My friend, let me tell you the story of some important parts of my life.

Twenty years ago, it was a day before the school year started, (11/26/1!), "

arri#ed at Zewaka, my hostel. " still remember how e$cited " was. My heart was

beating fast thin%ing of how " would create newest, brightest future for myself.

&$cept some information " gathered from my senior students and two songs such

as Takkatho Kyaung Ka Ngwela Min and Mya Kyun Nyo Nyo " memori'ed about

college life ust before diamond ubilee of angon *ni#ersity, " %new nothing. " wasust a #illage boy.

My friend, " want to tal% about what happened on the way to uni#ersity.

There were uni#ersity students spending their time together playing po%er on the

ship from Wakema to angon. " was with my uncle who was sending me to the

uni#ersity. +s " %new my uncle would not li%e of any form of gambling, " stayed

away from the group when my uncle was not asleep. ut at night, when he went to

bed, " could not help myself. -o, " went and played the po%er with the spending

money my parents ga#e me for my first month in uni#ersity ( %yats).

*nfortunately, " lost half of it. " gambled blindly the remaining half in one stro%e,then " won again. &ssentially, " lost half, " won bac%, " lost half again and so on for

four of fi#e rounds. " was luc%y that at the end, " had e$actly the same amount "

started. " was thin%ing, if e#er the house ta%e all in any of the round, " would ha#e

to pac% up and go bac% home. " guess as my %arma had it, " got all my money to

start my ourney to the forest of trouble and happiness, my life as a college student.

My friend, after my uncle left me at the hostel, " cleaned my room and made

friends with a gang of students from 0egu from neigboring rooms. They were Min

Min (who would become famous as Boeboegyi), Thant aw win, Maung Maung

Myint -oe, +ung -oe in from Latputta, -aw Myat +ung from Sittwe, +ung -an3twe from Hinthada, aw Myo win from Kyauk Tan, so on. "n the e#ening, we all

decided to go to "nnya la%e. 4hen we came down from the hostel for the wal%, the

guard stopped -aw Myat +ung, as he thought he was illegally transpassing the

hostel. 4hen -aw Myat +ung arri#ed at the hostel in the morning, he had tied his

hair up and put a hat on. ut when he came down that e#ening he let his hair

down. -o, the guard did not recogni'e him and thought that he was a thug

transpassing the hostel. 4e all had to #ouch for him. That was my #ery first

remembrance.

My friend, the second thing " remember is the trip to 572 (5egional ollege2) by the residents of ewa%a two days later. 4e purposely went there by a bus. 4e

%new that we needed to ta%e 8o. 9! or 8o. ! bus to 572, it would be three stops

(from Innlay hostel 7 our bus stop, ne$t stop Arr Kaar (:ym), then Ingin, and

finally Kyaung Kawe) from our hostel. Therefore, after school, instead of alighting

at Innlaystop, we continued to Kaung Kawestop. 4e came into 572, loo%ed at all

the latest fashion of angon at 572 and #isited e#erywhere at #ery new ;*ni#ersity

of omputer -cience

My friend, when the sun was down and all the female hostels were loc%ed

down, Thaminecampus became our little pri#ate world for males only. 4e all too%

post in front of "andama(mums), Tharaphi, Hnini(rose), Inginand Khattafemale

hostels, where &conomy and +-* (angon +rt and -cience *ni#ersity) students

li#e, to start our entertainment programs. There were at least three groups of

entertainers in front of each of these hostels at a time. =n the other hand, there

rarely were anybody playing guitar in front of the Tha#in(orchid) hostel, where "T

female students li#ed. The lo#ely thing is that we all too% in turn singing and

playing guitar without needing any arrangement or any argument between groups

some who were gambling. My friend, as you see, each room had their own group of

people with their own interest.

My friend, around FD pm, when the dining room was closed, hinese

mo#ies had o#er and news was broadcasting on TE, some gentlemen from Innlay

hostel would come to Zewaka, to find the bra#e ones to go with them for their

battle. Then that group would go to Sintgu hostel to collaborate with lionhearted

soldiers there. +fter all of us, protectors of the Thamine campus were ready, we

would go and do our enormous responsibility as a member of Thaminecampus to

fried breadstic% #ery popular as brea%fast food in Myanmar. 4hene#er we were

studying #ery hard for e$ams or somebody won the po%er game and wishing to go

for a mid7night snac%, we would #enture out to this little shop. This place ser#ed

the best mid7night snac% for uni#ersity students li%e us. The shop was first started

as a wholesale shop to prepare and distribute to other coffee shops. ut more and

more students became their loyal customers and they started selling bean curry

which went really well with $i Kyar Kway.

My friend, we would try to compete in ordering and fight for food when it

came. =ur food was ser#ed on a piece of newspaper. Those hot and crispy

breadstic%s were so delicious. My friend, " feel li%e " want some right now.

My friend, 16 student uprising was the first historical student mo#ement

after 1FF uprising which shoo% the throne of the Junta. "t was also the mo#ement

which would change the path of our li#es. 4hile the school was closed down by the

military go#ernment, some started business and some wor%ed as tutors for high

school students. +s you %now, we all had to start learning the way of the world and

wor%ing for our li#elihood e#en if we were not fully eBuipped for that.

My friend, " started wor%ing as a tutor in my hometown. +t the beginning of

the year of 1F, " became a study guide at ++ &ducational oarding school. y

1C, our school "T (angon "nstitute of Technology) was mo#ed to Ministry of

-cience and Technology and renamed it as T* (angon Technological *ni#ersity).

"nstead of reopening the school for engineering students, it was used as short term

e#ening training school. 4e were ignorant about how Junta had planned to

decimate our engineering school due to us, engineering students being #ery acti#e

in politics at that time.

My friend, in 1F, engineering school was reopened for one le#el at a time.

Hinal year le#el was opened for ten days (ten days of attending classes, fi#e days of

learning and one wee% of e$am for a year worth of education). Then, fourth and

fifth years were reopened. +fter that, in the middle of +ugust, first, second and

third years were reopened. " was #ery happy that " was bac% at the shade of

Zewaka hostel. +s a second year student, the result of this e$am would decide

which engineering maor " would be eligible for. " planned to wor% #ery hard to get

into the engineering maor " wanted.

My friend, but ust after " arri#ed at the hostel and went down to get the

schedule, " reali'ed that our school schedule had been shortened. :o#ernment had

reduced the school opening days by se#en days out of e$isting plan of ten days. The

reason was they wanted to ma%e sure that no engineering school would be opened,

when 8@ (8ational eague for @emocracy) party started their ri#al congress. My

friend, " was so de#astated. 4e were only a pawn which they did not mind letting it

go in their political game. "t seems that education of future leaders of the country

did not seem to matter much to the military go#ernment.

My friend, we fought hard to get bac% at least to the same length of school

opening time as we had. My friend, " do not remember e#erything in detail. -o, " will

tell you as far as " remember. 4e started our meeting at the small ground between

Sintguand &ubyhostels. Then, it was mo#ed to room number 1 where +ung -an

3twe and Min Min stayed. y the way, at that time, Thant aw win and " stayed

in room 12F. +s we were meeting without the %nowledge of the warden of the

hostel, we loc%ed the door from outside and got into room 1 one by one

surreptitiously through the #eranda. =ne of us had to be in loo% out to signal us if

there was some teachers passing through the corridor. -tudents from all the

hostels came to the room. There were so many people in the small room that if

someone passed through the corridor in front of the room, we could feel the

warmth on our foot.

"n short, my friend, hostel students and day students whoe#er wanted to

participate signed the letter reBuesting to put the e$am date bac% as pre#ious

schedule. "f " remember correctly, the demand we had in 1F is not related to any

political #iew and purely for the right to education.

My friend, after we got almost e#erybodyyin -oe, who wor%ed so tirelessly to protect us from getting into big trouble at

16 uprising. * >yin -oe had retired due to our uprising and now we were in the

hand of Maung Thar Soe(a person who was worse than the one before).

My friend, as " felt so bad, " stood up and as%ed him respectfully. ;@ear

Sayargyi, " saw that there are a lot of ad#ertisements for diploma gi#ing e#ening

training school. "f the school can be used to open more and more e#ening training

classes li%e that, but why are we getting throw out of our school so fast.< 3e replied

the way school is ma%ing money and than%s to that the school can pay more salary

+ny way, when " got to (ak Kyin street, " sweetly tal%ed my mother into

lea#ing me at angon and going bac% home. Then " went and stayed at the hostel

across from Nawarat3otel. " li#ed there for a few days when " was ta%ing my first

year e$ams. " felt that " died from hea#en and reborn at hell.

That e#ening, " went to Thamine unction to ha#e dinner. @ue to stress, "

could not eat much. " tried to study but " could not concentrate either. -itting at

"nsein and !arami unction, " could not stop worriedly loo%ing at -4+T team

bloc%ing Thaminecampus. " called Min Min who went bac% to !egu. 3e encouraged

me not to worry and he said that he would be bac% tomorrow and we could stay at

the same place.

=n the morning of !th of -eptember, Maung Maung Myint -oe and Min Min

came bac% from 0egu. Thant aw win and Myo Min =o left the school hostel with

their own #olition. +ll of them came and got me and we all mo#ed to Maung

Maung

+round 1F =ctober 2, our second year grades were out. +fter one wee% "

went bac% to Wakema. +fter " got bac%, " continued teaching as pri#ate tutor. +fter

wor%ing the whole wee%, on 1/8o#/1F, there were no classes that night, " went

to see a mo#ie at a friend

+fter the ta$i ride, we arri#ed at "nsein prison. "nsein prison has a smaller

pri#ate prison in the premises. 4e went in through two huge doors which is called

Htaung Bu Wa (the main gate of the prison). They as%ed me to ta%e off watch,

money, bac%pac% and recorded them. They also searched my whole body and wrote

down three distinct mar%ings such as scars and moles. These mar%ings will be

used to identify a person when he/she is free. +fter that, the prison warden pointed

to a place and as%ed me to go and sit. 4hen " tried to sit down on a seat near

where he pointed, he shouted me and said that he was ordering me to sit on the

floor, not on the seat. " was humiliated and felt #ery small and insignificant. ut "

tried to control myself to pretend that " was o%.

-oon, somebody came to me with a white bag which loo%ed li%e a big pillow

case and co#ered my face. " could not see anything and " felt li%e " got disconnected

from the world. Then " heard the door opened. They as%ed me to stand up, wal%ed

to the left for ten steps, to the front for fi#e steps, turned to the right for 9! degree

and wal%ed for three steps then as%ed me to ump o#er the drainage of two feet and

so on. (There was no drainage in that area. They ust as%ed me to test whether "

followed their command and to test whether they could control me as they wished.)

This way, they brought me into a building.

4hen " entered inside, they too% off the head co#er, wrapped my eyes with

blac% cloth and tied it at the bac% of my head. The inter#al between the head co#er

too% off and eyes wrapping was #ery fast. " could not ha#e a chance to see anything

but e$periencing only a sudden brightness. +fter a while, they started Buestioning

me. " had to sit with four legged seat which was so high that " could not touch my

feet to the ground. The wooden plate on the legs was about fi#e inches sBuare with

sharp edges. The four legs were purposely made not to be in the same height so

that it would not be stable while sitting. " felt li%e feather in the wind sitting on the

unstable seat with feet not touching to the ground. My butt was hurting because of

the sharp edges too. " guessed " was being started Buestioning at about 1 am.

There were a #ariety of Buestions continuously being as%ed. " was also

threated to be thrown into deep canyon if " did not answer correctly. " tried to calm

down myself Buic%ly from being my mind disordered due to an$iety and fear. My

whole body was sweating and sweat drops were dripping down from my body. "

organi'ed my mind in order to recogni'e the pre#ious answers to be able to connect

to the ne$t answers since the answers were all connected. *nder the wrapping

cloth, the interrogator could not see my eyes which was good for me to recogni'e

and answer the Buestions. " memori'ed the pre#ious answer and repeated e$actly

the same answer when they as%ed the same Buestion again. " answered the

Buestions by resembling myself in my mind as a simple student whose priority was

to be a top one during his education ourney. +nd he had been doing things

wrongly due to uncontrollable mind.

The interrogator changed hourly. They as%ed about my childhood, my dating

as a teenager and boycotting. " was the only one answering all those Buestions

although the interrogators were changing one after another. " got to %now that they

were interrogating other students too. @uring the interchange period between the

two interrogators, there was no napping or resting time for me. " had to sing

instead. " was not allowed to drin% water but " was allowed to urinate if " needed to.

" had to follow the instruction to go for urinating, ;to wal% three steps forward and

turn right to degree then unco#er the sarong to urinate
