hospital. They chose a permanent location for their community’s hospital thanks to a generous donation. A large home quickly became a functioning hospital.8 Don’t let the picture fool you! In this small hospital, 730 patients were treated homeopathically across its 70 beds. Accounts show that during its last recorded year, the outpatient ward took 560 cases.

CHICAGO FOUNDLINGS HOME FOR MOTHERS AND INFANTS

Chicago, Illinois

“Those having babies which they wish to dispose, whether they are children of sin or poverty, have but to leave them in the basket at the home and they will be cared for. No

questions will be asked or answered.”9

These were the words of Dr. George E. Shipman, when he and his wife opened this home for mothers and babes needing care regardless of the disdaining judgment they received from the society. Thanks to the benevolent gifts of Chicago’s upper-class, this hospital opened in 1871. Sixty beds were reserved for babes and 40 for mothers in this homeopathy-embracing hospital. No doubt, Dr. Shipman frequently used Chamomilla and Belladonna for the little ones! In total, he treated 596 patients during the hospital’s last recorded year.

CHICAGO UNION HOSPITAL Chicago, Illinois

This facility was both a hospital and a school, offering training to some 32 students and 61 beds to the suffering. Records show that in its last fiscal year, this hospital took in 1,611 patients. The property included the main building, the nurses’ home, and an annex.

Did you know that…

…Chicago was home to the great homeopathic physician, writer and educator, Dr. J.T. Kent? One of his students once remarked, “Dr. Kent peoples the world with remedies, making them so vital that as we walk on the street, we say to ourselves there goes Mr. Phosphorus; Mr. Sulphur neglected his bath again this morning; Miss Ignatia is still grieving; Baby Calcarea is still chewing that porkrind [sic]; how happy Miss Pulsatilla is out in the open air.”10

DAILY NEWS SANATORIUM Chicago, Illinois

On the shore of Lake Michigan, homeopathy was brought to thousands! The majority of cases treated in this well-equipped facility were those having to do with malnutrition. This and every other case was addressed entirely with homeopathic medicines. Thanks to the 6 house physicians and 12 visiting assistants from Chicago, homeopathy came to the rescue for many malnourished individuals. A total of 3,373 patients were cared for during the hospital’s last recorded year.

Did you know that…

…The American Medical Association tried to portray itself as a supporter of homeopathy? Nothing could be further from the truth. Although it’s true that they tried to incorporate homeopathic doctors within their association, it was only an attempt to dilute and weaken the homeopathic presence. By inclusion, they tried to demonstrate that homeopathy was not an alternative or something different but something reconcilable to allopathic medicine.

HAHNEMANN HOSPITAL Chicago, Illinois

Founded in 1855, this hospital provided not only a place of healing but also a school for educating nurses and doctors. The courses offered were extensive, covering vast subjects, ranging from chronic to acute, from injuries to influenza, from measles to eczema, and from arthritis to rheumatism.11 This hospital had 170 beds. In 1915, the dispensary wing alone treated approximately 20,000 cases! Their accounts state that 2,085 patients were cared for during the hospital’s last recorded year.

KELSO SANATORIUM

Bloomington, Illinois

To address the concern of the Mennonite community who were inspired to heal the sick,12 this hospital was founded in 1919 and operated until 1998. However, records do not indicate for how long homeopathy had been the medicine of choice during the hospital’s operation. Not only was this sanatorium a place of healing and recovery, but it was also a school for at least 12 students. While it functioned as a homeopathic hospital, it was described as well managed and equipped. In its last recorded year, the hospital’s 30 beds held 291 patients.

MONTGOMERY WARD AND COMPANY Chicago, Illinois

Although there was no official hospital for Montgomery Ward employees, a makeshift infirmary, stocked exclusively with homeopathic remedies, was set up in the company’s employee break room. It consisted of 13 beds for women and 2 beds for men. These were reserved for emergency situations, and when it was necessary, the seriously ill employees were taken to the nearby Hahnemann Hospital of Chicago. In 1915 alone, approximately 50,000 employees were treated at Montgomery Ward and Company including close to 1,100 accident cases. Physicians on staff at the Montgomery Ward and Company made 1,767 calls in 1915 – that’s an average of five calls each day! Of course, this doesn’t take into account the work done by the rest of this company’s staff of visiting and house physicians, as well as their nurses. Yes, they certainly had a great team to administer homeopathy and homeopathy alone. The nurses, director and assistants were graduates of homeopathy, as well as the specialists and x-ray technicians. Because homeopathy was (and is) so affordable, treating their employees with homeopathic medicine was a smart and frugal business choice! They did not spend exorbitant amounts on allopathic drugs, nor did their employees spend much time away from their tasks, as homeopathy provided safe, speedy and efficient recovery.

RUNNEL HOSPITAL Indianapolis, Indiana

This hospital was named after its Surgeon-In-Chief, Orange Scott Runnels. Considering his vast experience with homeopathy, one can surmise that this hospital was in very good hands! Among many of his accolades, Runnels had served as the president of the American Institute of Homeopathy and also as president of the Indiana Institute of Homeopathy. He was conductor of a military hospital during the Civil War and was vice president of the World’s Homeopathic Congress at Basel, Switzerland, in 1886.13 With experience including administrative, academic and ground zero, Runnels’ hospital was likely well adept. In the hospital’s last recorded year, 294 patients were treated. Twenty-five beds were available, and the patients were treated exclusively with homeopathic medicines.

Did you know that…

…In-fighting broke out between the allopathic and homeopathic doctors over their differing views on symptoms? Conventional doctors deem that symptoms are something to be disdained; hence, any symptom is worthy of a drug. Conversely, homeopaths believe that symptoms are the outward expression of an inner imbalance; they should not be covered up, for that will cause further illness in the future. Homeopaths use symptoms to determine the correct homeopathic remedy that will stimulate the person’s ability to adjust to the inner turmoil and resolve the imbalance.

This hospital was founded in 1876 and operated as a homeopathic hospital until it closed in 1919. This beautiful building was destroyed by a devastating fire ten years later.14 Because homeopathy fell out of favor, no hospital was ever rebuilt to replace it. The house staff numbered just three, yet they took care of 625 patients in one year according to the hospital’s remaining records. This hospital also worked in collaboration with the nearby university college and served as the university’s clinical department. Frankfort, Kentucky

Here, children suffering from epilepsy and mental retardation were treated with gentle, yet powerful homeopathic medicines. The institution was first founded in 1860 and later became the Frankfort Street Hospital until its close in 1970. 15 This institution was run entirely by homeopaths. The superintendent was also a homeopathic physician. During its last fiscal year, there were just two homeopathic graduates who served as permanent physicians. During this time, these physicians saw 270 patients. The institution was equipped with 300 beds and no doubt helped many children.

HAHNEMANN GENERAL HOSPITAL Baltimore, Maryland

The Hahnemann General Hospital, also called the Maryland Homeopathic Hospital, was founded in 1899. It later merged with St. Luke’s Homeopathic Hospital in 1908 to enable medical students from the Atlantic Medical College an opportunity to gain experience while practicing homeopathic methods in a hospital.17 After the union with St. Luke’s Homeopathic Hospital, the facility treated 1,515 patients during its last fiscal year. The number of patients cared for in the dispensary was nearly doubled – a total of 3,511 individuals. It wasn’t long before this hospital closed, presumably due to the pressures and competition from the allopathic medicine and the well-reputed Johns Hopkins University.

FRAMINGHAM NERVINE Framingham, Massachusetts

As its name implies, this institution cared for those suffering from minor mental and nervous cases. It opened in 1896 under the direction of executive officer, Ellen L. Keith, M.D. 19 Thirty-six patients were treated in its last reported year. This was a private institution that administered only homeopathic medicines and was funded entirely by the patients. The grounds included the servant’s quarters, main building, the physician’s home and even a stable.

…President William Howard Taft’s cousin, Mary Florence Taft, was a Boston physician and a homeopath? She was a vibrant and outspoken force within the academic and medical communities of Boston, Massachusetts. Indeed, Mary Taft was a mover and a shaker! She founded a private kindergarten in Rhode Island and saw to it that needed educational changes were introduced; she graduated from medical school at a time when women physicians were just being accepted; and she studied and practiced homeopathy just as homeopathy was on the decline in this country.20

HAHNEMANN HOSPITAL

Worcester, Massachusetts

As the name implies, the founding father of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann was influential in the intrinsic structure of this hospital. The staff was made up entirely of homeopaths who adhered to the Hahnemann school of homeopathy, some of whom were students of the revered Dr. James Tyler Kent, a great homeopath of the last century. This hospital provided homeopathic care up until the 1960s, though a homeopathic library and homeopathic pharmacy were preserved until the 1980s. Although it was first established in 1892, funds were insufficient to build an adequate hospital. By 1941, the hospital was ready to care for 15 patients. 21 This number rose to 281 patients in its last reported fiscal year.

Did you know that....

… Homeopathic physicians formed the first medical society, called the American Homeopathic Medical Society before conventional doctors formed the AMA? With the advent of antibiotics that seemed to be the panacea, conventional medicine tried to convey that homeopathy was an antiquated form of medicine. We know better today.

MASSACHUSETTS HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL Boston, Massachusetts

The floors of this busy hospital were also the stomping ground for the medical students of the Boston University School of Medicine. The senior students gained valuable knowledge working in the various hospital wards. During the last recorded year, this hospital treated almost 9,000 patients. The children’s ward took in 769 cases, and the infant’s ward took care of almost 1,100 babies. Maternity cases numbered 1,162, the surgical ward 3,503. In the year 1914, this hospital brought health and recovery to the sweeping majority of those suffering from contagious diseases. Diphtheria, scarlet fever and measles were successfully treated here. No doubt those who were restored to good health were grateful to the tiny homeopathic remedies that spared them amidst these epidemics.

Both allopathic and homeopathic medicines were used in this hospital to treat early cases of tuberculosis, known as incipient consumption, at the founding of this hospital in 1895.24 It was the first establishment of its kind in the United States to treat a working class suffering from tuberculosis. The hospital was funded by both state and private funds. Though homeopathic and allopathic medicines were both used within the same hospital, these treatments were never combined. One third of the patients admitted were cared for with homeopathic medicines. Records state that 249 patients were treated in one year. Homeopathy appeared to cure 87% of its patients. Homeopathy could also boast of “arresting” or bringing about the removal of the chief symptoms, mainly fever, cough and expectoration, in 62% of those treated vs. 52% treated with allopathic drugs.

TALITHA CUMI MATERNITY HOME

Boston, Massachusetts

“We believe that, however sad and wrong have been the circumstances leading to their present condition, the best possibilities for the future of these girls lie along the line of the mother-love and mother-responsibility.”26 Such were the gentle words meant for all young, unmarried women who came to this institution, seeking care and loving support during their pregnancies and until they were able to support themselves and their newborns. Those who could afford a weekly charge of $3.50 were required to do so. However, mothers were still welcome even if they couldn’t afford the fees. The hospital’s mission was to help others by encouraging them to help themselves. The hospital treated 190 patients during its last reported fiscal year.

WESTBORO STATE HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL

Westboro, Massachusetts

This hospital was comprised of more than 60 buildings on a large property. It opened in 1884 and treated those suffering from alcoholism and mental illnesses. Twenty years after it first opened, it treated 1,246 cases in one year. According to the accounts for its last reported year, 6 physicians treated 1,855 patients with homeopathic medicines.

Did you know that....

…Homeopathy was founded on sound laws of health in the late 1700s in Germany? Its scientific methods spread throughout Europe, South America, India and the United States via medical doctors who were disheartened with the conventional medicine of the day. By the time homeopathy reached the United States, homeopathy was met with excitement and approval. Thus, homeopathic medical schools, hospitals, pharmacies and clinics were built in response to the enthusiasm.

WESSON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL Springfield, Massachusetts

This hospital was founded by Daniel B. Wesson (1825-1906), a partner in Smith and Wesson, a successful firearms production company. This businessman was also a proponent of homeopathy and welcomed in the new century with a $100,000 donation for what became the Hampden Homeopathic Hospital in 1900. The hospital was later named Wesson Memorial Hospital but unfortunately switched to allopathic medicines in 1923.27 It was said to be one of the best homeopathic hospitals of its time, complete with a training school, a nurses’ home, 70 beds and a staff entirely devoted to homeopathy. During its last reported year, 639 patients received homeopathic care.

HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

Ann Arbor, Michigan

The city of Ann Arbor, Michigan, donated this property to the University of Michigan, and in 1900, one year later, the hospital opened. Those involved in its grand opening must have been very proud of their new hospital, as evidenced from their gleaming description of their new establishment: “The broad corridors, wide windows and glistening red oak woodwork make an attractive interior. At the end of each hallway are double glass doors opening into a ward, each intended for sixteen beds. At the front of each ward is a large sun parlor, to be used as a sitting room by patients able to leave their beds. Admirable forethought has taken care that there be no square corners or angles to catch dust and germs. “The plumbing attracts instant attention. It is elaborate and thoroughly modern. The Sturtevant heating system is guaranteed to change the air in the entire building every five minutes. The steam for the heating is carried from the University heating plant, a quarter of a mile distant.

“The operating rooms are up to date in every respect. The surgical amphitheater is finished in gray marble and is a model of beauty and utility. “The site is peculiarly well adapted to the purpose. It is directly across the street from the University grounds and is on the street car line. The five acres of land and fine residence make up the grounds and house of what for generations has been one of the finest estates in the city.”30 Though it no longer functioned as a homeopathic hospital after 1922, the building still remains on the University of Michigan’s campus and is now named North Hall. Before it closed, this expansive hospital was comprised of many buildings and facilities stretching across five acres. There was a main and an administrative building and laboratories for the operative, neurological and internal medicine departments. Nurses had their own residences, and there were facilities for those suffering from tuberculosis as well as a maternity building. During its last fiscal year, 4,170 patients received care from the outpatient department alone. Only one out of the five physicians on staff was a homeopathic physician. Reports indicate that the homeopathic physician treated more patients than any of the other four physicians on staff.

MARGARET KLOCK ARMOUR MEMORIAL HOME

Kansas City, Missouri

In 1877, a group of Kansas City women collaborated and commissioned a home for orphans and widows from the Civil War Era. Shortly thereafter, a woman by the name of Margaret Klock Armour arrived in the city. She had married into the wealthy Armour family, remembered as the founders of the world famous Armour Meat Packing Company. She became involved with the charitable work and was inspired to help fund the building of an adjacent home. Its purpose was to serve aged couples.35 It was staffed only by homeopathic physicians, and admittance was granted only to those who were at least 65 years old. During its last reported fiscal year, the home cared for 34 elderly clients. Certainly, homeopathy allowed many of the patients here a gentle and mitigated passing.

ANN MAY MEMORIAL HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL

Spring Lake, New Jersey

In 1904, a woman by the name of Mrs. Albionia N. Whartenby generously donated land for a convalescent home for women and children. In 1905, it was converted into a homeopathic hospital and was renamed Ann May Memorial Homeopathic Hospital in memory of Mrs. Whartenby’s deceased daughter. Nearly 100 years later, these humble beginnings are no longer detectable among the modern and million-dollar renovations that have contributed to what is now the K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore Medical Center.37 Back at the turn of the last century, this little hospital had 50 beds and treated 576 patients during one year. It also offered training to 17 students, and the outpatient wing cared for 742 individuals in its last recorded fiscal year.

BETHANY HOME FOR THE AGED Irvington, New Jersey

This homeopathic home for the aged was established in 1900 and also served as the birthplace for the Reformed Church Home. This denomination has a history of continual ministry to Americans. Here, only elderly individuals 60 years and older were admitted. During one year, 93 patients were given homeopathic care in 86 beds. Though this hospital was without the modern conveniences that today’s hospitals have, we certainly know that those cared for had one great advantage to modern luxury – safe, effective and respectful remedies that aided the dying.

ST. MARY'S HOSPITAL Passaic, New Jersey

This stately hospital is exemplary of the cooperation that can exist between the Catholic Church and homeopathy. Founded in 1895, this hospital was owned by the Catholic Church and run by the Sisters of Charity. The entire staff practiced and administered homeopathy. This calls to mind the harmony between homeopathy and Catholic ministry in the figure of Mother Teresa of Calcutta who, with her order, served the sick and dying with homeopathic medicines in her mother country of India. This institution was equipped with 75 beds, a school for training young up-and-coming homeopaths and an ambulance service. The nurses lived in a modern home behind the hospital. Records indicate that 726 patients were treated in the hospital’s last fiscal year.

A view of Bloomfield Avenue during the time that Montclair’s Homeopathic Hospital would have been in operation

There is little information available for this small hospital in Montclair, which has also been referred to as “Montclair Community Hospital.” From what we do know, it was opened in 1923 thanks to the efforts of the homeopathic laymen of Montclair and the surrounding area, who raised $15,000 for a hospital. Located near West Orange, New Jersey, this hospital had 60 beds.

Did you know that...

… In the early years of the 20th century, drug companies began producing drugs in a way that foreshadowed the mass production that would take over the food industry? Ingredients were made public, but the formulation was entirely secret and the property of the company. Medicines became clones – one-size-fits-all. The particulars of the case, the individual and the multitude of variations of how illnesses manifest, were entirely ignored and the quick-fix drug was promoted by the allopathic physician. The same formula, owned exclusively by the drug manufacturer, given to thousands of people, with total disregard for their individual suffering, nuances and needs, stands starkly opposed to the beauty of homeopathy and singularism.

WEST JERSEY HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL Camden, New Jersey

The hospital was first founded in 1885 under the name Camden Homeopathic Hospital. Three years later, it changed its location and name to the West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital.39 It was first opened for those “worthy persons unable to employ a homeopathic physician” and was meant particularly for women.40 During the last recorded fiscal year, 1,628 patients were cared for and nearly 13 times as many patients were treated in the dispensary ward for a total of 22,025 cases.

Did you know that...

…The American Medical Association’s (AMA) original purpose was to quash homeopathy? Homeopathic doctors and allopathic (conventional) doctors were at odds from the onset in the early 1800s. The history of homeopathy is a fascinating parallel to the battle of David and Goliath.

ALBANY HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL Albany, New York

This stately hospital was first incorporated in 1875 and later moved to the building pictured here in 1908. Both the main building and a nurses’ home made up the institution, which employed only homeopathic medicines. Though allopathic physicians did have consultation and other private privileges here, it was truly a homeopathic hospital that also educated at least 42 students from their adjunct school in the last reported fiscal year. The hospital was equipped with its very own ambulance service. Nearly 2,200 individuals were cared for in 100 beds during the last reported fiscal year. An impressive 13,350 cases were treated in the hospital’s dispensary department during that same year.

Of the limited information available on Bethesda Sanitarium, built within the Brooklyn Borough, we do know that it was first built just before the turn of the last century in 1884. It was a private institution with 35-40 beds. Homeopathic physicians served as visiting staff. According to reports from its last recorded fiscal year, 115 patients were treated.

… Homeopathic hospitals, medical schools and doctors in the United States were “phased” out by the 1940s? It is only now, as a result of the American public’s outcry for drugless medicine to become available, that this safe, rational, and intelligent paradigm is making a comeback in the United States.

BUFFALO HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL Buffalo, New York

Thanks to the passion and persistence of Mrs. Hoxsie, a homeopathic hospital was brought to fruition in our city of Buffalo, New York. Her husband, Dr. Augustus Hoxsie, was a successful homeopathic physician but was not allowed to work in either of Buffalo’s two hospitals back in the mid-1800s. Not ready to settle for less, Mrs. Hoxsie and other like-minded women formed the Homeopathic Hospital Association in 1872 and raised $4500 through a bazaar plus another $500 in association memberships. This was enough for them to rent a three-story house at the intersection of North Division and Washington Streets. The Buffalo Homeopathic Hospital opened that same year. Demand was so great, they purchased the Bidwell family home at 74 Cottage Street two years later. They acquired two adjoining cottages and put on a two-story addition allowing them to treat 46 patients. The demand for more homeopathic care didn’t stop there, and in 1911, the Buffalo Homeopathic Hospital opened at Gates Circle, at the junction of Linwood and Lafayette. Here they could accommodate 150 patients. The property included two nurses’ homes, a men’s home and an administration building.42 The building still stands and was most recently known as Millard Fillmore Hospital at Gates Circle.43 The hospital recently closed.

CUMBERLAND STREET HOSPITAL Brooklyn, New York

This hospital, founded in 1852, was originally called the Brooklyn Homeopathic Dispensary. Two years later, it was renamed the Brooklyn Homeopathic Hospital and then, in 1902, the Cumberland Street Hospital. By 1918, it was simply known as Cumberland Hospital.44 In 1902, it was acquired by New York City. At that time, the hospital was comprised of a main building, a secondary building serving as an ambulance garage and morgue, two rented homes for the nurses, a laboratory, and housing for female and male workers. According to the records for its last fiscal year, the hospital treated 3,126 individuals. Additionally, this hospital worked in conjunction with one of the city’s regular ambulance services and in 1915 answered 1,488 calls with the aid of 22 nurses. The dispensary ward was very busy during this year as well, treating nearly 21,000 cases. That's nearly 57 cases every day!

FLOWER HOSPITAL New York City, New York

Don’t let a name like “Flower Hospital” deceive you. Such a gentle sounding name could very well hide the powerhouse hospital that it was. Though it began in 1890 only as a surgical building, it grew with the addition of many more medical structures. These included a nurses’ home, an up-to-date ambulance garage, a dispensary and staff dormitory, an isolation building and lastly, in 1914, an impressive, six-story private and fireproof pavilion with room enough for 100 patients. Not only was it a burgeoning hospital, but it also was an essential partner to the New York Homeopathic Medical College. Making ambulance history, this hospital boasted one of the largest and best-equipped ambulance services of any homeopathic hospital at that time and is reported to have answered 5,671 calls in one year.

A whopping 4,397 inpatients and 27,417 outpatients were treated during its last recorded fiscal year.

Those who argue that homeopathic medicines are nothing more than a placebo would do well to consider that historically homeopathy has been used for individuals suffering from insanity just like those who were successfully cared for here at the Homeopathic Hospital in Collins, New York. Though allopathic drugs were not forbidden within the hospital, the staff only administered homeopathic medicines according to the principles of homeopathy. The physicians included those from Buffalo, Rochester and Attica, New York, who also taught students in the adjunct nurse’s training school. Equipped with 1,254 beds, this institution cared for 1,429 patients during the last recorded fiscal year. This hospital was rather expansive, with an administration building, two three-story pavilions, two two-story wings, a farm colony, two tuberculosis pavilions, a power house, laundry, kitchen and dining room buildings. Nurses had their own home, as did the superintendent. Housing was provided for the staff, and the grounds also included a workshop, store room and amusement hall.

HAHNEMANN HOSPITAL New York City, New York

In 1869, during the days of horse-drawn carriages, this hospital was founded and stretched across an entire block on Park Avenue in New York City. In the hospital’s original constitution, only homeopathic physicians were allowed to care for individuals in any area of the hospital. This hospital was comprised of a main building with a well-equipped wing reaching four stories high. The hospital had 132 ready beds. Additionally, there was a storehouse, morgue and a laboratory building. This hospital also worked in conjunction with a training school, educating 45 students who were provided nearby housing by the hospital. Although this hospital was managed by a homeopathic staff, it did allow allopathic physicians to treat their patients. Because their records were kept separate from each other, we have a notable comparison between the two. The mortality rate of the allopathic physicians was 10.6%, whereas those cared for by homeopathic medicines had a death rate of only 4.3%. This 4.3% death rate applies to 2,110 patients treated with homeopathic medicines! The hospital was equipped with 140 beds, two wings, public wards and an administration building. These separate areas of the hospital were contained within four three-story sections. Additionally, a training school educated 45 aspiring nurses who were taught by 10 volunteer instructors and two paid instructors.

In 1856, all medical journals refused to publish any references to homeopathy in their findings and articles. According to Faces of Homeopathy, “By the mid-1850s all state medical societies except the Massachusetts Medical Society had purged their homeopathic members. In 1856, the American Medical Association resolved that homeopathic works should henceforth no longer be discussed or reviewed in allopathic periodicals. After this, there was no formal communication whatever between the two branches of the profession; allopaths were forbidden to consult with homeopathic physicians or to patronize their pharmacies.”46

LAURA FRANKLIN FREE HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN

New York City, New York

This children’s hospital boasted a sterling success, never surpassed by a lower death rate or a higher efficiency. Established in 1886, its board was made up only of members of the Homeopathic Medical Society of the County of New York. Homeopathy, therefore, was the only method of treatment – a fine method indeed. Records show that 1,234 children were cared for in its last fiscal year! Not only were hundreds of children provided with safe and effective care, but the hospital was also financially efficient — a daily average of 74 children at a per capita cost of 55 cents.

HOSPITAL OF THE PROTESTANT HALF- ORPHAN ASYLUM

New York, New York

The large brick building pictured here was a children’s asylum; a nearby hospital treated these little ones exclusively with homeopathic medicines. What a beautiful way to care for children! We know that this hospital was founded in 1835 and stood at 67 West 10th Street in Manhattan.50 This asylum later moved just west of Central Park at Manhattan Avenue and 104th Street. At the opening reception for the asylum’s new location, 200 guests met the 200 “bright-faced” boys and girls between the ages of 3-14 who were cared for within this institution. “All boys’ heads had been newly barbered, and the girls wore bits of ribbon or lace about their throats and in their sleeves.”51 This must have been a festive event indeed, and one can imagine that these children were brimming with vibrant health thanks to the care of careful physicians and gentle homeopathy. The hospital was equipped with 18 beds.

ROCHESTER HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL Rochester, New York

This institution was founded in 1887 and opened for operation two years later. It was not only a hospital but a school – the Homeopathic Hospital School of Nursing. It opened for residents on the east side of town looking for an alternative to the city hospital. The city hospital is now known as Rochester General Hospital. The Homeopathic Hospital School of Nursing changed its name to the Genesee Hospital in 1926.52 The institution was made up of a main administration building with two wings, a maternity ward and a nurses’ home. The hospital trained up to 51 pupils in one year, and the school and training school complemented each other very well. Equipped with 139 beds, the hospital cared for 2,836 individuals. The ambulance service was busy within Rochester as well, answering 1,354 calls. The dispensary ward cared for 8,267 individuals.

YONKERS HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL Yonkers, New York

It is truly remarkable what like-minded, motivated individuals can do together. Thanks to the efforts of progressive and smart women (the number of whom never exceeded 12), combined with the work of Yonkers’ homeopathic community, this institution should be proud of its great accomplishments within a short 20-year time span. First founded in 1896, this modern hospital was well endowed and had a fireproof structure, 30 beds, and two buildings for nurses’ housing. It was staffed by eight homeopathic physicians.53 Among them, they treated 1,678 patients Like so many other homeopathic hospitals from the turn of the last century, the Yonkers Homeopathic Hospital also provided a training school for at least 18 students annually, all of whom were taught by the nurses and homeopathic physicians.

CHILDREN'S HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

This children’s hospital was founded by the Hahnemann Club of Philadelphia in 1877 and moved to a better location just six years later in 1883.58 Within one year, 2,262 individuals (both children and their mothers) were cared for by a homeopathic staff. The dispensary took 10,903 cases within that same year. The hospital had188 beds as well as a school, where hospital staff educated up to 36 students. An ambulance service provided quick transport for the emergency cases. Consisting of the main hospital building, a nurses’ home, maternity ward, laundry and isolation building, this institution was a fine contributor and provider to the health of those living within the City of Brotherly Love.

EASTON SANITARIUM Easton, Pennsylvania

The Easton Sanitarium opened in 1895 as a private sanitarium for the treatment of mental and nervous disease. This cottage-like institution was situated on 16 acres in Easton, Pennsylvania, adjacent to Nevin Park. In 1914, its capacity was 33 patients. Consisting of three buildings, the sanitarium represented three centuries: the first building was built during the late 18th century, the second and main building were built and remodeled during the 19th century, and the bungalow reached completion at the turn of the last century. With a 1:1 ratio, each patient was cared for by one nurse at all times. The sanatorium’s garden provided the patients with fresh fruits and vegetables, which were consumed along with raw milk and fresh eggs.62

HAHNEMANN HOSPITAL Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Hahnemann University Hospital, then and now

This is a hospital that goes by many names: Homeopathic Hospital of the Hahnemann Medical College Philadelphia, Hahnemann University Hospital, and simply Hahnemann Hospital. It first opened in 1850 and employed homeopathic medicines as its method of treatment up until 1959 when the college discontinued homeopathic training. During its homeopathic years, this hospital played an integral role in the education of Philadelphia’s medical students. The hospital itself was equipped with 306 beds and treated up to 4,132 patients during just one year, while the dispensary department treated 15,000 patients. A substantial visiting staff from Philadelphia’s Medical College oversaw the care of the patients. A busy place indeed – more than 5,000 accident cases were treated per year, no doubt keeping the ambulance service on its toes! The institution was comprised of a main building, a nurses’ home, laundry, power house and a women’s building used only for maternity and gynecological cases. This hospital is still in operation as the Hahnemann University Hospital but no longer employs homeopathy. It is a thriving medical and academic institution, providing care for 500 beds and services to its graduate students.

HOMEOPATHIC STATE HOSPITAL FOR THE INSANE

Allentown, Pennsylvania

Beds, 1,000. Number of patients treated during last fiscal year, 1,166. Number on A group of 12 from the Germantown Homeopathic Medical Society of Philadelphia pushed for state legislation that would provide both the selection of a site and construction of a homeopathic hospital dedicated to the care of the insane. Although their first attempts were unfruitful, the bill was finally passed in June of 1901. The provisions of the legislation helped this hospital materialize. It first opened in 1912 and was equipped with 1,429 beds. Thirty-five years later, this hospital cared for up to 1,966 individuals in 1947 alone. Its staff and management were solely homeopathic, and the hospital was comprised of many buildings, three of which were devoted to administration. There were two chapels, four ward buildings, an operating room, a laundry, a dining hall, an auditorium, ice and cold storage facilities, and separate buildings to house the boiler and electric plant. It was a totally self-contained facility. 65

HOSPITAL OF THE WOMEN'S HOMEOPATHIC ASSOCIATION

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

It’s no wonder that this institution is called by its nickname, the “Hospital of the Women’s Homeopathic Association.” Otherwise you’d be calling it by its rather lengthy, laborious name, “Medical, Surgical and Maternity Hospitals of the Women’s Homeopathic Association of Pennsylvania.” Whew! The hospital opened in 1882 with an addition in 1887. The entire institution was under the supervision and management of homeopathic physicians and staff, and no other means of treatment was permitted. The hospital’s services included ambulances and a training school for up to 25 nursing students. A dispensary ward working in connection with the hospital took 16,577 cases in one year. Within the hospital itself, 1,721 individuals were treated during the last recorded fiscal year.

LINDEN SANATORIUM Doylestown, Pennsylvania

Just slightly southwest of New York City, this small institution first opened its healing doors on March 15, 1916, and within six months, provided care to 15 people. Just one homeopathic physician served on the house staff. It is unknown how long this homeopathic sanatorium was in operation. Yet however small the numbers, we know that homeopathy brought healing to at least 15 people. I wonder if those who were healed and cured spread the word of homeopathy throughout their little area of eastern Pennsylvania.

PHILADELPHIA HOME FOR INFANTS Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

.

Founded in 1873, this hospital stood at 4618 Westminster Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in what is now a simple residential area in the city. While open, its purpose was the “caring for infants who are too young to be admitted into other institutions.” Infants and toddlers received care, attention and board up until the age of 3 or 4, when others might take over their supervision and care. If little ones had lost their mothers, their fathers were welcome to bring them here for attention.67 The home had 52 beds and within one year, 95 infants and toddlers were treated.

PITTSBURGH HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Located in what was described as a “desirable area of the city,” this hospital was established in 1866. Its facilities were made up of the main building, laboratory building, the nurses’ home and the engine and laundry building. In addition, it boasted an auto-ambulance service, something we no doubt take for granted in our modern society! It also provided training to some 53 pupils in one year in their school, which was staffed by the hospital’s own physicians. Always full to its capacity, it was a popular hospital during its day. Having 182 beds, it treated nearly 3,300 patients during its last recorded fiscal year. During that same year, the outpatient department was also quite busy, treating 14,248 cases.

The Florence Crittenton Home was named after the daughter of New York drug maker Charles N. Crittenton. Florence died from scarlet fever in 1882 at the age of 4. Charles founded the first Florence Crittenton Home in New York for “erring and wayward” women and eventually opened 64 homes across the nation.73

Beginning in 1910 at this Utah facility, homeopathic care was administered to patients in eight beds. The hospital treated 14 patients during its last reported fiscal year.

HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITALS ACROSS

THE WORLD TODAY

HOMEOPATHY IN INDIA After reading about the dozens of homeopathic hospitals detailed in this book, you might be asking where the current homeopathic hospitals are. Let’s face it; it’s not likely that you’ll find one. By and large, such institutions are very uncommon here in the United States.

However, they thrive and flourish in India, where the widespread use of homeopathy might only be matched in abundance by their savory curries. There, hospitals, clinics, and schools abound.

Thanks to the generosity of Thiru V.K. Arumugam, who was healed by homeopathy, a trust fund was established for the homeopathic treatment of the impoverished. This led to the opening of the Venkateswara Homeopathic College in 2000. It continues to facilitate research and the promulgation of homeopathy. This college provides many departments for aspiring homeopaths who are taught and trained in microbiology, physiology, pathology, biochemistry and forensics. Available to them is a vast library and, of course, a hospital that sees at least 200 patients on a daily basis between the inpatient and outpatient departments. Within these departments, students are able to put their education into practice. This hospital has 50 beds and boasts of having modern facilities and equipment.

Homeopathy in Germany

In homeopathy’s homeland of Germany, homeopathy can be professionally practiced by either a medical doctor or by those called a “Heilpraktiker.” Such persons are allowed to use alternative treatments for most diseases and can indicate and advertise that they practice homeopathy. Additionally, three homeopathic hospitals are recognized in Germany. These are the Robert-Bosch-Krankenhaus in Stuttgart, the Waldhausklinik in Augsburg and the Harlachinger Krankenhaus, located in Munich, Bavaria.

These three hospitals generally use complexes and low potency organopathic (organ specific) remedies. Some MDs at Harlachinger Krankenhaus prescribe classical homeopathy under the supervision of Rajan Sankaran.74

Homeopathy in Great Britain

Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital Glasgow, Scotland

Beginning in 1849 and continuing up until the present, the Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital has provided consistent homeopathic treatment to its patients. It has seen many relocations and renovations, the most recent of which is underway and will result in a beautiful, modern facility, complete with art installations and a garden. Healing will be brought about primarily by the use of homeopathic medicines but will be greatly supported by the serene environment. It currently has 15 beds and is reported to have treated 1,000 patients annually. The National Health Service (NHS) of Scotland refers hundreds of patients to this hospital.

Royal London Hospital for Integrative Medicine London, England

First founded in the mid 19th century, this hospital was previously known as the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital. It is affiliated with the University College London Homeopathic NHS Foundation Trust. The NHS (National Health Service) of England sends thousands of its patients to this hospital where they can choose among many alternative medicinal treatments for a variety

of illnesses and conditions. The building was funded solely by homeopaths without any public funding. Each year, the NHS refers 27,000 patients to this hospital.

Homeopathy in France

Hôpital Saint-Jacques Paris, France

Situated in the City of Love, this hospital was first built in 1871, thanks to public funding. After its founding, it moved to a new location, where it is currently operating. This hospital was first comprised of two wings and an administration building. It now functions as a private institution providing care from both homeopathic

specialists and general practitioners who incorporate allopathic treatments in a newly renovated, modern hospital setting. The three main methods of treatment are homeopathy, acupuncture and auriculotherapy (stimulation of the auricle of the ear).

One of the great goals of this facility is education, so it is affiliated with many homeopathic schools in France and throughout the world.

75 The American Institute of Homeopathy (AIH)

101 S. Whiting Street, Suite 16 Alexandria, Virginia 22304

Located in Alexandria, Virginia, the American Institute of Homeopathy (AIH) was founded on April 10, 1844. Even though homeopathy had only just arrived in America 19 years prior to the AIH’s foundation, the AIH already had its work cut out for it – homeopathy was under attack.

Because homeopathy was so prevalent in the 19th century United States, many people saw it as a lucrative profession, but they were not qualified or certified to practice as homeopathic doctors. Therefore, there were a great number of “pretenders,” that is, people posing as homeopaths who actually didn’t have the credentials at all. The AIH strove to purify the ranks of homeopathic doctors and separate the wheat from the chaff. Additionally, one of the first goals of the AIH was to edit and add information to the Materia Medica, a large and extensive book detailing hundreds of homeopathic remedies and their healing symptoms.

To this day, the American Institute of Homeopathy operates as a trade association for doctors, physicians, dentists and nurses – all of whom espouse and practice homeopathy. It continues to promote and safeguard homeopathy and those who practice it professionally.

Council for Homeopathic Certification

PMB 187 16915 SE 272nd Street

Suite #100 Covington, WA 98042

While the Council for Homeopathic Certification might seem too far-reaching and irrelevant for a book such as this, it is actually fitting. This organization serves as a very useful and reliable guide for the beginner in homeopathy or anyone seeking a classically trained homeopath. Such homeopaths must meet the requirements and successfully pass examinations proffered by the CHC. Requirements are rigorous. They include proof of completed college and post-graduate schooling in homeopathy, member recommendations, a minimum of five years clinical experience with notarized confirmation letters, professional references, written and oral exams, essays, written proof of cases and peer review.

First founded in 1991, the CHC provides a unified national standard for homeopaths practicing throughout the United States and Canada. Visit their website, www.homeopathicdirectory.com, to better understand just how serious and legitimate the practice of homeopathy is taken by the Council and how it should be esteemed as both a viable and legitimate alternative health care practice throughout the United States.

Those homeopaths who have been certified by the Council can add the abbreviation CCH after their names. This stands for “Certified Classical Homeopath,” a title granted by the Council for Homeopathic Certification (CHC). Joette Calabrese is an accredited member of this organization.

North American Society of Homeopaths

PO BOX 450039 Sunrise, FL 33345-0039

As a relatively new organization, the North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH), maintains a high level of excellence for homeopathic practitioners nationwide. Annually, its members must meet set standards and requirements. The requirements include proof of education and adherence to the rules and ethics of practice as well as ongoing yearly professional training requirements.

What this means then, for anyone seeking a good, credentialed homeopath, is that the North American Society will help you locate one in whom you can trust!

Not only does NASH maintain lists and promote homeopathic practitioners, it also strives to protect homeopaths by advocating for their legal rights and enabling them to practice as professional alternative health practitioners without any unnecessary cumbrances.

Their website, www.homeopathy.org, keeps you posted on the latest news and events in the world of homeopathy and provides directories to help locate homeopathic teachers, mentors, schools and, of course, practitioners. Along with these reliable resources, the site also shares many great articles in their online library.

Joette Calabrese is a member of NASH, and this is indicated by the letters RSHom (Na) following her name. It stands for “Registered Member of the North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH).”

Closing Thoughts

Ah, history – dates, names, figures, facts. They can all be a bit dull when they don’t mean anything to us, wouldn’t you agree? Though this little history book doesn’t give each and every hospital pictured here the full credit that it deserves, maybe it can at least give you a taste of homeopathy’s presence in the United States. Or perhaps, better put, the far-reaching presence that homeopathy once had here. Although these hospitals no longer practice homeopathy, this is not saying that homeopathy is an antiquated form of medicine. It’s not just a ghost from the past or a whisper from a dusty history book. Homeopathy is alive and well and making a marked resurgence in this country and throughout the world. And what’s more, it continues to heal! Information for some of the many American homeopathic hospitals was simply unavailable or scant at best. Photographs were not always readily available because these hospital records were not preserved in many of the towns’ historical archives. In some cases, where homeopathic hospitals once stood, renovated modern medical facilities now answer for the health care needs of their communities. But no matter! Whether it is the 18th, 19th, 20th or even 30th century, homeopathy’s presence may have fluctuated, but it is not a passing fad or fancy. Efficacy, reliability, safety and success are attributes that belong to the history of homeopathy, whatever the century. Homeopathy is a vibrant medicine that continues to survive despite the onslaught of the AMA, the media and government. Though we no longer have homeopathic hospitals to which we can bring our injured child or our aging loved ones, we can rely on the wisdom and guidance of our licensed homeopathic consultants. We should also look to our own abilities as lay amateur homeopaths. Your home is your hospital. Your resolve to use homeopathy, and your faith in its efficacy will not only bring restorative health to whomever it touches, but it will help lay the cornerstone of homeopathy’s well-deserved place within our societies. Clearly, due to the vast popularity and far-reaching influence of conventional and allopathic medicine both in the United States and worldwide, the existence of purely homeopathic hospitals is generally few and far between.

What does exist and thrive are the schools and colleges dedicated to homeopathic training and formation. There are too many to name in this little booklet. These can be found in North America, South America, Europe and throughout India. They are beginning to appear in Japan as well.

Though the graduates may not have a hospital ready to accept them, they are practicing homeopathy as consultants with private practices or in collaboration with offices that offer other alternative medicines, such as chiropractors and naturopaths.

So, although homeopathic hospitals are a thing of the past (at least in the United States), homeopathy has not been obliterated! Homeopathic consultants and enthusiasts take advantage of our latest technologies to bring the classic and historic medicine to the present because it continues to heal, restore and rejuvenate.

Homeopathy continues to be practiced, continues to be taught and continues to work.
