From the Rev. Deacon Miguel Robles

St. Patrick Catholic Church | 5

Saint Stephen - Deacon [Jesus] told his disciples: “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Pray therefore the owner of the harvest to send workers to gather his harvest” (Mt. 9; 37-38) The whole Church must pray to God, as Jesus asked his disciples and the Holy Spirit will bring forth the charisms and ministers to direct it and give it his Word and the Eucharist. In the Acts of the Apostles it is narrated: In those days as the number of the disciples was increasing, there were complaints from the Hellenists against the Hebrews, because according to them their widows were treated with negligence in the daily distribution. (Acts 6:1) Unprotected widows said that in the distribution of food, those who were from Israel were given more preference than the poor from abroad. The twelve gathered the assembly of the disciples and said to them: “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Therefore, brothers, choose seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom,

whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” (Acts 6:2-4) A year after the death and resurrection of Jesus, the community had grown so much that the apostles, in order not to give up their preaching work, entrusted the service of the poor to seven ministers of charity called deacons (which means "helper” or "servant", and who are in the third degree in the priestly order). “The whole assembly agreed and elected Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmeneas, and Nicholas of Antioch. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid hands on them.” (Heb. 6:5-6) Stephen was a deacon in the early Church of Jerusalem, who aroused the enmity of members of various synagogues, due to his wonderful teachings of Christianity. He was accused of blasphemy and sentenced to death by stoning. Stephen knew that his words would lead him to death, but he could not shut up the truth! His martyrdom was witnessed by Saul of Tarsus, a Pharisee who would later become a follower of Jesus and known as Saint Paul the Apostle. Saint Stephen is called "protomartyr" because he had the honour of

being the first martyr who shed his blood for proclaiming his faith in Jesus Christ. Saint Stephen spoke of Jesus Christ with a Spirit so wise that it won hearts and the enemies of faith could not face it. Everyone in the court, looking at him, saw that his face shone like that of an angel. For that reason, they let him speak, and Stephen delivered a powerful speech recalling the history of Israel. Read Acts 7:1-53 This narrative of the Acts of the Apostles, about the need for help to carry the ministry entrusted by Jesus, to the widows, the helpless, the poor and sinners, was at that time resolved with the election of those Deacons, now all Saints. I have taken Holy Stephen as an example of Faith and the Holy Spirit, which comes as an inspiration to anyone who wishes to serve God our Lord through his church. Saint Stephen gives us the opportunity to define and speak a little more about the order of the diaconate in the world and in our Diocese. [To be continued] Light and Salt

San Esteban - Diacono

(He. 6:2-4)

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of

our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical

suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your

mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole

and free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health

and deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask

this through our Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen!
