    development of the nation. Indian Science

    Congress (ISC) - Pride of India (PoI) Expo is an

    initiative to showcase the country’s advancements

    to the youth to encourage them to contribute to the

    nation’s progress.

    India’s leading public and private sectors, research

    labs, educational institutions, corporate, defence

    etc. Also implementation of concepts like the “Hall

    of Pride, Vigyan Jyot and Genesis – Symposium”

    by MM Activ has let the PoI Expo grow from a mere

    exhibition to a vibrant platform.

    Thus, the PoI Expo, over the years, has emerged as

    an excellent platform for meaningful interactions

    between scientific fraternity, academia &

    entrepreneurs, technology transfers, collaborations

    in R & D, launch of tech-driven, innovative products

    and concepts etc. striking right cord with all its

    stakeholders.

    And now that Hon’ble Prime Minister of India has

    taken over the reins of the ISC as its General

    President, as the ISC has entered its centenary year,

    the PoI Expo would be elevated to a completely

    new pedesta l ! Ever more magni f icent ,

    implementation of novel concepts and full of

    glory!

    Pride of India Expo every year.

    The ISC has come a long way from its modest

    beg inn ing i n

    January 1914 in

    Ko l k a t a a n d

    today it stands

    on the threshold

    of its Centennial

    C e l e b r a t i o n !

    The significance

    of this event is

    such that the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India has

    himself taken over the reins of the 100th ISC as its

    General President. Kolkata, the city to hold the first

    session of ISC will have the honour of hosting the

    historic 100th edition of ISC. There is no doubt that

    this magnificence is going to be reflected in PoI Expo

    taking it to new pinnacle of glory like never before!

    ))Indian Science Congress (ISC) is India's most

    prestigious and largest annual science event.

    Scientific community and academic bodies across

    India acknowledge the importance of this event.

    Institutions take extreme pride in organising it in

    their respective regions/campuses.This year, KIIT

    University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha had the privilege

    of hosting the 99th ISC from 03 to 07 January 2012.

    The congress was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Prime

    Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh as per the tradition.

    The focal theme of this year's ISC was "Science and

    Technology for Inclusive Innovation - Role of

    Women".

    A huge pandal in the KIIT campus housed the “Pride

    of India (PoI) Expo”. It was inaugurated by Shri

    Vilasrao Deshmukh, Hon’ble Minister for Science &

    Technology and Earth Sciences in the presence of

    eminent scientists and personalities like Dr. T.

    Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and

    Technology (DST), Prof. Samir K. Brahmachari,

    Secretary, DSIR & DG, CSIR, Dr. Shailesh Nayak,

    Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Prof. Geetha

    Bali, General President, 99th ISC and Dr. Achyuta

    Samanta, Chief Patron, 99th ISC & founder of KIIT

    University and such other dignitaries.

    Over 100 organizations participated in the PoI Expo

    showcasing their excellence in research & new

    developments. PoI Expo once again proved to be

    the optimum platform for interactions between

    scientific fraternity & industry, technology transfers,

    collaborations in R&D and struck the right

    The key pavilions of PoI Expo were Hall of Pride

    (HoP), PSUs/R&D, Corporate/Govt., and Edu

    Vision/States. They were specially designed to

    showcase wide spectrum of exhibitors

    The “Hall of Pride” (HoP) section, this year,

    showcased the inspiring life journey of the father of

    Modern Chemistry, Late Shri Acharya Prafulla

    Chandra Ray. A well conceptualized and

    informative pavilion, the HoP was highly

    appreciated by all the dignitaries.

    The pavilion that aroused maximum interest of the

    visitors was the Defence Research and

    Development Organisation (DRDO) pavilion. It

    housed its various labs showcasing major projects,

    development of missiles, armament, radars,

    specialized vehicles, sensors etc. Council for

    Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) featured

    “New CSIR - 800: Prosperity for all” program

    which was a great platform for interaction amongst

    scientific fraternity, industry and general public.

    Other attractions were exhibits put up by ISRO,

    National Inst i tute of Food Technology

    Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM),

    Controller General of Patents, Bureau of Indian

    Standards (BIS), Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE),

    were also the major attraction displaying their

    innovations and vision for the future.

    ))enthusiastically participated in PoI Expo, showcasing

    their varied endeavors in the field of science and

    technology.

    Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) exhibited

    their various initiatives & innovations in field of

    nuclear power and advanced technologies.

    Department of Science & Technology (DST) and its

    various organisations like Agharkar Research

    Institute, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Indian

    Institute of Geomagnetism, TDB, TIFAC, etc.

    showcased their excellence in innovative

    technology and scientific research. Other important

    participants were Ministry of New Renewable

    Energy (MNRE), National Institute for the

    Orthopedically Handicapped (NIOH), National

    Institute of Mental health (NIMH), Artificial Limbs

    Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), Ali

    Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing

    Handicapped (AYJNIHH), Central Pollution

    Control Board (CPCB), who highlighted their

    achievements.

    With such diverse knowledge sharing in the field of

    science and technology, the PoI Expo attracted a

    large number of eminent scientists, VIPs and

    dignitaries including Dr. R. Chidambaram, Principal

    Scientific Advisor to Govt. of India, many former

    General Presidents ISC, ISCA members, Nobel

    Laureates and foreign dignitaries apart from lakhs of

    visitors including students and general public.

    The impact of the expo was such that visitors were

    seen standing in queues to seek entry into the expo.

    The volunteers from KIIT University, local police

    and organizers skillfully conducted the visitors

    through the PoI expo in an exemplary manner

    enabling them to thoroughly enjoy the exhibition.

    Edu Vision pavilion was conceptualized to provide

    an excellent platform to varied organisations in

    academic space to showcase their innovative

    models and vision for future. Various organisations

    like Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Karnataka

    State Women University, KIIT, Sinhgad Institute,

    Sinhgad Business School, Meghe Group of

    Institutions, IIT Madras, NCERT, Indira Gandhi

    National Open University, SRM University, State

    Institution of Education Technology Kerala, Kerala

    University etc and Publication houses like Springer,

    Wiley, S Chand and Company, Mc Graw Hill

    Education etc. have been regularly participating in

    this segment.

    ))Genesis is a one day symposium which is organized

    concurrent to ISC. The Genesis was

    conceptualised in the Year 2000 with the objective

    of bringing Scientists, Industry, Academia and Policy

    Makers on a common platform to exchange ideas

    and explore collaborative opportunities.

    This year the Genesis was organised on 4th January

    2012 within the KIIT University Campus.

    Complimenting the theme of 99th Indian Science

    Congress the Genesis XI brought together

    stalwarts from the scientific fraternity, industry and

    academia who delved on the theme “Role of

    Women in India's March as an Emerging

    Economy -Sc ience /Hea l th / Educa t ion /

    Empowerment”. Due to its growing popularity

    and relevance, the 11th edition of the symposium

    met with a great success. The deliberations were

    well received and appreciated by the delegates.

    They highly appreciated the new ideas and insights

    expressed by the speakers, which sparked an

    engaging debate among all those present.

    Hall of Pride (HoP) is the most revered segment of

    Pride of India Expo. HoP Pavilion is a tribute to the

    eminent personalities related to science and

    technology who have contributed immensely

    towards the progress and welfare of the nation. This

    pavilion is designed by India's well known artists and

    stands out as one of the most popular and

    captivating divisions of all. All dignitaries to the

    congress, fraternity of scientists, corporate world

    and thousands of students (from schools, colleges

    and universities) apart from lakhs of general public

    are attracted to this hall every year.

    This year the prestigious HoP showcased the life

    Dedicated to Shri Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray

    journey and achievements of Shri Acharya Prafulla

    Chandra Ray, the father of Modern Chemistry.

    )) )) ))Flag off Ceremony: New Delhi - Vigyan Jyot (VJ)

    was flagged off by Prof. Dinesh Singh, Vice

    Chancellor, Delhi University from the renowned

    Miranda House (University College for Women) on

    16th December 2011. Eminent personalities were

    also present apart from a large gathering of

    enthusiastic students.

    The VJ travelled through cities like Agra,

    Kanpur, Lucknow, Allahbad, Varanasi,

    Patna, Gaya, Ranchi, Kolkata etc. before

    reaching Bhubaneswar – venue of ISC

    covering a distance of around

    2000kms. Vigyan Jyot had a

    nationwide support of the Ministry

    of Youth Affairs & Sports, National

    Service Scheme (NSS) and Nehru Yuva

    Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) which ensured

    participation of large number of youth en

    route.

    Welcome Ceremony – KIIT University,

    Bhubaneswar The Vigyan Jyot received a grand

    welcome on 2nd January 2012, at KIIT campus.

    Dr. A. Samanta, Chief Patron, 99th ISC and Founder,

    KIIT University and Dr. P. K. Patasani, Hon’ble MP,

    Bhubaneswar addressed the function which saw an

    a t tendance o f l a rge

    number of students apart

    from other dignitatries.

    The prestigious Vigyan Jyot was

    formally lit at the PoI Expo site by Shri

    Vilasrao Deshmukh, on the 3rd January 2012

    morning and it remained burning throughout the

    duration of the congress. It was visited and

    appreciated by a large number of dignitaries,

    eminent scientists, general public etc. A prominent

    activity at the Vigyan Jyot was the pledge taken by

    number of students to dedicate their life for the

    cause of science.

    Valedictory Function – 99th ISC

    The valedictory function raised a toast to the efforts of

    the organizers and success of the PoI Expo. The Guest of

    Honour, Shri M. C. Bhandare, H.E. Governor of

    Odisha, Prof. Geetha Bali, General President, 99th ISC

    and Dr. A. Samanta, founder of KIIT University praised

    the organizers of “Pride of India Expo” for putting up an

    excellent exhibition and attracting large number of

    visitors. Shri Bhandare presented Pride of India Expo

    awards under the various categories. DRDO once again

    bagged the coveted “Exhibitor of the Year” award,

    second year in succession.

    Prof. Geetha Bali handed over the Vigyan Jyot to the

    representative of Hon'ble Prime Minister, the General

    President, 100th ISC with the message of further

    spreading the awareness of science amongst the

    students and taking the Jyot to Kolkata, the venue of

    100th ISC.
