Dear Fellow Sailors, Family, and Friends,

On behalf of Bayview Yacht Club, I would like to welcome all of this year’s participants to the 96th running of the

Bayview Mackinac Race, the world’s longest consecutively held freshwater race. As you all know, the theme of this

year’s race has been “patience and flexibility”, and I would like to thank all of those who have embraced this to get us

set to be the first major sailing event in the country since the beginning of the COVID pandemic.

First and foremost, I would like to thank the 2020 Bayview Mackinac Race Chair, Chris Clark, as well as the Mackinac

Race Authority, Race Committee Volunteers, and Bayview Staff. Without their ability to quickly review, adapt, and

communicate with ever-changing rules and regulations, I’m sure we would not be where we are today.

I would also like to thank all of our sponsors who have continued to support this great race even during these difficult

times. This year has brought us two new Presenting Sponsors in The Mackinac Race Foundation and Atwater Brewery.

The Mackinac Race Foundation has been working for several years to raise funds to help support the Bayview Mackinac

Race and has been essential to this year’s success. If you are interested in helping support the Foundation, please

visit https://byc.com/Club_Info/BYC_Foundation, for more information and to donate. Furthermore, the support of

Atwater Brewery has been a welcome addition and, while we won’t have the opportunity to taste test their products at

the Island Awards Party this year, I encourage you to give them a try at Bayview or your local watering hole. Additional

sponsorship support has come from Luca Mariano Premium Whiskey, the Grand Hotel, Tito’s Vodka, Shepler’s Ferry,

NoMI Sparkling Water, Aitken & Ormand Insurance, Frankenmuth Insurance, North Sails, Coral Reef Sailing Apparel,

Doyle Sails, and LCS Record Retrieval. The support of these generous sponsors is what keeps the costs down for our

race competitors, so I ask that you all return the favor by supporting these companies as well.

I would also like to graciously thank the City of Port Huron, Mackinac Island, the US Coast Guard, Canadian Authorities,

and Marx Layne & Associates for all of their support.

Lastly, I would like to thank all of the competitors. With the state of the race constantly changing, for many it would

have just been easier to throw in the towel. However, in the true spirit of the Bayview Mackinac Race, we still have over

100 boats who have remained patient and flexible, and are ready to battle it out up the shoreline of Lake Huron. To all

of you racing, best of luck, stay safe, and sail fast.

Here’s to 96 years and still counting…

Regards,

Commodore Ryan Farrell

From the Race Chairman

This is certainly NOT the year I was expecting to have. I am sure everyone agrees that this year had brought challenges that no one expected. I am writing this on 1 June 2020 only moments after theStay at Home order has been lifted and we can now gather outside in groups of 100 with proper socialdistancing. There have been a lot of changes in the Bayview Mackinac Race this year. • Virtual Cove Island Mark, assuming we can go in Canadian waters • Using Yellow Brick to record finish times • Virtually no printed material • Our wonderful and highly committed sponsors had to reduce their commitments due to the impact on their business • No Bluewater Festival • Social Distancing on the island • Reduced dockage on Mackinac Island • No party with the Endless Summer band • The list goes on and on. Given all this we have endured. This year (2020) is the 96th consecutive running of the Bayview Mackinac Race. Through our patience and flexibility, we have retained the honor of ”The World’s LongestContinuously Run Long Distance Freshwater Yacht Race” Not a World War or a Global Pandemic has stopped us from finding a way to run this race. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported this year’s race. This includesobviously Bayview Yacht Club, City of Port Huron, Mackinac Island, sailors and our sponsors: Bayview Mackinac Race Foundation, Atwater Brewery, Luca Mariano Premium Whiskey, Grand Hotel, Tito’sVodka Shelpler’s Ferry, NoMI Sparkling Water, Aitken-Ormond Insurance, Frankenmuth Insurance, North Sails, Coral Reef Sailing Apparel, Doyle Sails and LCS Record Retrieval. This year we need to especially be thankful to those who worked all year and are not joining us for the race or on the island. There is a huge group of volunteers who look forward to the race as much as the racers do. This is their summer fun time to hang with their friends and family members on the volunteer committees and boats. Due to COVID 19 we were forced to make large cutbacks in the number of volunteers we could invite to Mackinac Island. I am proud of the work our volunteers have done supporting us when things looked doubtful, even though they are not enjoying the island or the simple thank you of a race committee shirt. When you reach the island, or whichever port in the Mackinac area you tie up in, make sure you thank the businesses, workers and residents for all the hard work they have done to get ready and give us theopportunity to do what we love. Stay safe, patient, and flexible. This is not just how we will make the best of the changes that we are yet to discover but good advice as to how to win a race. This will truly be a race like no other we have ever done!

Respectfully,Chris ClarkChairman - 2020 Bayview Mackinac Race

Previous Bayview Mackinac Race Committee Persons of the Year

Race Committee Person of the Year

Jim Motschall has been a long standing member of Bayview. He learned to sail at the DYC on the Flying Scots.

Eventually, becoming Chair of the Adult Program. Jim sailed many years on the DRYA courses and finally got hischance to sail the Port Huron to Mackinac Races. He sailed on BYC boats and is now a “Old Goat”.

Today, he is a valued club member of the Race Committee. Jim has served over 10 years as the Liaison for the United States Coast Guard. His responsibilities include the Marine Permit for the Mac Race, arranging the USCG escort vessel for the safety of the sailors, constant communication with Sector Detroit, Sector Sault Ste. Marie and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. His knowledge of the Coast Guard and how they operate is invaluable to this Committee and the Race Chair.

This year’s race, as challenging as it has been, the USCG has been very cooperative and understanding. The USCGMACKINAW will be watching over the fleet. Jim always asks the Sailors to thank the members of the USCG when they see them for all they do for Bayview Yacht Club and our Great Country. And because of his dedication and all he has done for the Bayview Mackinac Race, we are honoring Jim as the 2020 Race Committee Person of the Year.

Welcome to the 96th running of the Bayview Mackinac Race, the longest continuously run freshwater sailboat race in North America, from the entire Bayview Yacht Club family. As of this writing (June 30th) the Bayview Mackinac Race is the only distance race scheduled to be held on the Great Lakes in 2020.

To say 2020 has been different is maybe the biggest understatement of the century. Back in March, I was in Hawaii when the manure hit the fan. After 4 days we returned home to empty airports and closed restaurants. Since then, Chris Clark, 2020 Mackinac Race Chairman has stayed on top of all the changes and kept everyone updated. You may get tiredgetting the email blasts but it’s the best way to keep the competitors up to date.

Chris is supported by Race Administrator Linda Rosiek, Safety Committee Chairman Com. Brian Geraghty, TechnicalChairman Art LeVasseur along with the Mackinac Race Authority (in alphabetical order) Paul Falcone, Todd Jones, Luiz Kahl, Don Maxwell, Bob Nutter, C.J. Ruffing, Dr. Gary Shoemaker and yours truly. In addition, there are numerousvolunteers behind the scenes, and we cannot thank them enough. Please keep them in mind when you see them and let them know that their efforts are greatly appreciated. In addition to the changes we have all faced since March, the race had its own set of challenges including the Canadian government shutting down the border preventing the running of the Cove Island Course and the lack of dockage at the island itself. We could not hold this race without our sponsors. New in 2020 is Atwater Brewery & The Bayview Yacht Club Foundation (commonly known as the Mackinac Foundation), along with returning sponsors North Sails, Grand Hotel, Luca Mariano, Tito’s Vodka, Sheplers, Aitken & Ormond, Frankenmuth Insurance, Doyle Sails, Coral Reef Apparel, NoMI Sparkling Water, and Marx Layne. We would also like to thank our hosts, the City of Port Huron and Mackinac Island. Sail Safe, Sail Fast, and as our race chairman says “Stay patient and flexible. The only known is there will be more change”

The Straits of Mackinac Society was founded by Bayview Yacht Club to honor all Mackinac Race Committee personnel who have served on the committee for 15 years. Members of the Straits of Mackinac Society are known as “Old Forts”: our heroes who have worked in the background with such dedication for so many years deserve proper recognition. Without their untiring effort, there would not be a starting cannon, or any race at all.

We wish to thank the many men and women who have served Bayview Yacht Club and the sailing fraternity over the years by honoring them with membership in the Straits of Mackinac Society.

The Bayview Mackinac Hall of Fame Trophy – aka the “Old Bear Trophy” was donated by the Bayer Family in honor of the first recipient: Com. Charles M. Bayer. The trophy is perpetual and will be awarded to select individuals in honor of their support, dedication, and outstanding contribution to the success and continuation of the Bayview Yacht Club Port Huron to Mackinac Race. Nominees should have completed at least 10 BYC Mackinac Races, and brought honor to themselves and to the race.

In the first four years, up to five people will be elected to be named on the trophy and inducted into the Mackinac Race Hall of Fame. Then, beginning in 2019, only one person could be elected annually.

The Deed of gift indicates that the Bayview Mackinac Old Goats Society will handle the nomination and election process for the “Old Bear Trophy”. The selection committee will include Old Goat Committee Members, Grand Rams, and volunteers who will elect recipients each year. The nomination period starts June 1st and ends the day before the Bayview Mackinac Race each year. The selection committee will meet before August 20th to elect that year’s recipient(s).

If you would like to nominate someone (living or deceased) for this honor, please fill out the nomination form available at byc.com, and return it to the BYC office before the beginning of the race.

2019 InducteesThe Hall of Fame Trophy is awarded to individuals in recognition of their support, dedication

and outstanding contribution to the success and continuation of the Bayview Yacht Club Mackinac Race. The “Old Bear Trophy” was donated in 2014 by the Bayer family in honor of its first recipient, Com. Charles M. Bayer who was affectionately called “Old Bear” by his friends and family. Nominees for the Hall of Fame Trophy must have raced at least 10 BYC Mackinac Races and brought honor to themselves, the Race and Bayview Yacht Club.

This year the Bayview Yacht Club Mackinac Hall of Fame Selection Committee is proud to announce that Jerry Schostak has been selected as recipient of the “Old Bear Trophy.”

Jerry began his racing career with Ray Jocobs and his boat, Next Best, when they won the Port Huron to Mackinac Race in 1967. Shortly thereafter, Jerry began skippering his own boats and won Mackinac races throughout the ‘70’s, ‘80’s, ‘90’s, and into and through 2009 where he sailed his final Mackinac Race after racing more than 60 Bayview and Chicago Mackinac Races.

Jerry and his six boats, Brothers Four and Fujimo, sailed on Lake St. Clair, throughout the Great Lakes, both U.S. coasts and various countries in Europe as well as Japan for over four decades.

His many honors include several class and First Place Overalls in the Bayview Mackinac Race. He had equal success in many DRYA regattas on Lake St. Clair and in the Chicago Mackinac Race as well as the Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC) as well as the 50 foot Class regattas where Jerry skippered two different IOR 50 Foot Class Fujimos.

Congratulations to the 2019 BYC Mackinac Hall of Fame Inductee! Jerry Schostak

The Society of Mackinac Island Old Goats hopes that you have an enjoyable and successful Mackinac

Race.

Don’t wait until your 25th BYC Mackinac Race to start filling out your Old Goats Society Application Form.

This is a Corinthian Sport and your word is good enough for us. Most of us remember our first and last races

and years where we did particularly well. Then you need to start filling out the blank years by thinking about the

different boats that you raced on in a specific year. After a while you will start to remember how many races you did

on an individual boat. Pretty soon you will have it all filled in or be able to contact skippers, friends or family who may be

able to help you jog your memory.

There is no giant database with all the thousands of crew members who raced on thousands of boats dating back to 1925 when BYC held

it’s first Mackinac Race. We have a difficult time keeping track of the thousands of sailors racing in the current year. So . . . Start now to keep

track of your Mackinac Race participation so that when you get to Race 25, you will be all set to send in your completed application form (due

by September 1st ) and be inducted into the BYC Mackinac Old Goats Society.

There will be a photograph of all Bayview Mackinac Old Goats, Grand Rams and Double Goats taken on Mackinac Island prior to the Island

Awards Party. Look for the Old Goats Banner near the stage and listen for the announcement. We will gather near the Banner around 12:30 PM.

New Old Goats and New Grand Rams will be Officially Inducted into the Society of Old Goats at the BYC Mackinac Awards Dinner in the

Fall. Also held that same afternoon of the Awards Dinner is the New Old Goats and Grand Rams Cocktail Party. You will be informed about the

details of these events early in September.

Old Goats and Grand Rams also receive invitations to Old Goat Luncheons held in the Fall and Winter and the Old Goats Roast held in the

Spring at Bayview Yacht Club.

All Old Goats, Grand Rams, families, and friends are invited to the Roast for an evening of fun.

There is also recognition for those sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac Races AND 25 Chicago Mackinac Races who are called

Double Goats. Please contact Chicago Yacht Club directly if you qualify for this award. If you have completed 50 Bayview Mackinac Races,

please fill out a Grand Ram Application Form (due by May 1st of each year) found on the Bayview Mackinac Race Website under the Race Info

tab.

Please inform us of any changes in personal information by sending us an email to [email protected] or [email protected]. You can

also call the BYC Office at 313-822-1853. To order an Old Goat blazer patch, Bayview Old Goat logo clothing, or other Old Goat merchandise,

please see the Old Goat/Grand Ram Merchandise order form on the Bayview Mackinac Race website www.bycmack.com under the Race Info

tab. Please don’t hesitate to contact Ray Adams at [email protected] with any questions or to submit your application.

Committee Members for the Society of the BYC Mackinac Island Old Goats Society are Ray Adams (Chair), Winnie Adams, Com. Rob

Amsler, Com. Chuck Bayer, Com. John Burke, Com. Brian Geraghty, Jim Gerometta, Com. Tom Meier, Com. Bob Niederoest, Stos’ Popowich,

The Society of Grand Rams was founded to honor those sailors who have completed 50 or more BYC Mackinac Races. Having sailed 50 or more Mackinac Races requires more than one hundred twenty days on the water and some fourteen thousand miles of sailing. They have likely endured 100 thunderstorms and 500 or more watch changes.

If you are approaching this milestone, please fill out a Grand Rams Application form, available online at www.bycmack.com under the Race Info tab, and return it to the club by May 1st in time to be included in all the celebrations for the BYC Mackinac Race that year.
