Apr–Jun 2011 Volume 12, Issue 2, Number 40

Editor’s CornerThe 4th World Children’s Festival on the National

Mall in Washington, DC on June 17-19, 2011 is

both an end and a beginning. The completion

of the 4th Arts Olympiad competitions results

in the winners convening at the festival, where

they collaborate and co-create. New friendships

develop, new neurons light up, and your

perspectives are never the same again.

Joining the Arts Olympiad visual artists at the

festival will be hundreds of amazing young

performers and musicians from across the United

States and around the world. This creative talent

pool will be further nurtured and developed by

educators and trainers who will host workshops

and activities for three days.

This issue is intended primarily for festival

attendees. If you can’t make it to your World

Festival, you can read about the educational

programming that it provides and how the children

from your state (or country) are involved. Once the

festival is over, you can watch the videos and see

the photographs in the next issue.

Happy reading!

Welcome to the World Festival!Welcome to Washington!

disciplines for children’s holistic development. Eminent educators and field experts ranging from Olympians and professional artists to scientists and technologists host activities and workshops to nurture children’s creativity and develop their empathy in a global setting.

The children help produce a complete synesthetic experience—a total work of art on The National Mall—by their dazzling performances, amazing art creations and displays, and their own workshops on issues they are most passionate about. The WCF is a transformative experience where creativity and co-creation become building blocks for innovation and positive social change.

The International Child Art Foundation’s aim is that the WCF empowers the children to shape the future and change the world.

Held every four years since 1999 as ‘Olympics’ of children’s creativity and co-creation, the WCF has evolved into the largest international children’s celebration and a permanent quadrennial event in our nation’s capital.

The Arts Olympiad U.S. state winners and national Arts Olympiad winners from participating countries convene at the WCF and are joined by aspiring musicians and performers who showcase their talents on the ‘World Stage’ setup across from the U.S. Capitol. A free art and sport program for school communities worldwide, the Arts

Olympiad is endorsed by the U.S. Olympic Committee and has “important national and international implications” according to the Congressional Arts Caucus. Nearly five million children world-wide have participated in and benefitted from the Arts Olympiad since its inception in 1997. The winning artworks of the 4th Arts Olympiad will debut at the 4th WCF Exhibition Pavilion, opposite from the National Gallery of Art.

The WCF’s educational programming integrates art and sport with STEM Come be a part of this transformation!

“Travelling half way across the globe from Burma to Washington DC to accept the award I won at the age of 12 has been the life-changing experience and greatest influence over my life and dream…If it weren’t for the ICAF.”Kaung Myat Zaw (Myanmar) WCF 1999

It was the encouragement, the love that people at ICAF gave us that has made me what I am today. Being a doctor it is important to be a good communica-tor and it was at ICAF that I got the courage to communicate with people from different parts of the world and share my ideas and views, now the shy kid that I used to be is nowhere in sight. Hina Inam (Pakistan) - Hina Inam at the 1999 festival

“Looking backward on my experiences there, I can hold it responsible for shaping the young adult I am today.”Ella Gordon-Latty (New Zealand) WCF 2003

“Through the World Children’s Festival, I have learnt that winning was NOT the goal. We are not living alone. A Chinese character representing “person” is a letter with two lines supporting themselves which tells us that one is not living alone.”Rune Kondo (Japan) WCF 2003

“I decided to carry on ICAF’s mission – through myself. Out of the World Children Festival of 2007 was born a small youth volunteer organization – WizArt Club. My creation was aimed at fostering artistic creativity in my community – an ICAF on a smaller scale – by providing free monthly art classes in the public libraries in my area.” Stanislav Nedzelskyi (Texas) WCF 2007

“Ultimately, a flower that blooms with the knowledge and great experiences showered upon it started with just a seed. ICAF has handed this seed to me, and as a citizen of youth, I have the ability to spread on the start of inspiration… The experiences after my involvement have been memorable and life changing.”Sora Nithikasem (New Jersey) WCF 2007
