Q.Welcome to the Harmony Grange Fair!

This year we at the Harmony Grange Fair cel-ebrate Harmony Livin! Farms, Family, 4-H andFun! We adopted this theme to celebrate theessence of our community of families and thelifestyle that has made this part of the worldhome for many of us. Our community has beensupported over the years by farmers working sunup to sun down and then some to provide notjust for their families and friends but for theworld as well. It took countless hours of plan-ning by our predecessors along with faith in God,to keep the family farms financially stable fromyear to year.

A program that went hand in hand to sup-port and teach beyond the home was our com-munity 4-H program. Through 4-H we all learnedin additional ways how to plan, budget and carryout fiscal plans. Whether it was in raising ouranimals for showing at the fair or raising moneyto support our chapter so we could have activi-ties and be rewarded for our labors. Our 4-Hwas an extension of our families in teachingsand beliefs.

So as we celebrate the accomplishments thisyear of these two projects, paving and purchas-ing ground, I reflect on our predecessors of thefair, our families teachings and our communitysupport for the fair. We sometimes do thingsthe old fashioned way around here, which is away that seems foreign to many folks today. Wework hard, we plan and we save for somethingin the future instead of going for that instantgratification.

I want to thank everyone that has been in-volved over the years of planning and saving andworking to make these projects come to fruition.I want to thank all of our guests who come tothe fair each year and support us with your pres-ence and most importantly your smiles! Thankyou as we continue to work to make improve-ments for the future of the Harmony GrangeFair!

With Gratitude, Shae

1. In selecting vegetables for exhibition, choose such specimens that would bring the highest mar-ket prices. Do not select the largest; select medium size specimens. Avoid mixing varieties.

2. These factors are generally used by an expert vegetable judge:a. Trueness to variety type. Pick the specimens from one variety.b. Uniformity in size, shape and color.e. Pick out a perfect specimen; then select others as similar to it as possible. Never mix spec-

imens or varying maturities.d. Protect from dirt, disease, infection and mechanical damage.

Select specimens that are perfect and show no blemishes of any kind. e. Condition and maturity. Be sure exhibits are of high quality. f. Potatoes should not be washed. Remove soil using a soft cloth or brush.g. Tomatoes should have stems removed. Carrots, beets, etc. should have top (leaves) re-

moved leaving about two inches of stem.3. Read premium material. Carefully follow all rules and regulations. If any entry calls for five

specimens, exhibit that number; do not enter four or six. Your exhibit will be disqualified for hav-ing a number of specimens other than that stipulated.

4. All entries must be grown by exhibitor.
