MISSION STATEMENT
We believe we are all sinners. It is not good behavior, the strength of our convictions or the correctness of our beliefs which saves us, but only the grace of God. The people of St. Ansgar are committed to sharing God’s love and forgiveness by welcoming and serving all people.

FAQ's For A New Pastor -
FAQ’s for the Pastor – What if the sermon
stirs up questions for me?
Good! Yes really, good! Sermons are invitations. God has gifted
us with a rich array of possible responses to what we hear from
the pulpit. Faith is developed not only by hearing the gospel, but
by wrestling with what it means. Doubt is normal, so consider
welcoming it as part of your faith formation. Perhaps doubt is like
a friend who lovingly nudges you to move forward.
23 Jesus said to him, “If you are able!—All things can be done for the
one who believes.” 24
Immediately the father of the child cried
out,“I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9: 23 – 24, NRSV)
Prayer time is essential for talking with God. This is
both speaking and listening to God, and typically not in that
order!
Be still, and know that I am God!
I am exalted among the nations,
I am exalted in the earth.”
(Psalm 46:10, NRSV)
Shared time spent serving God in our neighborhood,
participating in Bible study, and enjoying fellowship after worship
are opportunities to further conversations begun in the pulpit.
Also, I am here for you and happy to be a discussion partner.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, be bold! Use your Christian
imaginations to launch how you love and serve Christ
daily. Lean into God’s promises.
ST. ANSGAR WAS RECOGNIZED, AT OUR
JUNE SYNOD ASSEMBLY, FOR BEING ONE
OF THE TOP TWO GIVERS (PER CAPITA) IN
OUR REGION TO ELCA WORLD HUNGER.
PRAISE AND THANKS TO GOD
FOR YOUR GENEROSITY.
19
We are called to go forth and spread the good news of Jesus
Christ, our Lord and Savior. One of the best ways to share
your faith is to get involved with educating and being a good
example for today’s youth. St. Ansgar has upcoming events
this summer where your help is needed to “spread the good
news”.
During Wednesday nights in July the church will be
celebrating “Jesus in July”. And then during the first week
of August “Vacation Bible School” will be held. These two
events need adults to participate in the fun, laughter and the
sharing of their faith.
Please contact Pastor Kristen, Church Secretary
Donna at 319-232-2733, or any council member if you would
like to help in anyway.
“Let us focus on generosity, or returning God’s gifts
with increase, through the generous sharing of our
time, talent and treasure.”
If you don’t teach today’s
youth about Jesus, the
World will teach them
otherwise!
Seven ladies went to Country View June 15th to play Bingo with some of the residents. Its always an enjoyable time and the residents (and workers) appreciate it. Those attending were: Yvonne Overmyer and her friend Shirley, Sharon Schaffer, Sharon Johnson, Lou Isley, Roxanne Shankle and Betty Spence. They also delivered the items from St. Ansgar’s May Mission Cross.

WHAT LUTHER SAYS:
Sunday, July 24th,, PRAY FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Peace Prayer: "Together we pray with and for our sisters and
brothers in the Holy Land, lifting up prayers for the peace of
Jerusalem, of Israel, and of Palestine. Lord, where relationships are
broken, where people are isolated – from each other and also
from goods and services that alleviate suffering –and where
political processes meant to restore dignity produce cynicism and
anger, grant that your mercy and life-restoring steadfastness may
astound us, animating in us an eagerness to forgive and be
forgiven. Empower individuals, communities, and nations to be
generous and tenderhearted. Bless Palestinians and Israelis who
dare to take risks for peace. Guide and refresh all those who
accompany them. Amen."
GOD SPEAKS COMFORT
TO THE SOUL IN THE WORD
Apart from the word,
no comfort exists. It certainly
is not possible to comfort a
soul unless it hears the word
of its God. But where in all the
books is God’s Word except in
Scripture. What are we doing by reading
other books and letting this one lie? Other
volumes may indeed trouble and kill us, but
no other book than Scripture is able to com-
fort us. Scripture alone bears the title which
St. Paul gives it, a “Book of Comfort” which
can sustain the soul in all tribulations so that
it does not despair but keeps on hoping.

Pastor Kristen Wipperman
16 I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant
that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power
through his Spirit, 17
and that Christ may dwell in your hearts
through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. …
20 Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to ac-
complish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, 21
to
him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations,
forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:16 – 17, 20 – 21, NRSV)
Notes on Stewardship (diligent care of God’s creation) from
the Pastor – Each month we are taking some time to explore
what stewardship means when we expand upon its typical defini-
tion of how we make, save, and spend our money.
Good Stewardship = Healthy Practices in Caring for All of
God’s Creation
Here are six major facets to these healthy practices.
Social/Inter-personal well-being
Emotional well-being
Physical well-being
Financial well-being
Vocational well-being
Intellectual well-being
Diligent care of God’s creation calls for Social/Inter-personal
well-being We are created by God to be social beings, living in
community and instructed to help and love each other. We main-
tain social well-being through interaction, play and forgive-
ness. Take time to nurture your relationships with family, friends,
neighbors, congregation and co-workers.
From the gospel of Mark, the 31st chapter—
29 Jesus answered,
“The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30
you
shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your
soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31
The sec-
ond is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no
other commandment greater than these.” (NRSV)
29-31 Jesus said, “The first in importance is, ‘Listen, Israel: The Lord
your God is one; so love the Lord God with all your passion and
prayer and intelligence and energy.’ And here is the second: ‘Love
others as well as you love yourself.’ There is no other command-
ment that ranks with these.” (The Message)

CRAZY QUILTERS The Quilters get together on the second and fourth
Thursday of each month at 9:00 a.m. They gather their
supplies, cut fabric apart and then sew it back together as
they create stacks of quilts which are donated to Lutheran
World Relief to be given to those in need.
You don’t need to know how to sew to help out.
Just show up and someone will give you a job
to do!
The quilters are in need of fabric, old sheets
and batting they use in putting together
the quilts.
WIDOWS’ GROUP—The Widows’ Group
meet once a month for lunch at various
locations.
ALL WIDOWS ARE WELCOME!
(See Betty Spence for more
information.)
The men of St. Ansgar meet at 7:00 am every Wednesday at Southtown Restaurant for breakfast and fellowship.
Join them when you can… there is no meeting, no membership fees, no sign-up sheets, just an enjoyable time with friends!

COUNTY AUDITOR AND COMMISSIONER OF ELECTIONS
GRANT VEEDER
On behalf of Black Hawk County I want to extend our
appreciation to your organization for allowing your site to
serve as an official polling location for the 2016 June
Primary.
The amenities proved by your site provide crucial
accessibility for voters with disabilities. In addition, the extra
effort to designate voter parking helps provide equal voting
access for all voters of the precinct. Your cooperation and
support is very much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Karen Showalter
Elections Manager.
Dear Friends, We are especially grateful to your for your donation of paper products, shampoo and detergent valued at $150.00. Generosity such as yours fostered our beginnings, nurtured our growth and allowed us to continue to serve our communities in a variety of ways. Our services include care to those facing life-limiting illness, grief support for adults and children, palliative care and medical case management to those living with HIV or AIDS. With your support, we are committed to continue “Making Each Moment Matter” for many in need. Most gratefully Chris Olds, Development Director

Last week I attended a vigil at Lincoln Park, downtown
Waterloo. Like many of the vigils across the country,
this vigil was held in memory of the young people who
were shot in Orlando, Florida.
As each deceased person’s name was read, I felt my
heart becoming heavier. I was sad. In the aftermath of
our nation’s worst mass shooting, we heard much of the
same rhetoric we’ve heard before. Yet, this time we wit-
nessed something new: a rebellion (of sorts) against mo-
ments of silence and praying for the victims. What?
Sending our love and prayers for those in pain is our “go
to mechanism,” right?
While I will not stop praying, I’m right there with the
people who no longer want to stay silent. It’s time to
speak up for what you believe in; it’s time to share your
love, kindness and acceptance. It’s time to be tolerant of
those who are different from us.
As we prepare for “Jesus in July”, St. Ansgar is in the
right place, at the right time, to call people in. Let’s
work together to share Jesus’ love, accept those who are
different from us and speak up for those who have been
silenced.
After all, Jesus has a great message to share and
St. Ansgar has the great people to share his message.

July 2016 GOD’S WORK. OUR HANDS.
As a social ministry organization of the ELCA, Lutheran Services in
Iowa (LSI) is so thankful for your partnership in ministry! We give
special thanks for the many congregations making LSI the focus of
their “God’s work. Our hands.” projects.
Past “God’s work. Our hands.” projects have included donations of
tools for dads enrolled in our early childhood programs, plus
children’s books, towel bundles, school supplies and backpacks. LSI
has also been blessed to receive “noisy” offerings, special offerings
and proceeds from yard work or luncheons. Some Sunday School
classes and youth groups have also encouraged youth at LSI’s Beloit
and Bremwood Residential Treatment Centers through quilts and
letters.
We thank you for your witness of God’s love and your service! If you
are interested in ministering to those served by LSI and would like to
know more about current needs, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI
director of philanthropy and church relations, at
Finding Help and Hope
Bernie’s daughter-in-law walked into her house and set her new baby
on the living room sofa. She told Bernie the baby was "a mistake" and
that she couldn't parent him. She never returned. At age 50, Bernie
became a mom to her 2-month-old grandson, Bryce. Bernie's son—the
baby's biological father—had medical and mental health issues that
left him unable to care for the child.
When Bryce was young, he was diagnosed with ADHD, ODD
(Oppositional Defiant Disorder), fetal drug and alcohol syndrome,
mental retardation, and partial bipolar disorder. As he grew older,
Bryce began to develop anger issues. Bernie knew he was struggling,
so she reached out to LSI.
Soon, Bryce began receiving regular home visits from a Behavioral
Health Intervention Services worker, who coached Bryce on anger
management. Bryce also began seeing an LSI therapist.

Today, Bryce is 15 years old. He attends special education classes,
and is doing wonderfully. When he is upset, he reaches out to his LSI
therapist for help. Bryce still struggles with anger, but Bernie and his
LSI support team work together to meet Bryce where he is.
"I want to thank each and every one of our workers from LSI," Bernie
says. "They are doing marvelous work with him."
And thanks to LSI donors, Bryce receives the help, hope, and support
he needs.
