NEWSCASTER 2017 EDITION

Advent is the beginning of the Christian year. It is a time of “new beginnings” for us. The good news is that no matter what

the past eleven months have held, Advent calls out to us to remember how much God loves us, even in our brokenness. It is

SUNDAY MORNINGS!

CHILDREN’ CHURCH 9:15 &

SUNDAY SCHOOL 10:00

DECEMBER 2017

It can be tough for teens to think beyond themselves. Their lives

are constantly in flux, which creates an impulse to egocentrism.

And yet, at the same time, tweens are not jaded by the realities of

injustices. This means that when they are able to look beyond

themselves at the world around them, they offer a uniquely

prophetic gaze. Advent is a time for hope, and the prophet Isaiah

urges us to dream big. Our hope in God pushes us beyond ourselves

and toward God’s ultimate vision for the world. Spend some time

considering your own hopes for the world. How have they changed

over time? What do you think our tweens hope for? How can we

help them align their hopes with God’s vision? Teens may find it

easy to trust God intellectually. It might be more difficult for them

to examine whether or not their lives demonstrate that trust in God.

Join them on this inner journey so that you can help point them on

the way., let them know when you see Christ in them!

DECEMBER 2017 Jeremiah knew firsthand that it was not easy to be God’s prophet. He had the unenviable task of delivering messages from God that God’s people did not want to hear. land would be invaded and that survivors would be sent into exile. Not all of Jeremiah’s messages contained bad news. When the Israelites were in exile in Babylon, he delivered a message of hope. Jeremiah assured God’s people that God was still with them and encouraged them to look to the future with hope. Jeremiah assured the people that although they would be exiled if they did not change their ways, “The time is coming,” Jeremiah told the people when God would raise up a new ruler. The wise king promised by God and foretold by Jeremiah’s message would be a descendant of King David. About 600 years after Jeremiah delivered God’s message to the Israelites, a baby was born in Bethlehem. As we prepare to once again remember and celebrate the birth of Jesus, we remember the words of hope that the prophet Jeremiah gave to the Israelites. This month, we prepare to celebrate Jesus,

David’s descendant and our righteous King. ~ Vicki

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We need at least 3 more volunteers to keep this ministry

running. Sunday pick up and take home ministry is a

great outreach to our homebound and shut-ins and we are in

need of drivers! This ministry enables them to come to

church to worship God with their fellow Christians in faith.

We are flexible with your schedule! If you are interested in

volunteering in this ministry outreach, please call 488-1374.

Venice and Englewood Lions Club

Vision Program provides free eye care and glasses. There is

a large box located in the front office (main building) where

you can donate your used glasses, cell phones and hearing

aids.

For more information there are brochures located in the front

office or you can call: 941-486-6065.

Sunday Morning Team We have seven volunteers that open and lock up the church

on Sunday mornings. This is saving GUMC funds because

we do not have to hire someone to do it. Many thanks to the

folks volunteering in this ministry. If you are interested in

joining this ministry, please contact Jay Geerdes at

941-485-2634.

MINISTRY, MISSION, GROUP Every active person in our Grace Church

Family is encouraged to have a M, M, and G!

MINISTRY – At least one ministry within the church

MISSION – At least one mission to those outside the church

GROUP – At least one group during the year for spiritual growth and accountability

Do you have a Ministry, a Mission, and a Group?

MINISTRIES

We sometimes hear through casual

comments of church members who are

in assisted living, rehabilitation, or are

home bound. Then it begs the question:

How many are there that we don’t

know about?

Please, if you know of someone in assisted living,

rehabilitation or homebound (even if they have a caregiver),

call the church office with their name and location. We want

to make sure we are not missing anyone and we want to do a

better job in reaching out to our homebound members.

Thank you for your assistance.

Grace is a Stephen Ministry congregation.

A Stephen Minister is equipped to provide

high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care

to people who are hurting. If you are called to

be a Stephen Minister or are in need of a

Stephen Minister, please speak to the

Pastor.

Greeters 11 AM Service We need Greeters to help welcome people to Grace

before the Traditional Service at both the front door and

the back door. The time is from 10:30 to10:55.

Everyone can greet, whether you're a new member or a

long time member, come regularly or not so often.

Also, if you attend the Contemporary Service and want

to mingle and greet at a particular time, let us know.

To volunteer, call Betty Jo Shiell 497-7854 or

Mary Chambers 493-9644.

OFFICE MINISTRY SUB VOLUNTEER

OPPORTUNITES

NO experience necessary; we will train you. Volunteering

consists of answering the phones, greeting and directing

people to the correct staff member. There may be some light

filing and copying. You are welcome to bring a book to fill

the quiet moments.

If you are interested in volunteering please call the office

at: 941-488-1374.

Saving Campbell’s Soup Labels AND

Box Tops for Red Bird Mission

For soup labels: the whole coupon needs to be cut out,

including the code on the label and the red part that says

1 coupon.

For Box Tops: it’s the little label that says ‘Box Top’

including the expiration date. Turn them in at the front

office. Henderson Settlement uses the box tops for school

supplies for the two schools that are part of the mission. On

some snacks, there is a note on the front of the bag that a

box top is there. It is usually very small on the back.

This is a mission that is part of the Red Bird Missionary

Conference located in a very poor section of our great

country in SE Kentucky. With labels that we might just

throw away, this mission is able to get items that help the

children and adults they serve. For other information

CROP HUNGER WALK IS COMING

The 2018 John Clay Memorial CROP Hunger Walk will be held

on Sunday February 25 at 3 PM. Look for further information in

bulletins, pamphlets, and signs.

About John W. Clay

Born in 1939 in Brazil of missionary parents, John met his wife

Glenda and served as a missionary in Brazil. He completed his

higher education in the United States and lived and worked as a

Christian educator in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1984, an-

swering an add, he was hired at Grace United Methodist Church.

He served as Director of Christian Education until 1993. In May

of 93 John was consecrated as Diaconal Minister to Adults and

held that position until his death in 1995. Cause of his early death

was melanoma (skin cancer).

John Clay was an avid cyclist and runner. It was common on his

days off, that he would bike to Boca Grande and back (100 miles).

He was held in the highest regard as a life-long Missionary, Chris-

tian Educator and Minister.

In 1990 he was responsible for organizing the first CROP walk in

Venice. To honor him as the founder, in 1996 and ever since, the

Venice CROP walk became known as the John Clay Memorial

CROP Hunger Walk.

About CROP Hunger Walks

CROP Hunger Walks are interfaith hunger education and fund-

raising events sponsored by the Church World Services (CWS).

Organized by local churches and community organizations they

are led by volunteers to raise funds for food, clean water, and pro-

vide resources (such as seeds, tools, technical training etc.) that

empower people to meet their own needs. Donations raised are

sent to the most impoverished nations as well as used locally to

eradicate hunger.

CROP Hunger Walks take place through out the year across the

US. The Venice John Clay Memorial CROP Hunger Walk is of-

ten the most successful in Florida and is usually one of the top

fund raisers in the nation.

For further information on CROP Walks go online to CWS/

CROPwalk.

Freda Boone Scholarship For Grace Summer Camp has

been set up for boys and girls to attend our Grace Summer

Camp. We were blessed by Freda for so many years at our

church. She was a charter member of Grace. Because of her

love for children, it is our honor to have this scholarship in

her name. If you find it in your heart, funds can be added to

the scholarship in Freda’s name.

GIVING

We Encourage You to Give Through Online Giving

Here are some options to choose from:

1. BILL PAY THRU YOUR LOCAL BANK VIA ONLINE

BANKING - Set up your weekly/monthly giving via your

local bank just as you would your mortgage

payment or your utility payment

2. AUTHORIZE GUMC TO DO A MONTH DEBIT

TRANSACTION - This method will need an authorization

form signed at the church office. Please contact the church

office for the authorization form.

We do NOT have a building fund. This would imply we are

gathering/saving funds to start a new building project.

We do currently have a loan from building the Preschool

and renovation of TFEC. IF you plan to give directly to pay

the loan – please note on check “LOAN REDUCTION” and

we will know these funds go to the principle of the loan.

Thank you!

GRACE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

December Meeting:

December is always a special month for Grace United

Methodist Women. This year is no different. We will be

holding our annual Christmas Tea on Tuesday, December

12th from 2 to 4 pm in Punch Hall. All women of Grace and

their guests are invited to attend. There will be a formal tea

with great eats and live entertainment. This year we are

excited to have four flute players and a vocalist presenting

our Christmas program. We will have a sing-a-long. Come

join the fun.

A donation of FROBS…flour, rice, oil, beans and sugar will

be collected for Cornerstone Ministries in Tampa, Florida.

Cornerstone is one of many United Methodist Women’s

missions here in the United States.
