Lamet impresses, but Kershaw dominates in shutout

Dennis Lin

Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance Friday at Petco Park, the best

pitcher on baseball’s best team returning after a month on the disabled list.

Dinelson Lamet, the least experienced member of the Padres’ rotation, seemed

unfazed by the competition.

For five innings, the rookie kept pace with Kershaw, who showed the opposite of rust.

Another inning of the same would have been an extravagant ask.

In the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 1-0 victory, Kershaw utterly dominated even as Lamet

impressed. The latter did not allow a run until second baseman Chase Utley singled

with two outs in the sixth. Kershaw and three relievers did not allow the Padres to hit

a ball out of the infield.

“It was a pleasure to face (Kershaw), and it definitely motivated me,” Lamet said

through an interpreter. “I knew I was going to have to give my best effort, and I knew

he was going to make pitches, so I had to do the same.”

Lamet retired the side in the first, navigated a pair of walks in the second and mostly

cruised from there. He completed six innings of one-run ball. He fanned 10 batters, at

one point recording six consecutive outs via strike three.

“He went through a very good lineup,” Padres manager Andy Green said. “He threw

sliders in slider counts to guys who were good slider hitters, and still punched them

out with them. His fastball was good, command was good. For the long term, it’s

exciting. You don’t want to lose a game in the short term, but to see somebody square

3

off against Clayton Kershaw and for the most part match him, you can’t ask for

anything more from him.”

The Dodgers scattered six hits against him, but almost every time, Lamet had an

answer.

The exception arrived in his final frame. Lamet allowed consecutive singles to open

the sixth. He responded with a strikeout, then a popout. His pitch count had just

climbed north of 100.

On a 1-2 count, after fouling off back-to-back pitches, Utley sent a liner over Lamet’s

head. Justin Turner was waved around third. A scoreless tie was broken. Lamet

avoided further damage, inducing a groundout.

Since back-to-back five-run outings in July, Lamet has made eight starts, posting a

2.21 ERA, 53 strikeouts and 22 walks.

“I’d love to see the walks continue to go down, because he has to pitch himself out of

some tough situations and it runs his pitch count up a little bit,” Green said.

“...There’s still more in him, and it’s exciting to know that.”

Try as they could, the Padres found pulling even an impossible task. Kershaw yielded

a leadoff infield single to Manuel Margot in the first. He set down each of the next 12

batters. Yangervis Solarte legged out another infield hit in the fifth. Kershaw retired

the next six batters.

The lefty, who had been scheduled for five innings or 75 pitches, went six on 70. He

struck out seven and did not issue a walk. The Padres reached base twice, thanks to

Margot and Solarte’s hustle.

“You don’t know what you’re going to get when (Kershaw is) coming off of an injury,

but he was really good and really sharp,” Green said, “and the only thing you can do is

battle him, force his pitch count up, refuse to punch out as best you can, keep putting

balls in play. We weren’t able to do that.”

The drought continued after Kershaw’s exit. The Padres’ bullpen prevented the

visitors from scoring again, but the Dodgers’ kept the home team off the bases

entirely.

Former Padres pitcher Brandon Morrow, who has reinvented himself as a

flamethrowing reliever, struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh.

Continuing the Dodgers’ mastery, Tony Watson threw up a perfect frame in the

eighth.

Closer Kenley Jansen followed with a 1-2-3 inning, sealing the Padres’ fate.

Twelve hours after the Padres announced they had fired hitting coach Alan Zinter,

they finished with two infield singles, no walks and 12 strikeouts in the box score. San

Diego fell to 3-10 this season against Los Angeles.

Seeking a 'different voice,' Padres fire hitting coach Alan Zinter

Dennis Lin

T“I’d put this at the top of the list of probably most excruciating decisions I’ve ever

made in my life,” Green, a former teammate of Zinter’s, said. “In so many ways, he

brought passion, he worked incredibly hard, he cared immensely.

“It just came down to the belief, the conviction that I had, that if we were going to get

to where we need to go, a different voice was going to be necessary in that seat.”

The Padres rank last in the majors in runs scored, batting average and on-base

percentage. First baseman Wil Myers, who signed a franchise-record extension, has

slumped for most of the season, and right fielder Hunter Renfroe, another potential

cornerstone, recently received a demotion to Triple-A.

Significant struggles, however, do not come as a surprise in a rebuilding year. San

Diego’s current lineup has a combined salary of about $9 million.

“There wasn’t an expectation coming into this season that we were going to see

radical shifts in plate discipline for guys that had never exhibited it in their career,”

Green said. “That’d be an unrealistic expectation of the hitting coach. … This isn’t at

the feet of any player’s performance. This is just evaluating processes and trying to

figure out how to help us take the next step.”

Zinter, who was informed of the Padres’ decision late Wednesday night, did not

return a message seeking comment.

Green said the staffing change was made now, rather than at the end of the season, to

allow Zinter to begin his job search at a critical time of year.

Page 6: sandiego.padres.mlb.com › ... › Padres_Press_Clips... Padres Press ClipsSep 02, 2017  · Kershaw dominates in shutout Dennis Lin Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance

6

“There’s a lot of minor league coordinator jobs that are going to come available

almost in the next couple weeks,” Green said. “It felt incredibly selfish of me to hold

him and miss out on opportunities that were going to pop in the next couple weeks

that he might be a perfect candidate for. He’ll also be available for whatever big-

league jobs become available coming out of the season.”

The Padres will handle hitting-coach responsibilities internally for the remainder of

the season. As is the case each September, various minor league coaches will assist

the major league staff this month. Hitting coordinator Luis Ortiz joined the team

Friday, and others will come up after the organization’s minor league seasons end.

According to Green and General Manager A.J. Preller, both internal and external

candidates will be considered for the full-time role. A formal search will begin during

the offseason.

Before arriving in San Diego, Zinter was Houston’s assistant hitting coach in 2015. He

previously served as a hitting coach in Arizona’s farm system and Cleveland’s minor

league hitting coordinator from 2012-14.

As a player, the former first baseman and catcher spent nearly two decades in the

minors. He saw parts of two seasons in the majors, teaming with Green on the

2004 Diamondbacks.

“Everyone in here has a ton of respect for Z,” Myers said. “He’s a great guy, he’s a guy

that everybody knows has our backs. So it’s tough to see a guy like that go, but it’s just

the way the business goes sometimes.

“That guy meant a lot to my career,” catcher Austin Hedges added. “Starting last year,

he rebuilt my swing. I owe a lot to that guy. … I wish nothing but the best for him

moving forward.”

Zinter’s replacement will be the Padres’ ninth hitting coach since Petco Park opened

in 2004. He was preceded by Jim Lefebvre, Dave Magadan, Merv Rettenmund, Wally

Joyner, Randy Ready, Phil Plantier and Mark Kotsay. Alonzo Powell was as an

assistant under Plantier and Kotsay.

Page 7: sandiego.padres.mlb.com › ... › Padres_Press_Clips... Padres Press ClipsSep 02, 2017  · Kershaw dominates in shutout Dennis Lin Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance

7

“I’m well-aware of the history before I arrived, how many hitting coaches have been

here and eventually gone relatively quickly,” Green said. “I do think it’s separate

entirely.

“Petco Park, how it plays historically, there was a time when it was a very pitcher-

friendly ballpark, and that seems to have changed. I think early on there were some

expectations that were somewhat unrealistic based on the way the ballpark was

playing, and that probably has something to account for a lot of the (coaching)

changes early on. I think our ballpark plays very fairly now. … So I think those

expectations, to see growth from a numbers perspective, are much more realistic than

they used to be.

“That said, we’re in the middle of a rebuild. It’s an understanding that there was going

to be tough times this year from a numbers perspective as we introduced a lot of

young guys to the major leagues. … It’s looking at the processes and the way things

operate behind the scenes, just holding to a conviction deep down that a different

voice was going to be necessary for us to take the next steps we need to take.”

Zinter is the third coach fired by Green, joining former first base coach Tarrik Brock

and Eddie Rodriguez, who worked in a variety of capacities last season.

“If you ask me where the learning curve is the steepest, it’s in the hiring process,” said

Green, who had never managed in the majors before 2016. “...That doesn’t mean that

every time you let somebody go, those guys aren’t big-league coaches or they’re

mistakes. They’re part of my learning curve, too, of understanding what resonates

with me and what connects.

“I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to be in an organization that’s giving me

the opportunity to learn.”

Green last month received a three-year extension, through 2021. The contract

statuses of his remaining coaches will be discussed after the end of the season. It is

unlikely that Mark McGwire, a former hitting coach, slides into Zinter’s vacated

position, as the Padres are pleased with the job he has done as Green’s bench coach.

Page 8: sandiego.padres.mlb.com › ... › Padres_Press_Clips... Padres Press ClipsSep 02, 2017  · Kershaw dominates in shutout Dennis Lin Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance

8

“You don’t want to get in a situation where you have constant turnover,” Preller said.

“The goal is to get a group of guys who will be here for the long haul. Obviously, with

(Green’s) extension, showing faith in him, and we’re looking to get a group of coaches

he can grow with that can make him better and he can make better.”

he Padres have used this season in an attempt to determine key players in their

future. The evaluation has not been limited to those on the field.

On Friday, the team announced the firing of hitting coach Alan Zinter, who presided

over one of the youngest, and least productive, offenses in baseball. Zinter, 49, was

hired before the 2016 season, Andy Green’s first as manager.

Padres call up pitching reinforcements, DFA Quackenbush

Dennis Lin

With a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday and consecutive afternoon games to

follow, the Padres reinforced their pitching staff with their first group of September

call-ups. As rosters expanded Friday, the team recalled relievers Kyle McGrath and

Jose Valdez from Triple-A El Paso, and selected minor league signee Jordan

Lyles from the same affiliate.

The Padres cleared room on their 40-man roster by designating Kevin

Quackenbushfor assignment and outrighting Dillon Overton to El Paso. In another

move, shortstop Erick Aybar was activated from the disabled list, where a fractured

left foot sent him July 22.

Valdez has had multiple stints with the Padres this season, and McGrath made his major league debut July 30. Lyles, who signed with San Diego on Aug. 8, will start the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In five starts for El Paso, the former first-round draft pick posted a 4.50 ERA.

“I signed over here to be a starter, and El Paso was the path I had to go through to get

stretched out,” Lyles said. “I’m excited to be with a really good organization, a great

city and a great place to pitch at Petco. I’m just looking forward to it.”

Quackenbush, once a promising bullpen arm, posted a 7.86 ERA in 20 appearances

with the Padres this year. Over parts of four major league seasons, the right-hander

had a 4.08 ERA.

“It’s tough,” manager Andy Green said. “Quack’s loved here. It was the need for a

roster spot and the belief that some of these guys that are coming here are going to

10

kind of assume that next opportunity for relief roles here. … My guess is he finds a

way back to the big leagues relatively quick.”

Overton was claimed off waivers from Seattle in June. The left-hander made one spot

start for San Diego, allowing four runs in 4 2/3 innings.

The Padres are expected to promote more minor leaguers later this month, after El

Paso and Double-A San Antonio finish their seasons. The former affiliate is hunting

for a playoff spot, while San Antonio already has clinched a postseason berth.

First pitch: Jordan Lyles picked to start in Saturday's doubleheader

Jeff Sanders

After two years in long relief, Jordan Lyles was looking for a place to start games

again when the Rockies released him on Aug. 1. The Padres provided that

opportunity, first in El Paso and now – for at least one game – in San Diego.

The 26-year-old right-hander was added to the roster Friday and will start the

nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader against Dodgers right-hander Yu Darvish.

“I signed over here to be a starter and El Paso was the path I had to go through to get

stretched out,” Lyles said Friday upon joining the Padres. “I'm excited to be with a

really good organization, a great city and a great place to pitch at Petco. I'm just

looking forward to it.”

To be clear, Lyles said he’s up for whatever role the Padres have for him after

Saturday’s doubleheader.

He was, however, far more effective as a starting pitcher in the Pacific Coast League

than he was in the Rockies’ bullpen, where he had a 6.94 ERA in 46 2/3 innings at the

time of his release.

With El Paso, Lyles posted a 4.50 ERA, 20 strikeouts, eight walks and a 1.40 WHIP

over five starts (20 innings). He pushed his pitch-count to 83 and 85 his last two

outings – his primary focus with El Paso – and expects to have the stamina to throw

past 100 pitches Saturday night.

The 38th overall pick in the 2008 draft, Lyles won as many as seven games in both

2013 and 2014 with the Rockies. His new manager, Andy Green, provided the

Page 12: sandiego.padres.mlb.com › ... › Padres_Press_Clips... Padres Press ClipsSep 02, 2017  · Kershaw dominates in shutout Dennis Lin Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance

12

following scouting report as Lyles looks to reestablish himself as a major league

starter.

“He's moved back and forth over time with the way he throws his fastball,” Green

said. “He's got a four-seam fastball and a sinker and he's gone back and forth as he's

been in the big leaguers. It's a traditional mix after that -- kind of a slurve and a slider

and a feel for a change-up.”

Admittedly, Lyles has thrown fewer and fewer change-ups – his fourth pitch – while

in the Rockies’ bullpen. His four-seamer sits 95 mph, his sinker is a tad below that

and he throws a hard slider (90.8 mph) as well as a mid-80s curve.

Other rosters moves on Friday – the first day rosters can expand – include

relievers Kyle McGrath and Jose Valdez arriving from Triple-A El Paso and

shortstop Erick Aybar (foot) coming off the disabled list. Right-hander

Kevin Quackenbushwas designated for assignment and left-hander Dillon

Overton was outrighted to El Paso.

Padres split with Zinter Roster additions aren’t the only changes in the Padres clubhouse. The team on Friday

morning announced it was parting with hitting coach Alan Zinter, the eighth hitting

coach since the Padres moved into Petco Park in 2004.

Here’s the early story on that decision, complete with quotes from Green and General

Manager A.J. Preller.

And here’s a look at the Petco Park-era hitting coaches, all of them scapegoats for

offenses that have struggled since moving into the downtown venue.

Talking with ... Padres bench coach Mark McGwire

Jeff Sanders

Mark McGwire, the owner of 583 homers — 11th all-time — joined the Cardinals’ Hall of Fame last

weekend despite admitted steroid use as a player keeping him from Cooperstown. He’s in his

second year as Padres manager Andy Green’s bench coach. Whatever the future holds for the 53-

year-old Southern California native, McGwire is more than happy with the present in San Diego.

Union-Tribune: You were in St. Louis for 4½ years. What did it mean to you to be elected in their

Hall of Fame?

McGwire: It meant everything to me because the bottom line is the fans, Cardinal Nation, voted me

in. For a player to play 4½ years in one city, which is not very long, for them to think that much of

me, to put me in their hall of fame, when you look at the list of Hall-of-Famers who played in St.

Louis many, many years, I was very honored. I was very humbled.

U-T: You’ve fallen off the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot. You’re seeing guys like Roger Clemens and

Barry Bonds gain momentum in their voting. Do you wonder if your career will get looked differently

down the line by the Veterans Committee?

McGwire: Like I’ve said from Day 1, it’s out of my hands – just like the Cardinals Hall of Fame. It’s

out of my hands. It’s something that I’m OK with whatever happens. If I’m lucky enough to where

one day somewhere down the line it happens, I will accept it with open arms and be ecstatic.

U-T: Are you, in your mind, a Hall-of-Famer?

McGwire: My numbers are definitely Hall-of-Fame numbers. Absolutely.

U-T: Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge were chasing your rookie homer record until tailing off

recently (Bellinger came off the DL on Wednesday). Do you want that record to stay your record?

Page 18: sandiego.padres.mlb.com › ... › Padres_Press_Clips... Padres Press ClipsSep 02, 2017  · Kershaw dominates in shutout Dennis Lin Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance

18

McGwire: I’m thoroughly excited about (them chasing it). Listen, what I’m really excited about is

the home run is back. Power is back. People love home runs. If you think back to three to five years

ago, when pitching was dominating, it was, where are the runs? Now you’ve got home runs back.

You’ve got young kids now who are absolutely demolishing the baseball. Giancarlo Stanton is doing

his thing. It’s awesome to watch what he’s doing because he’s finally healthy. It’s awesome. When I

broke the rookie record, it was 31 years to the year. Now it’s 30 years to the year when I broke it.

Records are meant to be broken. That’s all I can say. I’m thrilled to watch. I wish I could watch

Stanton in person, but I get to watch Bellinger in person and I see what he’s doing. It’s thoroughly

fantastic.

U-T: The pitchers’ theory is the ball is juiced. Thoughts?

McGwire: Oh gosh. Let’s just say these guys are really, really good. Just stop throwing it over the

middle of the plate for them, you know. Let’s give credit where credit is due. These guys are really

good and they’re showing it. It’s awesome. It’s so good for the game and I hope to God MLB takes it

and promotes it really well.

U-T: Andy Green was extended through 2021. What doesn’t the greater baseball community – fans,

people outside of San Diego – know about Andy Green yet?

McGwire: His baseball IQ is off the charts. The way his mind works is like my former

manager, Tony La Russa. I know Tony. Tony knows Andy. They worked together in Arizona. I’ve had

Richard, Stewart open twin bill vs. Dodgers

By Nathan Ruiz / MLB.com

Making up a May 7 rainout, the Padres and Dodgers will play a doubleheader Saturday at Petco

Park.

The first game will pit Los Angeles right-hander Brock Stewart against left-hander Clayton

Richard. Stewart has a 6.52 ERA as a starter this season, compared to a 1.26 mark in relief.

"It's a mindset," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "When he takes the mound and goes as

hard as he can for as long as he can, whether it's 50 pitches or 100 pitches, it's the mindset.

Guys coming out of the 'pen have that mindset, and it translates to more efficiency and better

production."

Richard will make his fifth start against the Dodgers in 2017. He's posted a 5.79 ERA in the first

four.

"You can see the physical adjustments that some of them have made in the box after they've

become more comfortable with him, but he's smart," Padres manager Andy Green said. "He

makes adjustments back, so it's definitely a chess match."

In the nightcap, right-hander Jordan Lyles will make his Padres debut, opposing Yu Darvish.

Lyles had a 4.50 ERA in five starts with Triple-A El Paso after the organization claimed him on

waivers from Colorado. He had a 2.87 ERA in his final three starts with the Chihuahuas.

"He was throwing the ball well at the end in El Paso," Green said. "We definitely need somebody

to come up here and take down some innings for us and give us an opportunity to win games,

and he fits that description perfectly."

Things to know about these games

● Since being traded to the Dodgers, Darvish has struck out 42.1 percent of the right-handed

batters he has faced. That's the best of any starter in that span.

Page 20: sandiego.padres.mlb.com › ... › Padres_Press_Clips... Padres Press ClipsSep 02, 2017  · Kershaw dominates in shutout Dennis Lin Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance

20

● Erick Aybar, activated from the disabled list Friday, will play shortstop for the Padres in one of

the two games. He broke his left foot July 21 when he hit a foul ball that struck it.

● Saturday's outing will be Lyles' first start in the Majors since May 23, 2016, with the Rockies.

Since then, he has a 5.80 ERA in 68 relief appearances.

In duel with Dodgers' ace, Lamet stands tall Padres rookie holds LA to 1 run, strikes out 10

By Nathan Ruiz / MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- As Dinelson Lamet walked off the mound after each of his six innings Friday

night, Clayton Kershaw made his way to it, yet the Padres' rookie right-hander did not overreact

to the moment.

The left-handed National League Cy Young Award winner was slightly better than Lamet in a 1-

0 loss to the Dodgers. But in a start against the best team and best pitcher in baseball, Lamet

was not intimidated, striking out 10 in a continuation of his recent success.

"It was a pleasure to face him, and it definitely motivated me," Lamet said through a team

interpreter. "I knew I was going to have to give my best effort, and I knew he was going to make

pitches, so I had to do the same."

After producing a 6.40 ERA across his first nine starts, Lamet has turned his sterling two-pitch

mix into strong results. In eight outings since late July, Lamet's slider and fastball have pushed

him to a 2.49 ERA.

Even as Lamet challenged a team with 11 more victories than any other club, Padres manager

Andy Green saw the same pitcher who dominated the lowly Giants and Phillies in recent weeks.

"He looked poised," Green said. "He looked no different than usual. … To see somebody square

off against Clayton Kershaw and for the most part match him, you can't ask for anything more

from him."

Friday's duel lasted only six frames. Kershaw, in his first start off the disabled list, was held to 70

pitches. Lamet needed 107 to last as long, the result of the Dodgers fighting off pitch after pitch.

He retired three of the first four Dodgers he faced with strikeouts, managing to pitch around a

pair of walks in the second. Through three innings, the only hit Lamet allowed came on a

chopped grounder third baseman Cory Spangenberg couldn't barehand into an out.

Page 22: sandiego.padres.mlb.com › ... › Padres_Press_Clips... Padres Press ClipsSep 02, 2017  · Kershaw dominates in shutout Dennis Lin Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance

22

"His stuff is electric," Spangenberg said. "When he's on, he's got the stuff to be a very, very

good pitcher in this game."

He struck out side in the fourth, and when Kershaw matched his feat in the bottom of the frame,

Lamet simply did it once more in the fifth, again maneuvering past two baserunners.

The traffic caught up to him in the sixth. Justin Turner and Cody Bellinger began the inning with

singles. Lamet was one out from escaping, but on a night he had much success getting a third

strike, he couldn't do so with Chase Utley. Down 1-2, Utley fouled off a pair of pitches before

shooting a third Lamet offering up the middle for an RBI single.

As his rookie campaign nears an end, Lamet's biggest goal is staying healthy. Green would like

to see him issue fewer walks, of which there were three Friday.

What that means for Lamet's future, and that of the Padres, provides Green with optimism.

"There's still more in him," Green said, "and it's exciting to know that."

Petco offering virtual reality Derby experience

By Nathan Ruiz / MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- For the remainder of the season, Padres fans will have the opportunity to experience

what it's like to homer at Petco Park.

Beginning Friday, the Padres are hosting MLB's Home Run Derby virtuality experience at Petco

Park's Lexus Club behind home plate. The game, based on the Home Run Derby mobile app,

places users in the Petco Park batter's box, where they have 90 seconds to hit as many virtual home

runs as they can while receiving cheers from thousands of Padres fans. The experience will move

throughout Petco Park, enabling fans around the ballpark to play.

"We want to be a ballpark full of innovations," chief operating officer Erik Greupner said. "We really

want to lead on the cutting edge, and virtual-reality technology is one of the areas of the cutting

edge. … We look forward to continuing to developing that in partnership with Major League Baseball

and the other clubs."

The distance of each home run is tracked, as well as the launch angle and exit velocity. A point

value is assigned to each hit, providing a competitive aspect to the free game.

"The Padres were really, really supportive and wanted to work with us in bringing this here for the

month of September," said Jamie Leece, MLB vice president of games and VR. "We worked with

them closely to create Petco Park and bring this installation for the fans here for the next 15 home

games.

"Creating a better fan experience from beginning to end is going to be great."

The project was introduced in July at MLB Battlegrounds in London, using Boston's Fenway Park

and Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium as models. Fans at the All-Star Game FanFest in Miami had a

chance to preview the Home Run Derby later that week, crushing homers in Marlins Park using the

VR system. The Padres were among the teams that took note of the game during All-Star festivities,

sparking a conversation between Leece and Ray Chan, the team's vice president of IT, to bring that

experience to Petco Park.

Page 24: sandiego.padres.mlb.com › ... › Padres_Press_Clips... Padres Press ClipsSep 02, 2017  · Kershaw dominates in shutout Dennis Lin Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance

24

Players wear a VR headset that gives them a 360-degree view of the ballpark and swing a

shortened bat with sensors on the end. Light sensors in the cage setup help bring their swings to

life.

Several fans who participated were impressed with the realism of the game.

"I would give it a 10 out of 10," Abed Abusaleh said. "I'm definitely going to tell my friends to do this."

Jeremy Horowitz, the Padres' senior vice president of business development, was among the team's

employees who played the game Friday before it was introduced to the crowd.

"It's a terrific experience to be able to see what it's like to stand in the batter's box of a Major League

Baseball park, to see the path of the ball after you make contact and watch a home run go over the

fence," Horowitz said. "I think a fan of any level or any age will enjoy this. I think it's going to be

really popular."

The ballparks used in the game come from the frameworks created for the Home Run Derby app

and RBI Baseball video game. Developing the game for VR took about six months, Leece said,

while his team built the Petco Park used in the game in about a month using the shape that had

already been created.

Leece said 10-15 teams have inquired about having the game at their ballpark in some capacity in

2018. There are also plans for continued development, including adding achievements and the

possible creation of an at-home version.

"Eventually, as VR becomes more and more prevalent, this is the type of experience people will buy,

no different than buying 'MLB The Show' or 'RBI Baseball' for their consoles," Leece said. "... But for

now, because we're still in the early days of consumer adoption, this is more going to be something

that's going to be an activation, where you go to a place and you get to experience something that

you, quite frankly, have never seen before."

The Padres hope to have the game at Petco Park in 2018, Greupner said.

"We're talking to potential partners to roll it out in a larger scale within the ballpark," he said. "We

hope to continue to give the fans that experience and remain on the cutting edge of what's available

within sports."

Padres can't back Lamet's gem, fall to Dodgers

By A.J. Cassavell and Ken Gurnick / MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- Clayton Kershaw hadn't pitched for a month and a half because of a back injury. It

certainly didn't show Friday night at Petco Park.

For a decade, Kershaw has been the Dodgers' stopper, and he was back to his old self Friday,

outdueling Padres rookie Dinelson Lamet in a 1-0 victory. Kershaw's six scoreless innings helped

Los Angeles snap a season-long five-game skid, and it moved the Dodgers an astonishing 51

games over .500. They have won each of the last 16 games started by their three-time Cy Young

Award-winning southpaw. His 12-game win streak is the most by a Dodgers since Burt Hooton in

1975.

How good was Kershaw? In his first start since July 23, he was limited to 70 pitches, but he still struck out seven Friars while allowing only two infield hits.

"Efficiency wise, I think it was as good as you could have expected or hoped," said Kershaw.

"Usually you think about 15 pitches an inning. I was fortunate to get through six. I got early outs and

threw strikes so they had to swing the bats."

The bullpen picked up right where he left off, tossing three perfect innings, and the Padres didn't hit

a ball out of the infield all night.

"I was wondering with (Alex Verdugo, debuting in center field), waiting for him to make a play, I

haven't seen him make a play all night," manager Dave Roberts said. "I didn't realize none of the

outfielders made a play."

Lamet was almost as good. But he allowed a sixth-inning RBI single to Dodgers second

baseman Chase Utley that proved to be the difference. The righty dazzled with his slider, striking out

10 -- his second-highest total -- while allowing six hits and walking three.

"It was a pleasure to face [Kershaw], and it definitely motivated me," Lamet said. "I knew I was going

to have to give my best effort, and I knew he was going to make pitches, so I had to do the same."

Page 26: sandiego.padres.mlb.com › ... › Padres_Press_Clips... Padres Press ClipsSep 02, 2017  · Kershaw dominates in shutout Dennis Lin Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance

26

Kenley Jansen, wearing golden spikes, pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 36th save, tied for the

league lead. Roberts said Jansen would donate the spikes to be auctioned for charity. He was

asked if the league would fine Jansen for violating the uniform code.

"He can afford it," Roberts said. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Lamet's lament: Sitting on 100 pitches, Lamet found himself with two strikes on Utley in the game's decisive moment. Utley spoiled two of Lamet's would-be putaway pitches before lacing a fastball back up the middle. Justin Turner, who finished the night 3-for-4, scored easily from second. Escape act: Utley had a chance to do more damage in the top of the eighth. Yasiel Puig swiped second on the first pitch of his at-bat, putting two men in scoring position. But Padres reliever Kyle McGrath -- the first of the Padres' four September callups to see game action -- got Utley to pop to third, keeping the game within reach.

QUOTABLE

"He definitely wasn't rusty. His fastball had life like it normally has. His breaking pitches were as

sharp as they normally were. He looked like he was in midseason form." -- Padres third baseman Cory

Spangenberg

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS

Since Sept. 21, 2013, the Dodgers have won each of Kershaw's 12 starts against the Padres. He

has allowed no more than one earned run in 11 of them.

REPLAY REVIEW Chris Taylor was twice cut down on the bases Friday night. He singled in the third, only to be caught stealing on catcher Austin Hedges' laser to second base. Then, he singled in the seventh, but was picked off by Padres right-hander Phil Maton. Taylor was ruled safe initially, but replays confirmed that Wil Myers' backhand swipe tag beat him to the bag.

WHAT'S NEXT

Dodgers: Brock Stewart will be recalled to start the 12:40 p.m. PT first game and Yu Darvish will

start the 7:10 p.m. PT second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Stewart will try to balance the

scales of dramatically different WHIP splits (2.069 as starter, 0.767 as reliever). Darvish will try to

implement mechanical adjustments he's been working on in the bullpen almost daily.

Padres: Clayton Richard starts the opener on Saturday, and Jordan Lyles will get the ball in the

nightcap as the Padres host their first doubleheader since July 1, 2006. Lyles, who signed a Minor

League deal with San Diego last month, was called up Friday, after posting a 4.50 ERA with Triple-A

El Paso.

Padres add Lyles, activate Aybar from DL McGrath, Valdez recalled from Triple-A as rosters expand

By A.J. Cassavell / MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres made four September callups Friday as rosters expanded across the

league. Righty reliever Kevin Quackenbush was not among them. In fact, in what qualified as a

minor roster surprise, Quackenbush was designated for assignment instead.

The move cleared room on the 40-man squad for Jordan Lyles to have his contract selected

from Triple-A El Paso. Lyles, who signed a Minors deal with the Padres last month, will start

Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Dodgers.

"He was throwing the ball well at the end in El Paso," said Padres manager Andy Green. "We

definitely need somebody to come up here and take down some innings for us and give us an

opportunity to win games, and he fits that description perfectly."

As expected, the club also activated shortstop Erick Aybar from the disabled list. Lefty

reliever Kyle McGrath and righty reliever Jose Valdez were recalled from Triple-A El Paso as

well.

Beginning Sept. 1, clubs can recall any players on their 40-man squad. The Padres expect more

to come as the month continues -- specifically after El Paso's season ends. The Chihuahuas

entered Friday tied for the division lead with four games to play.

Quackenbush posted a 7.86 ERA this season in 20 appearances for the big league club. He

served as their most frequent stopgap solution, whenever the 'pen found itself short-handed.

Quackenbush spent five separate stints with the Padres this year.

"It's tough," Green said. "Quack's loved here. It was about the need for a roster spot and the

belief that some of these other guys that are coming are going to assume that opportunity for a

relief role here."

Page 28: sandiego.padres.mlb.com › ... › Padres_Press_Clips... Padres Press ClipsSep 02, 2017  · Kershaw dominates in shutout Dennis Lin Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance

28

Quackenbush was set to run out of options next season. Now, the Padres have seven days to

either reinstate Quackenbush, trade him, release him or place him on waivers.

Lyles, meanwhile, spent the first half of the season with the Rockies where he notched a 6.94

ERA in 33 appearances. He was designated on July 29 and signed with the Padres a week

later.

In five starts for El Paso, Lyles posted a 4.50 ERA. He has plenty of experience in the 'pen as

well, and his role following Saturday's start remains undefined.

"I'm comfortable with any role," Lyles said. "I've done it all."

Aybar hadn't played a game since July 21, when he fouled a ball off his left foot and broke a

bone. At the time, there were questions as to whether Aybar would be able to return this

season. But his recovery went smoothly, and he returned two or three weeks ahead of

schedule.

Rounding out the callups, McGrath and Valdez will serve as critical bullpen depth. Their

presence was close to a necessity, as the Padres have 11 games in the next 10 days, including

Saturday's twinbill.

McGrath debuted July 30 and allowed four runs over 6 2/3 innings in his first big league stint.

Valdez, a May waiver claim from the Angels, has posted a 6.00 ERA in eight appearances for

the Padres.

Padres cut ties with hitting coach Zinter Friars on pace to finish last in MLB in average, OBP in back-to-back years

By AJ Cassavell / MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres parted ways with Alan Zinter on Friday, relieving the hitting coach of his

duties after two seasons with the club.

A formal search for a new hitting coach will follow during the offseason. The Padres will fill Zinter's role

internally for the remainder of the year. Minor League hitting coordinator Luis Ortiz will arrive Friday,

and various other coaches will join the staff as the organization's Minor League seasons end.

Padres manager Andy Green said the timing of the decision should allow Zinter to begin his pursuit of

other opportunities. Green also spoke to the personal difficulty of the move.

"It was right at the top of the list of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make," said Green, whose

relationship with Zinter dates back to their time as players and coaches in the D-backs organization. "I

just, deep down, held a conviction that if we were going to get to the next level as an organization, we

were going to need another voice in that seat, as difficult a decision as that is."

Zinter was hired by San Diego as hitting coach following the 2015 season after previously serving as

assistant hitting coach in Houston in '15. He began his coaching career as a hitting coach in the D-backs'

system from '08-11 before spending '12-14 as the Indians' Minor League hitting coordinator.

Featuring the league's youngest offense, the Padres have struggled this season. Their .233 batting

average and .298 on-base percentage are the worst in baseball by a wide margin. (Though they've

slugged slightly better at .397, ranking ahead of the Pirates and Giants.) It's very likely to end up as the

second season in a row that the Friars have sat at the bottom of the big league rankings in batting

average and OBP. They're last in runs this year, too.

Much of that isn't attributable to Zinter. San Diego's roster currently features only two players -- Wil

Myers and Yangervis Solarte -- who have previously put together qualifying Major League seasons at

the plate. Seven Padres hitters have fewer than two years of big league service time.

Page 30: sandiego.padres.mlb.com › ... › Padres_Press_Clips... Padres Press ClipsSep 02, 2017  · Kershaw dominates in shutout Dennis Lin Clayton Kershaw made a much-anticipated appearance

30

"We're realistic. We know we have talented young hitters, so there are going to be some growing pains,"

said Padres general manager A.J. Preller. "But ultimately, just sitting down, weighing out what we were

looking for at that spot, we decided we were looking for a different voice there going forward."

Now, the search begins for a replacement. The Padres' next hitting coach will be their fourth in the past

five years.

"We'll start the search, really, right now, gathering a list of candidates, doing our homework as far as

guys who we feel like could be a potential fit," said Preller. "We'll then let the regular season unfold, and

once the season ends, we'll be able to hit the ground running, sit down with some different guys. There's

no set timeframe to find the right guy, but it gives us an opportunity to get a head start."

The move came as a surprise in San Diego's clubhouse, which seemed to universally respect Zinter.

"That guy meant a lot to my career," said Padres catcher Austin Hedges. "Starting last year, he rebuilt

my swing. I owe a lot to that guy. The game's a business. I understand it's a business. I think we're

moving forward now. … I love the guy. I went to war with him. He meant a lot to my career, like I said. I

wish nothing but the best for him moving forward."

Added Myers: "He's a great person. He's a guy that cares a ton about what's going on here, he cares a ton

about hitters, he's really invested in every single one of our at-bats. ... Everyone in here has a ton of

respect for Z. He's a great guy, he's a guy that everybody knows he has our backs. So it's tough to see a

guy like that go, but it's just the way the business goes sometimes."

During his pregame media session, Green harped on the team's poor on-base percentage -- though he

didn't place that blame on Zinter. Organizationally, Green said, the Padres have increased their focus on

reaching base at a higher clip. He's hopeful that translates better at the big league level.

Several of the club's presumed top run producers have struggled this year, most notably Myers

(.233/.319/.441) and Hunter Renfroe (.230/.285/.443), who was recently sent to Triple-A El Paso.

That said, Zinter has also presided over breakout seasons from Jose Pirela and Cory Spangenberg.

"He's worked hard, and he's helped us take steps forward," Green said of Zinter. "He's done nothing

wrong. He's extremely passionate, and all of those players in that clubhouse know the depth of the level

he cares for them. That's what makes it even more hard. And it makes it hard on them to do that in the

middle of the season. But it seemed right to do it now, to give him the opportunity to pursue his next

opportunity."

Clayton Kershaw strong in return, Dodgers snap skid with 1-0 win Associated Press

SAN DIEGO -- It's almost as if Clayton Kershaw hadn't been away at all. The Los Angeles ace was sharp in his first start in five weeks, holding the San Diego Padres to two infield singles in six innings in a 1-0 victory Friday night that snapped the Dodgers' season-high five-game losing streak. Kershaw (16-2) hadn't started since July 23, when he was pulled after two innings with a strained lower back that landed him on the disabled list.

"Efficiency-wise I think it was as good as I could have expected," said Kershaw, who was targeted for five innings or 75 pitches, and threw 70. "I really didn't pitch any differently. I was throwing early strikes where they had to swing the bat."

The lefty struck out seven and walked none. The only hits he allowed were Manuel Margot's soft grounder to second opening the first and Yangervis Solarte's grounder to short opening the fifth. Was he surprised?

"You never truly really know until you get back on a big-league mound and get big-league hitters out," he said.

Remarkably, the Padres didn't hit a single ball to the outfield. Three relievers each threw a perfect inning, with Kenley Jansen pitching the ninth for his 36th save. Brandon Morrow struck out the side in the seventh. Kershaw improved to 3-0 against San Diego this season and 17-6 lifetime. He's won a career-high 12 straight decisions, the longest active streak in the majors. He hasn't lost since May 1.

"I didn't expect him to be that sharp, quite honestly, but with him, you can never underestimate him," manager Dave Roberts said. "The sharpness of all his pitches, fastball both sides of the plate, slider, introducing the curveball early, he was on point. Competitive, obviously, efficient."

Kershaw felt he could have returned two weeks ago, but Roberts said the team "slow-played things. We were very conservative. The effort level, the adrenaline, the way we made him reach all those markers, we expected him to be like this."

The Dodgers, who have MLB's best record at 92-41, snapped their longest losing streak since April 2016.

"It's nice to shake hands," Roberts said.

32

San Diego rookie Dinelson Lamet (7-6) pitched well, other than giving up three singles in the sixth, when the Dodgers scored the game's only run. He allowed one run and six hits in six innings while striking out 10 and walking three. Lamet allowed singles to Justin Turner and rookie Cody Bellinger opening the inning and retired the next two batters before Chase Utley hit an RBI single to center. "I think for the long term it's exciting," San Diego manager Andy Green said about Lamet. "You lose a game short term, but to see somebody square off against Clayton Kershaw, and for the most part match him, you can't ask for anything more from him. One pitch to Utley that he hits into center field there, and outside of that he was really good today. So we're pleased with that."

Lamet said it was "a pleasure" to face Kershaw. "It definitely motivated me. I knew that I was going to have to give my best effort and knew he was going to make pitches so I had to do the same," he said through a translator.

"It's something that I was preparing, leading up to this game. Once I knew I was going to face the Dodgers and against a lineup with a lot of lefties, and there have been moments where I've had a few struggles against lefties, so I knew I needed to bear down and focus on that and really focus on getting guys out early in the count."

Turner had three hits.

Padres On Deck: Avila, Reed Lead

Single-A Fort Wayne to Important

Win

Triple-A El Paso loses, but retains edge in PCL

By Bill Center

Right-handed starter Pedro Avila allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in five innings and center fielder Buddy Reedwas 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs Friday night as Single-A Fort Wayne defeated Great Lakes 5–2 to clinch the home-field advantage for the first round of the Midwest League playoffs. Avila lowered his earned run average to 3.05. Reed is hitting .230. Second baseman Reinaldo Ilarraza (.226) also homered in the TinCaps’ regular season home finale.

Elsewhere in the Padres’ system:

— Right-handed starter Kyle Lloyd (7.02 ERA) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in six innings, although Triple-A El Paso suffered a 3–2, 10-inning loss at Sacramento. Despite the loss, the Chihuahuas retained their tie-breaker lead for the Pacific Coast League Pacific South Division title with three games to play.

— Left-handed starter Nick Margevicius (1.24 earned run average) allowed three hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts over five innings for Short-Season Single-A Tri-City.

The Padres’ roster additions Friday triggered a wave of adjustments in the Padres system entering the final week of the regular season.
