Hello Year 3,

I hope you all had a wonderful half term in the sunshine and are ready to conquer our new topic

of ‘It’s a Wonderful life’. In this topic we will combine our geography and science skills together to look at the world around us.

Today we will be looking at the different types of foods that humans need to keep heathy and

grow.

Start by having a discussion with someone at home:

Humans need food to keep them healthy.

Here are some reasons why we need food:

Food keeps us healthy and help us grow. Food gives us energy to be able to do things

during the day. Without proper nutrition, your body can’t survive.

When you eat a balanced diet, your body obtains the fuel and nutrients it needs to function properly.

In order for us to have a healthy balanced diet, it is really important that we eat foods from a range of different food groups.

There are 6 different food groups in total and each group has a special ‘job’ in our diet. Making sure we eat the right amount of each of these different food groups keeps us nice and healthy, allowing us to grow and gives us energy to do things during the day.

The 6 groups are:

Fruit and vegetables Bread, rice, potatoes & pasta (starchy foods) Milk and Dairy Meat, fish, eggs & beans (non-dairy products that have a good source of

protein) Oils and spreads Sugars (like chocolate, sweets and other foods high in sugar)

It’s important that we have some of all these food groups in each meal that we eat to keep a balanced diet. In order to help us do that, we can look at the

‘eat-well plate’. This plate has been designed to help us make good food choices and look after our body.

The ‘Eat-Well Plate’

Task 2: Right Year 3. I am faced with a problem and for your next task,

you’re going to help me. It’s time to get crafty and creative!

The other day I received an email from my friend Nosey Norman the

science investigator. I have attached Nosey Norman’s

letter for you to read below.I hope you can use your super science knowledge to help me and Norman

with this problem!

Your task:Design your own balanced meal,

including foods from all of the different food groups.

Draw your meal on your plate and then underneath, write what your

meal is and what foods there are from each of the food groups.

Sugars: Although not on the ‘eat well plate’, sugars are also an important part of our diet. They provide the body with energy, warmth and insulation around vital organs. However, to be healthy, we should only eat foods from this group in moderation.
