Butterfly Garden By: Kennedy Leggett

Do you think we should change the butterfly garden? No, I do not think we should change the butterfly corral. The garden is too pretty to be changed. People have worked very hard to build it, so we should not change it or take it down. As you can see, I think the butterfly garden should remain as it is.

Dork Diaries: Not So Dorky Drama Queen Author: Rachel Renee Rusell

AR Level: 4.9 Points: 4.0 Book Review By: Alyssa Bellard

This is the 9th book in the series, so you may want to read the others first! Nicky Maxwell is in middle school and has a perfect life, well almost perfect. Her life would be perfect if it weren’t for two things: the biggest drama queen and most popular girl in the school (or world) and the fact that her most valuable possession (HER DIARY) is missing. I think you should read this book because you can compare your life to Nicky’s life as you read the story.

Giving Thanks By: Kennedy McDade

Thanksgiving is the time of year when the weather gets cooler, and the leaves are falling with beautiful, changing colors. What I love most about this time of year is being able to look back on the things I am thankful for in my life. When I think of all the things I am grateful for, the first thing that comes to mind is my family. I’m thankful to have a mom that’s so cool. She takes good care of me by helping me and teaching me to be the best I can be. I also appreciate my cousin Kylee for being so much fun to talk to. Although she lives in California, she calls me all of the time with the funniest jokes. She’s just like some of my best friends at school. For example, my friend Lakien alwsys knows the right things to do or say to make me laugh. I am also grateful to God for giving me the things I have to be who I am. He’s given me a home to live in and everything I need. Let’s not forget about the food that sits on the table on Thanksgiving Day. My mouth is watering just thinking about my mom’s macaroni and cheese! But seriously, we all have something to be thankful for. So this year, let’s take some time to reflect on the wonderful things that make us who we are today. And so I ask, what are you thankful for in your life?

Thanksgiving – Did You Know?

By: Grace Culpepper 1. President Abraham Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November the official national holiday of Thanksgiving. 2. Sarah Josepha Hale petitioned for a national Thanksgiving holiday for close to 40 years. She is also the author of “Mary Had a Little Lamb”. 3. Congress made Thanksgiving an official national holiday in 1941. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest pumpkin pie ever baked weighed 2,020 pounds and measured just over 12 feet long. 4. Three towns in the U.S. take their name from the traditional Thanksgiving bird, including Turkey, Texas, Turkey Creek, Louisiana and Turkey, North Carolina. 5. The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade took place in New York in 1924. 6. Tony Sarg designed the first giant hot air balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in 1927. 7. Snoopy has appeared as a giant balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade more times than any other character in history. 8. The first time the Detroit Lions played football on Thanksgiving Day was in 1934. The NBC radio network broadcasted the game on 94 stations across the country. It was the first national Thanksgiving football broadcast. Since then they have played a game every Thanksgiving (except between 1949 and 1944). 9. Americans eat roughly 535 million pounds of turkey on Thanksgiving.

Book Review By: Glory Vouffo

It’s Hard to Dribble With Your Feet Author: Val Priebe AR Level: 3.2 Points: 0.5 This story is about a girl named Carmen who wants to join her school’s soccer team at Victory School for Super Athletes. When she was eight, she discovered that she had the super skill of kicking. She asked the team’s soccer captain, Lynsey, if she can join the team. Lynsey says she can join the team if her parents will allow her to join. Carmen goes home and asks her parents if she can join the team. If you want to learn the answer Carmen’s parents gave her, you will need to read the book. I think people should read this book because it tells you about someone trying something new.

Mosquitoes- The Most Dangerous Predators in the World

By: Joseph Mele

When you see a mosquito, you probably just think of them as an annoying pest. Most people don’t realize the real danger behind them. Only female mosquitoes bite which makes the males harmless to people. When a mosquito bites, it injects a small amount of saliva into your blood. Sometimes the saliva contains diseases such as yellow fever or malaria. People who get these diseases almost never live. Because of this, mosquitoes are the most dangerous predator in the world, tied with humans. I’m not saying you should never go outside again because there is only a small chance that you will get infected, but if you are not a risk taker, then you should not go outside...for the rest of your life!

My Everyday Life By: Knoelani Gobert

I have something to do almost everyday after school except for Mondays when I only have to go to school. On Tuesdays I have more than one thing to do. I have school choir in the morning and Elite dance practice after school. On Wednesdays I sometimes have newspaper club after school. On Thursdays I go to school, then to Elite dance practice, and to choir at church after dance. On Friday I have school choir practice again in the morning and school all day. On Saturdays I attend Praise dance practice. On Sundays I go to church and sometimes my dad or grandparents cooks something good to eat for lunch. As you can see, my life is really busy.

Thanksgiving Dog By: Kayleigh Smart

There once lived a dog, as small as can be, who had the best owners in town. One day the mom said, “This little dog is a spoiled little pup.” “But…” said the dog, “ I like being spoiled..” “No back talking,” said the dad, After all of this, they still gave him a feast on Thanksgiving Day. He had turkey pie and even some potato salad.

Should Schools Have Classes for Advanced Students?

By: Makyria Hardin I think schools should have classes for advanced students. I’m not saying that the other kids are stupid, but that some kids learn at a higher and faster level. These kids need to be able to learn as much as they can. They can learn more and go on to good schools and good colleges.

Cowboy Chronicle Fun By: Meena Morgan

Okay, fun writing? Sounds boring, huh? Well, it’s really not. In my opinion, it is awesome. Don’t you want your whole class reading what you wrote? It’s exciting to read each story and find out what will happen next. I like meeting new people in the club and talking about our writing. Next year, consider joining the newspaper club. It is fun, exciting, jouful, and most important – it is full of hope.

Simon Simmons And The Christmas Visit By: Jack Cunningham

It was a cold night, but not just any night; it was Christmas Eve. As the Simmons

family dreamed happy dreams, something was going on in their pantry. The masked man was sitting there eating their cookies for Santa. He was a small skinny little man. But the weirdest thing about him was that he wore a green suit with a pointed hat and pointed shoes. Simon Simmons was a very big fan of Santa and his home, the North Pole. Simon awoke to a ringing of the doorbell. “Who could that be?” he said aloud, even though he was the only one in his room. He went to the door, unlocked it, and opened it. And there, in front of him, was old St. Nicholas himself. Simon’s jaw dropped as he stared at the old, chubby man. After about a minute of awkward silence, Santa said, “Have you seen my elf?” Simon could not speak no matter how much he tried. “Hello? Simon!” Santa said as he waved his hand in front of his face. “N-N-No.” he finally stuttered. “Oh, well my elf tracker said that my elf was here.” Santa said as he pulled out his elf tracker and showed Simon. “See?” He was correct. The small screened showed a green dot right on Simon’s house. Still blown away, Simon said, “ You can come in and look, just be quiet.” “Oh, please! I sneak into millions of houses on Christmas Eve. I think I can sneak through the Simmons’ house,” he said as he strutted through the door. They walked down the hall and into the kitchen. They heard the bustling and ruffling of a chip bag in the pantry. “C’mon, let’s check it out.” Simon said, shocking himself. He acted so calmly around the King of Christmas. He pushed the concerning thought away. They were at the pantry door. Santa put his hand on the knob. He turned it to the left. He pulled it open and what was behind the door, was not what Simon thought an elf would look like. He wore the right clothes, but he also wore a red mask and had Cheeto and Dorito dust all over him. “Oh, hey boss.” The elf said in a raspy voice. “Rico! Get out of here! I should have known you would be eating!” Santa said. “And take that mask off! You are not Spiderman!” As they walked out, Santa told Simon, “Thanks Simon, you are now on the Nice List!” Simon grinned, and so did Santa. It was Christmas morning. The Simmons family was ecstatic! While Simon and his sister opened presents, he told his family about the strange dream he had last night. He explained the events that happened the night before. “That’s funny! I thought I heard the doorbell ring too,” his father said. Later, when Simon was almost done opening presents, he picked up a small box with red wrapping paper with Santa hats on it. He opened it, and inside he saw the watch he had wanted but had not told anyone about. Also, it had a note in it. Simon picked it up and read it: Here is your extra present for helping. Santa

Sticky Situation: My teacher made me sit at recess ,and I don’t want to be embarrassed. What should I do? Question submitted by: Eman Naseer Response From Mia Gaskin: It doesn’t matter if you have to sit out at recess. What is more important…your social life or your well being? Your well being is more important. Do you want to follow other people’s choices even if they are bad? I am pretty sure you would not want to do that if the other people’s choices would get you in trouble. The consequences will be horrible. So, don’t be embarrassed if you have to sit out at recess. You may learn a valuable lesson from it. Response From Gabby Vice: The truth is almost everybody has had to sit at recess at some time and they were embarrassed too. Don’t feel bad about it because you are not the only one. **

My friend Myah and I have some things in common, but we are also different. Myah’s favorite color is purple and mine is neon blue. I like dance and Myah likes soccer. Her favorite video game is FIFA Fifteen , but my favorite game is Minecraft. We both love the guitar. Myah and I can like different things but still be very good friends.

Rainy Days

By: Kennedy Leggett

What is the best way to spend a rainy day? I like to spend my

rainy day inside playing video games or watching TV. If you

like football, you can play Madden football video games on

rainy days. You will have the time of your life. Instead of

watching it rain, you can watch TV. Shows like Teen Titans Go

and Family Feud are very entertaining. The next time it rains,

why don’t you spend time watching your screen with a video

game or TV.

The Milo Story By: Elacya Simon

Once upon a time there a dog named Milo. He was as fast as a truck and as strong as a rat. One day Milo was so hungry he thought he could eat an elephant, so he went to find something to eat. Milo also had an amazing sense of smell. He could smell foods from a yard away! As he walked through the park, he caught the scent of a delicious bone somewhere near him. It was so close he could almost taste it. He searched for a second but couldn’t find it. Suddenly, a man as tall as the White House walked by him. The man was eating a chicken leg. Milo drooled so much from the thought of eating the chicken that it was as if a stream was flowing out of his mouth. The man laughed when he saw Milo and reached down to pet him on the head. He handed Milo the bone. Milo was so happy that he flew up and did the “whip” dance.

Favorite Parts of Stories

By: Grace Culpepper & Kyndal Kohnke

Kyndal and I read to a 1st grade class and two

kindergarten classes. In Mrs.Brennan’s class, I

read The Tooth Book and asked Jackson Zinger

what his favorite part of the book was. He said

he liked when the guy tried to undo the knots

with his teeth. Kyndal read Sam And The Firefly

and asked Berkli Weeks what her favorite part

of the book was. Berkli liked when the firefly did

all of his tricks. Next we read to Mrs.Lungaro’s

class. I read Bears On Wheels. Madline Newton

said her favorite part of the book was when

there were ten bears on one wheel. Kyndal read

It’s Not Easy Being Big and asked Cash Smith

what his favorite part of the book was. Cash

said his favorite part of the book was when

Elmo had a baseball. Finally, we read to

Mrs.Stulb’s class. I read The Nose Book and

asked Willie Dartez what his favorite part of the

book was. He said his favorite part of the book

was when the alligator had a long nose and

when the elephant broke the tree with its nose.

Kyndal read Oh, The Places You’ll Go and

asked Cooper Ledoux which was his favorite

part of the story. Cooper liked when the

character went flying in a hot air balloon. After

reading this, we hope next time you finish a

book, you will ask yourself: What was my

favorite part favorite part of this story?”

My Dad Growing Up By: Lisa Doan

My dad was born in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He grew up and was born in a little town called Tuy Hoa. As a child my dad played a game where you could use your finger to flick a ball to hit the one in front of it. My dad would also play soccer on the streets. That may not sound too safe , but at that time in Tuy Hoa there were not a lot of cars, just bicycles and scooters on the streets. During this time, there was TV, but children did not rely on TV. The televisions were black and white and didn’t have many shows for children. Electronics were uncommon in Vietnam. The war had a tremendous affect on my dad and his family. My dad would have to hide from bombs. He could hear the rockets flying, guns firing, and bombs exploding. I think that’s pretty scary! The children (my dad and his 5 siblings) would go to school each day from 7:00AM to 11:00AM on Mondays through Saturdays. After the war, 3 of the 7 children in the family(one born just days before the war ended) left for America with their mother to escape the communist who ruled North Vietnam. My dad was 8 years old when the war ended in 1975, but to this day he still remembers everything that happened to him in Vietnam.

The Holiday I Celebrate By: Ashiana Khan

Are you a Muslim or are you a different religion? Which holidays do you celebrate? I celebrate Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday. I will tell you about it. First we wake up around 6:30 AM, brush our teeth, and take a shower. You can wear whatever you want to wear, but if you are a girl, you need to wear a scarf to cover your head. After we are ready, we leave for the mosque. A man leads us in prayer there. After we pray, a man teaches us all about Muslim history. He also gives a speech. After the speech, everyone stands up and say “Happy Eid al-Fitr.” We then have a little snack and leave to go home.

Chess By: Kennedy Leggett

My favorite board game to play is chess. It requires you to think . Before you make a move, you have to think about what will happen next. It is also a game of war because you have to get your opponent to surrender their king for you to win. You can see why chess is my favorite game to play.

The 12 Naughty El ves

By: Kyndal Khonke

Once upon a time, there were 12 elves who were very naughty. Whenever Santa would give them a task,

they would never do it. One year Santa told the elves to go and wrap the gifts for all of the children

around the world. Instead of doing what Santa told them to do, they watched TV. Since they did not wrap

the gifts, Santa could not deliver the gifts to the good children around the world. These 12 elves had

ruined Christmas! At that point Santa had enough of their disobedience. He banned the 12 elves from the

north pole. Since they were fired, they moved to Alaska, and they never ruined Christmas again.

The Best Day Ever By: Glory Vouffo

Last year my dad took us to Gamestop to choose games. I chose NBA 2K 14. I played with my brother Alex. He won the first game and then I won 3 games. My cousin, Zarrel , came to visit, and we played all day long. We played so long that I did not want to go eat when my mom called me for dinner. I ate very fast because I wanted to keep playing. A Christmas Miracle By: Addyson Domingue

One Christmas day two kids were opening their presents when someone knocked on their door. Their mom and dad answered the door. They found a huge package outside of the door. So the two kids, Addyson and Brody, ran to the door and brought the package into the house. The package was addressed to Addyson and Brody so they opened it. They were surprised to find that there was nothing inside the box. The doorbell rang again. This time Addyson opened the door and saw the mailman standing there. He handed her a package and said, “This is for you.” When she looked up, he had disappeared! Once again the package was addressed to Addyson and Brody. They opened the package. This time a note fell out. The note said: Sorry about the first box! Hope you enjoy your gift! They were confused because they still saw NOTHING! They turned the note over. On the back of the note a new message was written. It said: Your gift is at the door. So Brody went to the door. When he opened the door, they were surprised to see their grandparents standing there. “You made it!” said Addyson “I thought you would not be able to come for Christmas this year.” Addyson and Brody hugged their grandparents and spent the rest of the day with them. They all had the best Christmas of their lives!

How To Decorate A Christmas Tree By: Ashiana Khan

1. You will need to set up your tree first. 2. You need at least 4 different boxes of

ornaments. I like to use red, green, pink, and blue ornaments to decorate.

3. Divide your tree into 4 different sections. Each section of the tree will have different colors of ornaments.

4. Put the red ornaments on one section. Then put the blue ornaments on another side. Turn your tree and add the pink ornaments. Then add the green ornaments to the last section of the tree.

5. Now your Christmas tree is done! Enjoy!

The Bad Twelth Elf

By: Meena Morgan

Oh how bad the little elf was. On Christmas day this tiny

elf stole the presents from all of the children. He blamed

the missing presents on the Grinch. He would also

sneak and eat all of Santa’s cookies and snacks. One

day Santa called all of the elves together to see which

elf had gotten fatter from eating all of his snacks. Santa

saw the cookie crumbs all over the shirt of the bad elf.

He gave this elf a new assignment – toilet cleaning. The

elf had no other choice other than to do what Santa said

to do, or he would be fired. But. as always, the bad elf

did as he pleased, so he was fired. The bad elf headed

to the south pole. There he met a polar bear who had a

passion for baking. The polar bear worked for Mrs.

Claus. He hired the bad elf to work for him. It turned out

to be a big mistake, so the bear sent him to Mrs. Claus.

She knew that deep down the bad elf really had

something good inside of him. She taught the elf what to

do and what not to do. She was pleased with how well

the little elf changed and grew to be good. All the little elf

had needed was for someone to care for him enough to

show him how to behave.

We Need More Recess! By: Mason Buckman

Students at Nelson Elementary do not get a lot of recess at all. Gonoodle and P.E. are physical activities, but students only go to P.E. class once and week, and some classes do not get to do Gonoodle very often. Our recess is around 20 minutes per day. If it is wet or rainy outside, most classes will do Gonoodle. It is a computerized game where students jump around and stretch.. Recess is a time when a child is free to run around, swing, talk, yell, and the list goes on! I did some research and elementary students need at least 30 minutes a day of physical activity. We only have 20 minutes of recess. Sometimes recess gets taken away if a student did not bring back graded papers, forgot to do Xtra Math, or did not do their homework. No recess break can lead to trouble because you do not get to let out any energy, you might start to talk or play with something in class Students need more recess time!
