A Be!er World by Design is excited to share with you details about our

upcoming conference, bringing together over 1,000 entrepreneurs, academics, and innovators

to explore the power of design, appropriate technology, and business strategies to improve

our world. Conceived and organized entirely by students from Brown University and the Rhode

Island School of Design, our conference is now in its fourth year, and is continuing to expand its

impact on our a!endees and our world.

A Be!er World by Design is an immersive experience that will take you away from the

convention center and into the community. The conference unites students and professionals

under a spirit of passion and innovation that reinvigorates our a!endees and consistently

changes the way they look at the world.

Included in this kit are highlights from past conferences, what to expect from this one, and

reasons why partnering with our conference is a great opportunity. For more up-to-date

information about the 2011 conference please visit our website at:

Speaker sessions anchor the

conference, uniting the vast majority of

attendees in one space and providing

a common ground of ideas on which

everyone in the Better World community

can build. By bringing in leaders and

acolytes from their respective fields, the

conference aims to present a variety of

expert perspectives that spark dialogue

throughout the conference and inspire

action long after the conference weekend

comes to a close. After the speaker

sessions, the presenters will be found

interacting with attendees in the lobby,

which is always bustling with ideas sparked

by the previous session. Featured here are

some of our past speakers.

PANELS

PAGE 11

Page 12: A Better World by Design sponsor kit 2011

Panels bring together experts and

professionals from a variety of perspectives

to discuss a common theme, challenge, or

goal. By presenting multiple points of view,

panels give a!endees the opportunity to

weigh various aspects of the topic and spark

ideas or conversations that carry over to

other parts of the conference. Many panels

emphasize discussions and collaboration

between panelists and a!endees, expanding

the interactive aspect of the conference.

In the past, representatives from partner

organizations have participated in these

panels, increasing their visibility and

maximizing their firm’s takeaways from the

conference.

Workshops take the energy of the

speaker and panel sessions and channel it

into even more interactive programs for

a!endees. They provide opportunities for

hands-on learning as well as for a!endees

to collaborate with each other, speakers,

panelists, and other presenters. This year,

we are hoping to partner with organizations

that are interested in engaging a small group

of a!endees to apply their diverse back-

grounds and knowledge bases to a problem

they would like to have solved in a sponsored

workshop.

DESIGN EXPO

A Be!er World By Design

2010 included the first Design Expo, a

central forum for trade professionals,

students, conference presenters, and

passionate individuals to circulate their

ideas. The Expo promoted conversation,

stimulated ideas, and brought together

a diverse network for professionals and

newcomers hoping to set projects in motion.

This high energy portion of the conference

is an ideal place for partner organizations to

showcase innovative projects and connect

with interested, enthusiastic, and talented

community members.

SOCIAL MIXERS

PAGE 23

Page 24: A Better World by Design sponsor kit 2011

Nightly social events provide

a place for a!endees to unwind, process

the ideas of the day, and connect with other

passionate innovators in a more casual

environment. Here, amid live music, organic

mixology, artist demonstrations, and local

food tastings, a!endees frequently make

friendships and connections that last

through to next year’s conference. The

social events are more intimate and relaxed

than other portions of the conference,

and so provide a fun an unique se!ing for

advertisements and announcements from

partner organizations.

BETTER WORLD CHALLENGE

PAGE 27

Page 28: A Better World by Design sponsor kit 2011

Throughout the year, a!endees

remain engaged in the Be!er World

community, in part by participating in

the Be!er World Challenge. The design

competition aims to inspire innovators from

multidisciplinary backgrounds to solve a

tangible problem, and highlights some of the

most talented members of our community.

In 2010, A Be!er World Design solicited

proposals to address the problem of urban

food deserts and partnered with the City

of Providence to implement the winning

proposal.

Page 29: A Better World by Design sponsor kit 2011

In 2010, the winner of the Better World Challenge proposed a bus loop to connect food deserts to grocery stores and local shops. The system provides efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective access to nutrition.

ExposureLast year, A Be!er World by Design

a!racted over 1,000 a!endees, twice as

many as the year before and had a dedicated

online following of over 5,000. In 2011, we

expect the conference to grow even further,

reaching a larger and more diverse following

than ever before by engaging the community

and expanding our web presence to give

even more people access to the speakers

and panelists we host.

Our a!endees are, by mere virtue of being at

the conference, interested in new products

and ideas. Overwhelmingly young and

extremely diverse, they share a passion for

improving the world not captured completely

at any other event. They hail from all across

the northeast, and in some cases travel

across the country and even across the world

to be a part of A Be!er World by Design.
