  • ACOMPARATIVE DICTIONARY

    OF THEPWO KAREN DIALECT

    PART IIENGLISH - PWO KAREN

    COMPILED BY THEREV. W. C. B. PURSER, M. A.,

    ANDSAYA TUN AUNG.

    RANGOON:AMERICAN BAPTIST MISSION PRESS,

    F. D. BINNEY, SUPT.1920.

  • PREFACEA dictionary must be regarded as belonging to the category of useful, rather than of ornamental things. Which being so, it is not unlikely that there may be those who will want to know what justification there can be for the publication of the present volumes. What useful purpose, it may be asked, can be served by a dictionary of a dialect at once so unimportant, and so unstable as Pwo Karen?

With regard to the matter of importance, it cannot be fairly urged that the language of almost half-a-million people is a matter of little or no consequence. The exact number of Pwo Karens is not known. They are not enumerated separately in the Census Report; but it is an accepted fact that they constitute more than one half of the total of eight hundred and fifty thousand mixed Pwos and Sgaws.

Moreover, from the time of Wade, Mason, and "Father" Brayton, there has always been a nucleus of missionaries studying the language; a few government officials, especially police, have also found it valuable to have some acquaintance with it. This number is not likely to increase, but, on the other hand, the number of Karens who wish to study English will certainly do so, and it is with the hope that this work may, in a small way, help the Karens to overcome the heavy handicap of having to learn English through the medium of Burmese that it is sent forth.

With regard to the second objection that has been anticipated, viz., that Pwo Karen is a very unstable language, it may be said that this is an argument in favour of, rather than against the publishing of a dictionary.

Like Talaing, Southern China, and several of the other minor dialects of Burma, Pwo Karen is undergoing a process of rapid disintegration. It is splitting up into sub-dialects which are mutually unintelligible. It is absorbing such a large number of Burmese words that its vocabulary is being completely transformed. Where a Burmese word has been introduced the Karen equivalent which it displaced passes completely out of use and is unknown except to the older generation.

Is it worth while preserving the memory of these obsolete Karen words? From

  • the philological point of view, at any rate, it unquestionably is worthwhile. This may not seem a very sound or convincing reason to the practical man, but it cannot too forcibly be pointed out that the field of philological research in this Province is one of immense importance, and one which has hitherto been left almost completely unexplored.

What Bishop Cladwell did for the Dravidian languages of South India; what quite recently Dr. Brandstetter has done for the Indonesian and Sir Harry Johnson for the Bantu languages, awaits for its accomplishment -- in the no less fertile field of the Indo Chinese languages of our Province -- the arrival of the scholar and enthusiast.

It is with a view to drawing attention to this side of the question that these volumes are described as a "Comparative Dictionary." The aim has been throughout to institute a comparison between the following:Tenasserim Pwo Karen (T.P.)Delta Pwo Karen (D.P.)Sgaw Karen (in round brackets).Burmese [B]

The Sgaw Karen equivalents of the Pwo words are given, without note, at the end of the definition; and it is hoped, that, in addition to indicating the relationship between Pwo and Sgaw, they will enable the student to refer to the copious Sgaw Dictionary and Thesaurus and fill out the scanty definition which the limitation of space has necessitated in this work.

There remains the pleasant duty of acknowledging the generous assistance received by the author and his assistant in their work. The fact that it sees the light of day at all is due to the enterprise of the publishers and the patronage of the Local Government.

I have to thank several members of the American Baptist Mission for their help and advice, and in particular Dr. L. W. Cronkhite, who has taken great pains in reading through the proofs as they have issued from the press and has made many very valuable suggestions. An old MSS of Dr. Brayton's has been collated in the revision of the first volume.
