Cell Transport 

1.Passive transport - particles move into and out of a cell without using any energy from the cell.

*Think of going down a slide…

A. Diffusion - movement from areas of high concentration to lower concentration.

B. Osmosis - diffusion of water across a membrane

(1) isotonic - when concentration is equal on both sides of membrane

(2) hypotonic - when the salt or solute concentration is low outside of cell. The water will move into the cell. The cell will swell. Animals cells can burst (cytolysis). Some animals have contractile vacuoles to remove excess water.

Plant cells will be rigid (turgor)

(3) hypertonic - when solute concentration is greater outside of the cell. The water will be pulled out of the cell.

The animal cell will shrivel up (crenated).
