Strategy acceleration from the inside out

 NeuroBusiness  Group   2

NBG’s  Link-‐n-‐Lock  Strategy  ensures  that  we  use  our  proprietary  iPad  application  to  link  human  capital  development  with  the  company  strategy.  All  coaching  and  training  is  delivered  within  this  context.

What  is  NBG?    NeuroBusiness  Group  (NBG)  is  invested  in  human  capital  development  with  several  disruptive  innovations  that  are  game-‐changing:  link-‐n-‐lock,  BTL  (built  to  last),  and  brainstorming.

How  do  we  work?  Together  with  our  EVP  of  Sustainable  Learning,  we  have  developed  a  proprietary  tool  that  focuses  on  product  design  based  on  desired  business  impact  and  ROI.    Then,  we  deliver  these  projects  within  the  context  of  the  current  business  strategy  and,  after  delivery,  follow-‐up  to  make  sure  that  you  have  not  just  paid  for  a  sensation  or  good  feeling  that  disappears  soon  after  we  leave.

What  is  link-‐n-‐lock?    First,  we  measure  where  you  are  with  your  strategic  goals  to  optimize  the  possibility  of  acceleration.    With  our  screening  assessment  tools  we  are  able  to  back-‐cast  four  categories  of  desired  change:  state  of  mind  (e.g.  stress  and  anxiety),  behavior  (e.g.  procrastination  and  poor  communication),

People   Strategy

 NeuroBusiness  Group   3

Brain  science  offers  several  advantages  when  combined  with  organizational  psychology  –  for  one,  it  offers  a  perspective  on  the  unconscious  and  what  to  do  about  this

organizational  structural  change  (e.g.  alignment  and  teamwork)  and  financial  goals  (e.g.  margins  or  growth).

Then,  we  determine  where  you  want  to  be  on  one  or  more  of  the  above  dimensions.    Based  on  the  results,  our  software  calculates  a  graph  that  can  be  viewed  in  short-‐term  or  long-‐term  scales.    We  then  select  among  our  myriad  developed  coaching  and  training  programs  to  customize  a  program  for  you.  The  result  is  a  best-‐fit  program  that  matches  your  needs.    In  this  way,  human  capital  development  is  always  linked  and  locked  to  strategy.

Why  brain  science?    When  business  leaders  hear  about  brain  science,  their  response  is  often  quizzical.    Is  this  some  academic  theory  or  something  that  really  relates  to  strategy?    NBG’s  approach  is  based  on  the  following  principles:

Who  devises  and  executes  on  strategy?  People

What  directs  people  eventually?  Their  brains

But  isn’t  it  enough  to  simply  observe  their  behavior?  No…and  here  is  why  brain  science  can  be  helpful.

Daniel  Kahneman  The  brain’s  scientists  are  the  wave  of  the  future  in  the  financial  world.  You’d  better  pay  very  serious  attention  to  them.

 NeuroBusiness  Group   4

Human  capital  development  needs  to  make  an  impact  on  business.    When  developed,  the  eventual  goal  is  to  make  more  money  regardless  of  what  your  initial  intention  is.

Re-‐packaging:  Difficult-‐to-‐digest  ideas  are  easier  to  understand

Image-‐based  learning:  It’s  often  easier  to  remember  pictures  than  words

Environmentally  matched  language:    Scientists,  pharmaceutical  companies,  and  engineers,  for  example,  respond  to  the  metaphors  of  science  and  language.

Unconscious  factors  are  understood:  Since  only  30%  of  business  strategies  are  successfully  executed,  we  introduce  you  to  the  unconscious  factors  impacting  human  performance  and  methods  to  address  this

Brain-‐based  strategies:  Why  institute  interventions  for  which  the  brain  is  not  wired?

Research-‐based:  All  of  the  interventions  are  derived  from  extensive  research  on  brain  imaging

What  are  some  examples  of  unique  insights?  We  have  more  than  20  different  workshops  and  paradigms  that  form  the  basis  of  our  customized  programs.    Below  is  a  selection  of  some  of  the  unique  insights  that  brain  science  can  offer:

1. Empathy  is  an  essential  part  of  social  intelligence  that  has  been  shown  to  impact  productivity  significantly.  Is  all  empathy  the  same?

No.    Studies  show  that  cognitive  empathy  is  superior  to  emotional  empathy  in  negotiations  and  more  likely  to  lead  to  a  successful  outcome.    By  understanding  the  brain-‐based  differences  between  cognitive  and  emotional  empathy  NBG  can  teach  leaders  and  managers  how  to  employ  this  technique  to  enhance  employee  productivity  and  motivation.

2. When  productivity  is  down  but  employees  appear  to  be  calm  and  satisfied,  why  might  their  concentration  and  focus  still  be  affected?

Brain  science  teaches  us  that  fear  and  anxiety  may  be  totally  outside  of  conscious  awareness  but  still  over-‐activate  the  brain’s  fear  center.    This  causes  brain  fatigue  without  even  being  aware  of  this  as  well  as  disruption  of  focus.    NBG  can  explain  why  this  happens  and  what  to  do  about  this  based  on  evidence  from  brain  science.    In  fact,  through  high  experiential  workshops  we  can  walk  people  through  some  evidence-‐based  techniques  to  decrease  the  sabotage  of  unconscious  factors.

 NeuroBusiness  Group   5

Brain  science  teaches  us  not  just  why  things  happen  but  how  we  can  devise  the  most  efficient  strategies  that  are  in  sync  with  how  the  brain  works.    It  matters  when  you  leverage  what  the  brain  already  knows  how  to  do.

3. Are  creativity  and  innovation  inherited  and  can  you  enhance  this  within  the  company?

They  are  partly  inherited.  But  by  understanding  how  the  brains  of  innovative  and  creative  people  work,  NBG  has  designed  a  teachable  program  to  enhance  creativity  and  innovation.

4. Why  do  people  have  such  difficulty  at  times  of  change  and  what  can  we  do  about  this?

Change  causes  brain  chaos.  The  term  for  this  is  cognitive  dissonance.  To  truly  change,  you  have  to  pay  a  price  called  “switch  cost”  which  is  the  price  of  giving  up  old  ways  and  familiarity  as  well  as  mastery  for  new,  unknown  but  important  ways  to  change.  People  have  a  difficult  time  doing  this.  Brain  science  can  teach  us  how  to  leverage  brain  function  to  pay  switch  cost  and  measure  effectiveness  over  time.

5. Why  is  it  more  difficult  to  lead  when  the  stakes  are  high  and  what  can  you  do  about  this?

Studies  show  that  even  natural  born  leaders  are  prone  to  limiting  themselves  due  to  a  fear  of  success.  Brain  science  helps  us  understand  this  fear  and  how  to  overcome  it.

Carl  Sagan

At  the  heart  of  science  is  an  essential  balance  between  two  seemingly  contradictory  attitudes:  an  openness  to  new  ideas,  no  matter  how  bizarre  or  counterintuitive  they  may  be,  and  the  most  ruthless,  skeptical  scrutiny  of  all  ideas,  old  and  new.  This  is  how  deep  truths  are  winnowed  from  deep  nonsense.

 NeuroBusiness  Group   6

It  doesn’t  matter  how  spectacular  or  famous  your  trainers  and  coaches  are.    What  matters  is  that  the  programs  that  are  built  are  built  to  last  and  when  they  do  not  last,  you  know  this  sooner  rather  than  later.

What  is  the  NBG  “built-‐to-‐last”  strategy?    NBG  offers  you  the  ability  to  make  your  investment  in  training  and  development  last.    Aside  from  our  teaching  methods,  which  are  based  on  how  the  brain  best  retains  information  (all  NBG-‐Certified  coaches  are  taught  to  train  in  this  way),  NBG  also  offers  several  options  for  making  sure  that  interventions  last.    Here  is  some  of  what  we  do:

1. All  our  programs  are  designed  to  ensure  changes  in  pre-‐and  post-‐training  in  conceptual  knowledge  as  well  as  actionable  knowledge.  We  measure  this  directly  after  the  programs.  In  addition,  studies  are  underway  to  examine  these  changes  at  3,  6,  9,  and  12  months.

2. All  our  workshops  are  designed  to  measure  changes  desired  by  the  organization  with  a  complimentary  6-‐month  check-‐in  and  “booster”  program  to  ensure  that  you  are  on  track.

3. We  offer  the  ability  to  follow-‐up  using  cost-‐savings  online  methodologies  that  are  combined  with  minimal  coaching  where  necessary.    This  helps  to  ensure  that  the  messages  we  shared  are  stored  in  long-‐term  memory  and  can  be  used  when  necessary.

4. We  are  also  developing  proprietary  apps  that  can  help  with  ongoing  tracking  and  cementing  of  information  that  is  learned.

5. Our  iPad-‐delivered  modular  coaching  technique  ensures  that  any  coaching  concepts  that  we  deliver  to  you  are  on  a  database  that  you  can  access  at  any  time.    It  also  ensures  that  we  design  only  what  you  need  and  need  to  remember.    Also,  you  have  images  to  remember.

A  broad  margin  of  leisure  is  as  beautiful  in  a  man's  life  as  in  a  book.  Haste  makes  waste  no  less  in  life  than  in  housekeeping.  Keep  the  time,  observe  the  hours  of  the  universe,  not  of  the  cars.

We  use  the  brain  as  the  basis  for  learning  but  recognize  that  thoughts  and  emotions  both  need  to  be  considered  when  focusing  on  human  development.    The  human  spirit  also  deserves  some  consideration.

High  Stakes  Leadership

When  the  stakes  are  high,  the  brain  does  not  behave  the  way  you  want  it  to  or  think  it  does;  it  does  completely  counterintuitive  things.  A  recent  study  in  the  Harvard  Business  Review  emphasized  why  good  leaders  make  bad  decisions.    Brain  science  explains  why  and  then  what  to  do  about  this.

Leading  Change

There  is  a  difference  between  what  is  unchangeable  and  what  is  difficult  to  change.    NBG  has  identified  brain  regions  that  are  capable  of  change  and  teach  proprietary  methodologies  to  enhance  commitment  to  new  ideas,  help  deal  with  switch  costs,  and  sustain  change  in  the  face  of  volatility.

Enhancing  Employee  Motivation

Carrot  and  stick  methods  of  leadership  do  work  (who  doesn’t  love  bonuses?)  but,  alone,  they  are  highly  ineffective  if  not  combined  with  transformational  constructs.    NBG  teaches  brain-‐based  transformational  leadership,  how  to  execute  on  this,  and  how  to  know  when  intrinsic  and  extrinsic  motivation  is  necessary.

 Team  Alignment

Teams  sometimes  work  and  sometimes  don’t.    What  determines  optimal  collective  intelligence  and  how  can  you  leverage  the  brain  to  help  with  this?  NBG  teaches  brain-‐based  perspectives  on  how  teams  can  function  most  effectively  in  a  highly  experiential  way.

What  are  some  of  the  topics  we  can  address?    These  topics  below  will  sound  familiar  but  our  approach  is  not.    Based  on  a  proprietary  and  unique  set  of  training  and  coaching  methods,  each  workshop  is  tailored  to  suit  the  needs  of  your  organization.

 NeuroBusiness  Group   8

Enhancing  Organizational  Agility

To  be  agile  in  the  face  of  uncertainty  and  anxiety  is  crucial  in  today’s  business  environment.    How  do  we  achieve  this  by  leveraging  how  the  brain  works  and  more  importantly,  how  do  you  maintain  this?  NBG  has  developed  a  proprietary  methodology  to  enhance  organizational  agility.

Enhancing  Innovation

The  brain  has  very  specific  ways  in  which  it  can  enhance  innovation.  Through  a  process  known  as  analogical  reasoning,  new  innovations  are  more  likely  to  occur.    NBG  teaches  these  and  other  methods  to  enhance  innovation  within  your  company.

Dealing  with  burnout

NBG  has  a  program  based  on  its  apps  that  can  help  companies  identify  burnout  early  and  make  interventions  while  tracking  improvement.  Many  people  do  not  recognize  that  burnout  occurs  in  stages  and  that.  with  brain-‐based  methodologies,  we  can  prevent  progression  and  the  disastrous  effects  on  companies.

Conscious  capitalism

The  business  literature  is  increasingly  identifying  how  high-‐trust  companies  increase  their  company  returns  9-‐fold  or  how  emotional  intelligence  combined  with  transformational  leadership  can  enhance  productivity  and  profits.  NBG  takes  these  soft  variables  and  explains  how  brain  science  supports  the  connection  between  inspired  companies  and  their  financial  success.

Custom  programs

You  tell  us  your  program  needs  and  we  will  design  this  for  you.    You  want  your  company  to  make  better  decisions?  We  can  help  with  this.    You  want  to  develop  a  new  pipeline  but  can’t  figure  out  how?  We  can  help  with  this.  You  want  to  make  more  accurate  investments?  We  can  teach  you  how.    It  takes  more  than  list-‐making  to  change.    And  no  two  companies  needs  are  alike.

 NeuroBusiness  Group   9

Technology  without  humans  is  useless.    And  humans  without  technology  cannot  survive  in  today’s  business  environment.    Both  must  come  together  in  the  most  intelligent  ways  to  ensure  business  success.

What  are  some  of  the  technological  advances  NBG  can  offer?  We  offer  the  following  technological  advances  over  existing  coaching  methodologies:

1. iPad-‐driven  coaching:    Regardless  of  what  computer  interface  you  use,  our  iPad-‐driven,  web-‐based  coaching  methodologies  will  ensure  seamless  communication,  assessment,  and  storage  of  vital  concepts  with  the  ability  to  revisit  at  any  time,  as  well  as  image-‐based  learning.

2. Burnout  Mate:  Our  proprietary  app  will  help  you  determine  your  burnout  score,  stage  and  cause  as  well  as  what  to  do  about  this.  Furthermore,  you  can  track  your  burnout  over  time.

3. SalesPrep:  We  are  near-‐completion  of  our  first  sales  app  that  helps  salespeople  think  of  what  is  relevant  just  before  a  sale  based  on  brain  science.

4. NBG  BTL-‐1:  This  is  a  program  that  allows  us  to  take  what  we  customize  for  you  and  develop  the  capacity  for  online  follow-‐up.

Intelligence:  NBG  is  at  the  forefront  of  coaching  intelligence.

Life  Unlocked:  7  Revolutionary  Lessons  to  Overcome  Fear  (Rodale,  2010)  Written  by  the  founder  of  NBG’s  methodologies,  this  book  was  voted  “Motivational  Book  of  the  Year”  by  the  prestigious  “Books  for  a  Better  Life”  competition.  In  addition,  Men’s  Health  voted  this  book  one  of  the  top  health  books  for  2010.    Based  on  the  brain  science  of  fear,  anxiety,  volatility,  risk  and  uncertainty,  this  book  describes  how  to  use  brain  science  in  everyday  life  to  combat  these  brain-‐based  phenomena  that  disrupt  everyday  personal  and  business  life.

Your  Brain  and  Business:  The  Neuroscience  of  Great  Leaders  (Financial  Times  Press,  2011)  Peer-‐reviewed  by  Wharton  Business  School,  this  book  describes  some  of  the  basic  concepts  upon  which  NBG  workshops  and  training  are  built.    Although  the  workshops  and  trainings  themselves  are  highly  experiential,  this  book  describes  the  theory  behind  them.    Highly  acclaimed  by  leaders  at  multinational  companies,  this  book  has  been  touted  as  being  the  “go-‐to  book”  to  more  deeply  understand  how  the  brain  impacts  your  business.

The  NBG  website  describes  some  of  our  other  initiatives  (white  papers,  studies,  connections  with  33voices,  and  online  polling)  that  help  make  information  more  contemporary  and  less  archaic.
