The day Edgar Allan Poe was found, was also election day. Edgar Allan Poe was found laying in the streets near Ryan’s Fourth Ward Polls, which is both a place for voting and a bar. It is said that in Baltimore, there are series of occasions where gangs would take people hostage and force them to vote more than once for the politician in which the gang favored. The victims would be held in a small room, otherwise known as a “coop”, and they would be beaten and given liquor. Additionally, the victim’s clothing would be changed. This Cooping Theory was offered publicly by John R. Thompson in the 1870s. Since Edgar Allan Poe already had a weak heart caused by drinking, he would have never survived this cruelty. The only problem is that Edgar Allan Poe was so well known that he would be recognized.

COOPING THEORY

Well how did he die?

The Cooping Theory seems to be more

reliable.  1. Edgar Allan Poe was found on the street in

someone’s clothing and not his own.2. Edgar Allan Poe’s fame allowed him to be

recognized, but if he was beaten enough or had his face covered, his appearance would change.

3. Due to the harsh treatment, Edgar Allan Poe’s heart condition would be too vulnerable to withstand this cruelty.
