How to Add New Songs to the SongbookThis songbook exists because people like you brought in songs they found on the Internetand printed out. We hope you might also bring in some songs. Here are some hints onhow to successfully get a song into the songbook.

Choose a song Deople are likely to know. Classic rock is a fairly safe bet, since these songs have been on the radio and on TV and in movies fordecades.

Prepare to invest at least 60 minutes in making somethingyou can share withthe gro,q,. Why? Because lyrics and chords on the Internet are often wrong, and ittakes lime Wftr then Also: it takes time to squeeze it into 1-2pages and make 10copies. Ideally, your son2 will fit on ONE Dage. If it takes three or more pages, it’s just too long,so fix the formatting. (But don’t try to save space by putting chord changes on just one verse.)

You’ll need a 3-ring HOLE PUNCH so your song will go into the ring-binders we usefor the songbook. Yes, a hole punch just like the one at the place where you work, andthe ones Kinkos/Fedex lets customers use. The cheap ones cost maybe $3.

SO, YOU HAVE PICKED OUT A SONG...

Most of us don’t know the song perfectly, so we turn to the Internet.

Find the chords and lyrics on the Internet Often typing “guitar chords [name ofsong]” or “howto play [name of song]” into a google search will lead you to some version of the song.Technically, we don’t use guitar ~, although what you find might be labeled as “tab”. We usechords and lyrics.

Listen to the original recording on youtube.com. Sometimes they have the written lyrics in thevidea Youtube often has tutorials on how to play songs, too.

Print out the version you find. Play through it lift sounds right, then read the printout whilelistening to the original recording. OFTEN you discover mistakes. There are often differentversions of the same song available, sometimes within the same website, sometimes on differentwebsites.

FIX THE MISTAICES! Seriously! Fix the wrong lyrics. Fix chords written in the wrong place(or plain old wrong chords). This might involve a fair amount of typing.

Now, consider whether this is a song you can teach to five beginning guitar players whomight not know the song well.

lithe chords are difficult, you can adjust the key. For example, a song in the Key ofFwill probably use both F and B-fiat, which are hard chords for beginners. Ifyou move the keydown a half.step to the Key ofE, the song will use B and A (instead ofF and B-fiat), chordswhich are much easier for beginners. Think about this betbre you print out ten copies of the songand bring it to the group.

STANDARD BLUES PATTERNS

“12 Ba? means “twelve measures”.

One measure is typically four beats.

If you have learned a little music theory, the pattern is

i--IV--I--V--1VIV

(in other words, “one four one five four one five).

Then sequence can be repeated as long as desired. Lather, rinse, repeat

In many cases, the guitar emphasizes beats two and four (in some cases being

completely silent on beats one and three). The first chord is played for four

measures, the second is played for two measures, and so on as indicated. If there’s

nothing in parentheses, then play the chord for just one measure.

The final chord of the sequence is called “the turnaround” because after that chord,

you turn around, go back to the beginning, and start the sequence again. The

turnaround is often played louder or with more energy to make sure everyone

knows that it is time to start a new sequence.

It’s quite common to play seventh (aka “dominant seventh) chords in the chord

sequence. It is very common to play the V chord as V7. In slow jazzy or fast flunky

strum patterns, sometimes ALL of the chords are played as 7ths.

C F F Fm

CWhen you were here before,

Ecouldn’t look you in the eye.

FYou’re just like an angel,

Fmyour skin makes me cry.

CYou float like a feather,

Ein a beautiful world

FI wish I was special,

Fmyou’re so fucking special.

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.What the hell am I doing here?I don’t belong here.

I don’t care if it hurts,I want to have control.I want a perfect body,I want a perfect soul.I want you to notice,when I’m not around.You’re so fucking special,I wish I was special.

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.What the hell am I doing here?.I don’t belong here

She’s running out the door, she’s running, she run, run, run, run, run.

Whatever makes you happy, whatever you want. You’re so fucking special,I wish I was special,
