By Bev Greco CCSPCA Executive Director Well, yet another Mother’s Day has passed and still not the slightest acknowl- edgement of it from my crew of ingrates. This year my little family has been expanded by not just one, but two new additions. They are both less than a year old, so I wouldn’t expect them to know what the appropriate customs are, but you would think the older ones could have clued them in. I guess I can’t really complain though, as evidenced by my decision to take on two more charges. I love the daily rewards of “motherhood.” I do, however, have to remind myself of those joys some days. Instead of adopting more mature chil- dren, I opted for a pup and a kitten this time. I had decided that my household was becoming too sedate, too dull, too unadventuresome. Hmmmmph! As stated in a previous edition of this column, I was apparently suffering from some sort of post-traumatic stress disor- der from losing my last dog. What pos- sessed me to take on a couple of toddlers (who have now become rowdy teenagers) is beyond me! Don’t get me wrong, I love them dearly and would not trade them for the world, but all that was sedate has become unruly, all that was dull has become highly ani- mated and all that was unadventuresome has become a thrill a minute! I was trying to have a phone conversa- tion with my sister the other night and had to interrupt the call repeatedly to hol- ler out some admonition to the pup. On that particular evening alone, he chewed the insole of one of my shoes, rolled on a dead vole, drug out my highly prized Boyd’s Bear (that weighs twice as much as he does) trying to get it into his dog bed for a good chew, and as if this wasn’t enough for one day, his grand fete’ of the evening was to come tearing in the doggie door with a recently expired squir- rel and try to jump on the sofa with it. I have found that my reaction time has improved greatly in the past few months and, fortunately, I was able to catch him in mid leap and thus avoid dead rodent contamination on my furniture. My kitten, on the other hand, is two months older and much less challeng- ing. She considers it a per- sonal challenge to shred all my house plants, she insists on a 5 a.m. reveillie and she takes great plea- sure in antagonizing her brothers and sisters; but overall, she’s a good kid. Last year on Mother’s Day, I was bemoaning the fact that my little guy, at the ripe old age of 15ish, was pestering the neighbor dog and harassing the squirrels while I was out doing yard work. Having lost him to congestive heart failure back in October, I would give anything to have him here protecting me from those two terrible threats to the security of his yard. And that is exactly why I have two new additions. Pets are an incomparable joy in our lives. There is nothing so uncom- plicated as their love for us. Their antics, although challenging at times, are comi- cal and refreshing and will later become precious memories. It’s great to be a pet parent, even if you never get flowers for Mother’s Day. Shelter Needs Kitten chow, soft dog treats, hot dogs, cheese sticks or slices, canned chicken, minute rice, clay cat litter, bleach, dryer sheets, sponge mops, 6-inch plates, gift cards for grocery and hardware stores. Shelter Events Month of May: Jail House Rock — Spring your favorite cat out of the Joint for only $30! A selection of cats will be available for a reduced adoption fee of only $30. Also for the month of May: Beat The Heat! — Get your female cat spayed for only $45! Call 856-691-1500 or stop in for details and appointments. May 19th — Low Cost Vaccine Clinic from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the shelter, 1244 N. Delsea Drive, Vineland. All shots $15 each, rabies and distemper/Parvo for cats and dogs. Pets of the Week Cats Abby is a sweet, play- ful, lovable 6-week-old kitten. She is a perky little girl with lots of per- sonality. Abby has one eye that is lazy, and looks a little different, but it does not affect her at all. She is just as healthy and active as a kitten should be! Orange Kittens — These brothers are all looking for their forever homes! They are orange and white tabbies and they are all males. Jasper, Simba and Squirt are ready to go, neutered and up to date with shots. Lucy loves attention. She is 7 months old. She loves feeling snug in her box. Sadie came to us as an owner surren- der. Her owners were traveling for work and were not going to be home enough to properly care for her, so they decided that a new home would be better for her. Sadie is a loving girl who loves to sleep UNDER her blankets instead of on top of them. She lived in a home with small kids, other cats and dogs, so she’s fine with them and wouldn’t mind having a new home with any of them. Soldier was found at the NJ Veterans Memorial Home. He was skinny and hun- gry. His foster family nursed him back to health and he is ready for a forever home. Soldier is part Russian Blue (If not all) and has a lot of Russian Blue traits. He is a lit- tle shy around new people but will snuggle up next to you when he knows you. He is also negative for Feline FIV/Luek. Redmond is very loving and gentle. He is a people cat. He is about a year and a half old. Redmond has been at our shelter way too long. Won’t you give him a chance? Dogs Baby is a 2-year-old purebred lab. She is good with children and is good with other dogs. Baby is happy, very people-ori- ented and loves attention. She may need some basic doggy manners training, but this nice young dog is worth the time and effort. Baby is a true sweetheart that will steal your heart. Angel has come such a long way! She came to us in horrible condition, thin, most of her hair missing and her skin infected. She was quickly moved to foster care where she blossomed in personality and in health. She gained weight, her skin infection was treated and her fur grew back. Angel has a wonderful per- sonality. She is very loving and affection- ate, and makes a great companion. She is housebroken and crate-trained and is well behaved in her foster home. She is very playful with other dogs and would do best with a male with a similar ener- gy level. Angel is a bit much for cats, so a home without would be best. Angel deserves only the best after a past filled with neglect. She is waiting for her for- ever home. Could it be yours? Arista is a very nice, 2-year-old Shih Tzu. She is affectionate and sweet and gets along well with other dogs. Arista has a lifetime of love to give. Please con- sider opening your heart and your home to this nice young girl. Patience is a pretty little 2-year-old Beagle. She is a delicate girl, on the small side for a Beagle and just as cute as they come! Precious is active and lively and gets along well with other dogs. Please consider opening your heart and your home to Patience. Lila is a happy go lucky, “I love every- body” lab and shepherd mix. She is a great dog that just needs someone to step up and give her a second chance. She is fun and friendly and has years of love to give. Gaston is a very nice, 1-year-old Lhasa Apso. He is friendly and good-natured and gets along well with other dogs. Gaston is full of personality and has the funniest little face! Please consider becoming part of his happy ending.
