Walter Mosley

The Gift of Fire / On the Head of a Pin

The bestselling author delivers two speculative tales, in one volume, of everyday people exposed to life-altering truths

The Gift of Fire Prometheus was punished by the gods for giving man the gift of fire—and setting humankind on its course of knowledge. For making men as powerful as gods, Prometheus was bound to a rock; every day his body was devoured by a giant eagle. But here, those chains cease, and Prometheus walks from that immortal prison into present-day South Central Los Angeles.

On the Head of a Pin Joshua and Ana are working at Jennings-Tremont Enterprises when they make an incredible discovery. JTE is developing advanced animatronics editing techniques to create movies indistinguishable from live action. But one night Joshua and Ana discover something lingering in the rendered footage…an entity that will lead them into an age beyond the reality they have come to know.

KEY SELLING POINTS:

• Walter Mosley is a lifelong science fiction fan, channeling the character-driven, high-concept SF of Philip K. Dick, Harlan E llison, and J. G. Ballard. • His novel Devil in a Blue Dress was adapted into a film starring Denzel Washington. • He is cowriting a pilot for HBO based on his novel The Long Fall, to be directed by Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs). • Mosley’s versatile writing style will appeal to fans of his previous work as well as SF fans. • Mosley is a critically acclaimed and bestselling novelist who has won an O. Henry Award, a Grammy, and PEN America’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

"Both are distinguished by Mosley’s often biting descriptions of humanity’s humble place in the universe. Fans of thoughtful, subtly eerie present-day fantasy will eagerly await future Crosstown to Oblivion novellas."  —Publishers Weekly

"Mosley fans will devour it." —Library Journal

Last Call for the Living

A ferociously authentic debut about a deadly bank heist and a young teller taken hostage for the ride of his life

For bank teller Charlie Colquitt it was another Saturday. For Hobe Hicklin, an ex-con with nothing to lose, it was another score. For Hobe’s drug-addled, sex-crazed girlfriend, it was more lust, violence, and drugs. But Hicklin’s first mistake was double-crossing his partners in the Aryan Brotherhood. His second was taking a hostage. He and Charlie could hide out for only so long before Hicklin’s past catches up to them. Hot on Hicklin’s trail are a pair of Brotherhood soldiers, ready to burn a path of murder and mayhem to get revenge. GBI Special Agent Sallie Crews and Sheriff Tommy Lang catch the case, and soon Crews is making some dangerous connections. For hard-drinking, despondent Lang, rescuing Charlie might be the key to personal salvation.

KEY SELLING POINTS:

• Last Call for the Living is a riveting, provocative debut from a precocious young author with a fearless, unique voice. • Part gritty, brutally realistic bank heist thriller, Last Call for the Living is also a coming-of-age story about a young teller who discovers who he really is after being taken hostage. • The controversial topic of the Aryan Brotherhood has been a frequent subject of documentaries as well as feature films including American History X. Farris researched the gang for a year to add gritty authenticity to the novel. • Farris was inspired to write Last Call for the Living in part due to his jarring experience working as a bank teller during an armed robbery. • Peter Farris is the son of legendary New York Times bestselling novelist John Farris.

"Last Call for the Living is the greatest bank heist novel since The Getaway and The Friends of Eddie Coyle—perhaps the greatest ever.... Farris’s writing is reminiscent

of Stephen Hunter and Cormac McCarthy at their brutal best."  —Douglas Preston, New York Times bestselling author of Impact

"Last Call for the Living literally explodes with tension. It is a vividly real, hard-

driving and driven story that reads like a thing possessed."  —Whitley Strieber, New York Times bestselling author of Hybrids

He won a minor appointment as secretary to the governor of Montana Territory, but found himself embroiled in territorial problems. In July, 1867, in the eighteenth year of his exile from his beloved Ireland, Meagher disappeared while traveling on a river steamer and was given up as drowned.

"Daughter of God is the way thrillers are supposed to be written. A read you won’t soon forget!"  —Clive Cussler

Lara Blackwood, genetic engineering entrepreneur and presidential advisor, receives a call from an old college friend who asks her help in solving a ghastly epidemic in Tokyo. That phone call sets in motion a chain of death and mayhem stretching from San Francisco to Washington, DC; from Amsterdam to Japan. To her horror, Lara discovers that her life’s work has been perverted to produce a revolutionary new genetic weapon that kills by turning people’s own chromosomes against them. Lara risks assassination to expose the conspiracy behind "Slatewiper"—before a nightmarish terrorist scheme threatens the entire human race with extinction.

KEY SELLING POINTS:

• Daughter of God experienced a surge in sales after it received major publicity for the comparisons between it and Dan Brown’s bestseller The Da Vinci Code, including articles in Newsweek, Time, and The New York Post. • The Da Vinci Legacy was a New York Times and USA Today bestseller. • Film rights to both Daughter of God and The Da Vinci Legacy have been sold to Mark Burnett (Survivor). • Perdue was an investigative reporter and did extensive research in Germany on Nazis.

"Like the high-tech medical thrillers of Michael Crichton, this novel deftly combines hard science and narrative panache…. A novel that feels fresh and original. A must for medical-thriller devotees."  —Booklist

"A timely offering."  —Publishers Weekly
