For the Silent Auction. Please consider making a donation of bonsai related items to the club for inclusion in the silent auction.
All proceeds from these items will be donated to the club. Alternatively, you may sell up to 5 items in the silent auction with 15%
of the proceeds going to PSBA as a donation. There will be no charge for reserves that are not met in the silent auction; however,
silent auction reserves cannot exceed $100 per item. Please bring silent auction items on the day of the auction by noon, get a
seller/buyer number, and fill out the form (see below) with a description of each item, the reserve price if applicable, the buy it
now price and your name and seller number. This information will be transferred to the bidding sheet by the auction organizers.
For the Live Auction. We will have up to 80 trees and 3 viewing stones in the live auction. We are accepting no more than 5 live
auction items per club member. Please note that 15% of the final auction price will be retained by the club as a donation. You
may set a reserve price for your tree, but you will need to make a $15 donation to the club if your tree does not meet the reserve
price (this does not apply to auction viewing stones). You will be expected to get your live auction trees to the Pac Rim lower
greenhouse area by noon on Friday June 6. If you are coming from out of town or you cannot get them there by Friday, let Linda
[email protected] know. Make sure trees are labeled with your name and species name on a water proof label affixed to the
tree. As a live auction seller, you will be assigned a seller number, so when you arrive at the auction, ask the registrar for that
number. That will be your number for your buying and selling at the auction.
Those of you who wish to submit trees for the live auction may do so by e-mailing Doug Bradley ([email protected]) and/
or Linda Breeden at ([email protected]). Please also submit a short description of the tree, including any outstanding
characteristics, such as age, where collected, how long in bonsai training, pot details, etc. Photos would also be helpful and may
be used to advertise the event. Live auction tree details MUST BE SUBMITTED before May 23th. Please note that the live
auction is filled on a first come first served basis.
If you plan to bring items for the silent auction, please fill out this form and bring it by 11 am to the Pacific
Rim along with your item(s) for the silent auction.

Free Viewing Stone Show
Now through June 11
Lofty mountain ranges. Ocean tide pools and coastal outcroppings. A waterfall pouring
down a steep peak. Stately arch formations. It’s amazing the different shapes that stones can take
when they are exposed to rushing water, sand and wind for thousands of years
These and other stones are included in the Viewing Stones Interest Group’s Stone Images V
show at the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection in Federal Way. The show runs through June 11 and is
open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
The surfaces of viewing stones also can reveal unexpected surprises. This year’s show of
more than 30 different stones also includes stones with a whale and another with a baby dragon
affixed to their surface. Other stones depict a limb of a weeping cherry in bloom and a full moon.
And for animal lovers there is even a stone that resembles a bison.
Stones for this year’s show were selected by a three-person panel made up of David DeGroot,
Howard Miller and Rick Klauber. Edd Kuehn and Patrick Metiva designed the show.
The Viewing Stone Interest Group is affiliated with PSBA and people interested in learning
more about this art form or going on a collecting trip to find stones are always welcome. Collecting
trips probably will start in July, once our perpetual rainy season finally ends and water levels drop in
Washington streams and rivers. For more information about the group please contact Edd Kuehn

Now is the Time: April 2014 By Ken Wassum
There never seems to be any shortage of work to do on my trees. I recently spent a couple days with
my teacher, Boon Manakitivipart, and as always learned a lot. We worked on both deciduous and
pines, thinning them, wiring and candle pruning. This trident maple has an interesting, gnarly trunk
that has decent movement and lots of branches.
The first thing to do was to thin it out and make some branch selections (left). When I repot I will
rotate the tree a bit counter-clockwise, for a slightly better front (right).
Next came a cork-bark black pine that I have been working on for several years now. It is a vigorous
tree and always seems to respond well to candle pruning and thinning, which is exactly what we did.
Actually, to be completely honest, the winter weather played a role in the thinning process. In
December we had some strong winds down in the south sound and the tree blew off the bench and
landed upside down. The top half of the tree broke but I was able to salvage most of it with some
quick wiring and cut paste, but I did lose a portion on the left-front of the tree.
Close-up of the tree before candle pruning and thinning:
And after candle pruning with just the one candle remaining!
And here is a shot of the one candle left on the tree, which will be the new top in a
couple years!
Page 6
After-care for the maple will include regular feeding to continue to develop the
branch structure. The tree is not in a refinement stage yet, so fertilizer is needed.
After-care for the pine will be to not feed it again for a couple months while the
new buds emerge from the pruned candles. The pine is in a refinement stage,
and this approach will help to keep the needles in scale with the size of the tree.
By fall the tree will be full of lush new needles and may be ready to show in a
year or two. Have fun!

Bonsai Tip By Margaret Holton
Several years ago I bought from a catalog some pieces of a flat substance, mesh with
a puffy plastic overlay, to keep things like bonsai from skittering around in the back
of the car. Last month, as I was taking out my little cart to transport a couple of
bonsai, I grabbed a couple of those pieces to use on the cart; one beneath the
improvised deck and one on top. They worked beautifully, up and down hills and
curbs. I've subsequently found the stuff in rolls in stores. It's called tool box drawer
liner at Lowe's and extra grip shelf liner at Storables.

Spring Show Report
By Pat Negron
I want to thank everyone who helped with setup of the show, with the exhibit of their trees and with the take down
and clean up of everything. Thanks to all helpers as you know we cannot do anything without the volunteers of
PSBA. David was very pleased with all those who helped him with the exhibit area, and with the cleanup. He said
they were all a great help. Since this was our first annual show of bonsai by members of PSBA at Pacific Rim
Bonsai, I think it was as successful as it could be since we did it so early in May and many members did not have
their best trees in good form to put in the exhibit. I want to especially thank David DeGroot for all his help. We
could not have had our show without your help, David. As a side note, we made around $400 on plant
sales. Sincerely, thanks to all. (Pictures are from the show.)
