Soulja boy – crank that

9 Frame analysis

Page 2: 9frame analysis

This shot is taken at 0:22 when you are first shown the singer of the song.

There is a long shot of his figure to help promote the clothing brand he was trying to advertise for himself.

The lighting used brings out the main singer because the people in the background are noticeable but you can not see them very well – there for the attention is drawn fully to the center of the screen.

Before this shot is shown, the lyrics say “Soulja boy tell ‘um” and then Soulja boy is shown on screen. Then his lyrics begin.

The editing on this shot shows that the record label have blurred out any other promotional labels that may have been on the clothing.

Shot one

Page 3: 9frame analysis

This shot was taken from the video at 0:24 where the internet is brought into context

The fact the internet is used, this also represents the fact that the celebrity is trying to promote the song even further as shown in the shot before.

The writing on the chat pop up says “This is Mr Collipark, I want to sort you a record deal” and then the viewer is expected to think that Soulja Boy got famous because of his internet setup.

This shot itself shows some form of prop considering the videos in the background are of young people doing Soulja Boys dance and this suggests that this is what Mr Collipark had found online.

The angle seems to be a Point Of View shot.

Shot 2

This shot was taken at 1:02

This is a medium-long shot which shows what the character is wearing.

At this point in the song, the lyrics say “Super man that oohhhh” and then this man wearing a super man suit comes on the screen for around 3seconds.

The editing on this video shows that the record label have blurred out the “S” logo off the superman suit to stop promoting other businesses.

This shot is taken at 1:29 The fact that people are dancing

with him on this shot, it shows that the record label Mr Callipark had offered has helped promote his dance and his music. It shows that he is getting more famous and more appreciated by his fans. This is the first song/video that Soulja Boy had made.

The long shot again is trying to show what the singer/dancer are wearing. The people in the background are wearing t-shirts saying “soulja boy” which suggests that they are followers of him. The fact the main singer is in his own clothes and isn’t mimicking the others shows the viewer that he is more superior throughout the video.

The guy next to him is his friend in real life as shown on other videos from Soulja Boy and he has a small part in the song later on in the video.

Shot 5

This shot is taken at 1:52 This shot adds humor to the music

video. The two people in the picture are old people that struggle to walk to the park bench but they eventually stand up and start dancing to the ‘Soulja Boy Dance’ and it makes the viewer believe that the music also appeals to the older generation – which of course, rap doesn’t tend to do. Which is why this adds humor to the music video.

The mid-shot here is used to show the expressions on the old woman's face – she looks happy. Which sets a happy atmosphere towards the music video and this helps emphasize the style of song.

SHOT 7

This shot was taken at 2:13. This shot is after the scene when

the old people are dancing to Soulja Boy’s song. The expression on his face suggests that he is confused as to why old people are enjoying the song.

This also adds humor to the video because he represents the natural reaction of the viewer and you are made to side with him.

The fact this man has put his head out of the car suggests that this situation is of high importance because he is supposed to be a dominant and powerful man, something important would need to take place in order for him to pay attention to it.

SHOT 8

This shot was taken at 2:39 This shot is important in this

particular video because it fits with the story line of the video. The moral was that Soulja Boy gets a recording contact and this shot shows that he has succeeded in what the aim was to do.

The fact a mid shot was used shows the viewer clearly that the two people get along considering they’re both smiling and they’re shaking hands to show each other that they are welcome in their presences.

There isn’t much editing in these shots apart from the obvious lighting techniques used to make the props and the people stand out.

The clothing of the two people helps promote their different personalities.

Black – serious, professional. White – laid back, confident.

SHOT 9

This shot was taken at the end of the video at 3:57/4:00

This image is a close up of Soulja Boys glasses with his name on them to make sure that the viewer remembers the name.

The hat and the hood is white throughout the whole of the video to help him stand out from the rest of the crowd.

The editing here is naturally a whole shot then the screen gets smaller and smaller to make you focus on this one image before the video ends.

The fact he has his head down suggests mystery and suspicion as to what will happen next, in this case, it suggests there will be another Soulja Boy video.
