Morning Worship November 17, 2019

Reflection — True conversion is embracing Jesus Christ as he is freely offered to us in the gospel. ~ Stephen Smallman The gospel of Christ is the good news that at the cost of his Son’s life, God has done everything necessary to enthrall us with what will make us eternally and ever-increasingly happy, namely, himself. ~ John Piper Some other religions teach that God will forgive your failure to produce a good moral record. But no other religion claims that God actually pro-vides an absolutely perfect record for you, whereby he regards you as absolutely holy and acceptable and flawless. Other religions say: “You give God a righteous record, then he will owe you.” But the gospel says: “God (through Jesus Christ) gives you a perfect record, and then you owe him.” ~ Tim Keller

Approach to God

Welcome

Prelude

Call to Worship — Psalm 95:1-3, 6-7 (responsive) Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! 2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! 3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. 6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

Prayer of Invocation followed by the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your king-dom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, for yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Songs of Praise

Wonderful, Merciful Savior Wonderful, merciful Savior, Precious Redeemer and friend. Who would have thought that a Lamb could Rescue the souls of men? Oh, you rescue the souls of men. Counselor, comforter, keeper. Spirit, we long to embrace. You offer hope when our hearts Have hopelessly lost the way. Oh, we hopelessly lost the way. You are the one that we praise, You are the one we adore. You give the healing and grace Our hearts always hunger for. Oh, our hearts always hunger for. Almighty infinite father, Faithfully loving your own. Here in our weakness you find us wanting you more and more Oh, wanting you more and more.

Songs of Praise, cont.

In Christ Alone In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, what strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone!—who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones he came to save: Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied— For every sin on him was laid; here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground his body lay, light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious Day! Up from the grave he rose again! And as he stands in victory. Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me, For I am his and he is mine— Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me; From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from his hand; Till he returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!

Confession of Sin & Assurance of Pardon — 1 John 1:5-10 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellow-ship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Response in Song

He Who is Mighty Oh, the mercy our God has shown To those who sit in death’s shadow The sun on high pierced the night Born was the Cornerstone PRE-CHORUS Unto us a Son is given, unto us a Child is born CHORUS He Who is mighty has done a great thing Taken on flesh, conquered death’s sting Shattered the darkness and lifted our shame Holy is His name Oh, the freedom our Savior won The yoke of sin has been broken Once a slave, now by grace No more condemnation BRIDGE Now my soul magnifies the Lord I rejoice in the God Who saves I will trust His unfailing love I will sing His praises all my days

Jesus, Thank You The mystr'y of the cross I cannot comprehend The agonies of Calvary You the perfect holy One crushed Your Son Drank the bitter cup reserved for me

Your blood has washed away my sin Jesus thank You The Father's wrath completely satisfied Jesus thank You Once Your enemy now seated at Your table Jesus thank You

By Your perfect sacrifice I've been brought near Your enemy You've made Your friend Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace Your mercy and kindness know no end.

Lover of my soul I want to live for you. (3X)

Congregational Prayer Offering If you’re visiting, please fill out a gray visitor card and place it in the offering basket.

At parent’s discretion children ages 6-7 are dismissed to children’s church in ROOM #3, ages 4-5 are dismissed to ROOM #5.

Sermon Text — Romans 15:14-21 14 I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another. 15 But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God. 18 For I will not venture to speak of any-thing except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed, 19 by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that from Jerusa-lem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; 20 and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else's foundation, 21 but as it is written, “Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.”

• Pray that in the midst of difficulties, Pastor Francis will trust the Lord and His leading and care. Pray that God will give him skill in leading.

• Pray for John Wise that the Lord would give him strength during this busy time of school and during his licensure exams on December 7th. Pray that the Lord would be pleased in how John leans on Him for strength and wisdom and that He will give John the ability to serve his family at home and at New Hope well.

• Pray for Russell Beeman as he is deployed in South Korea. Pray for his safety and for comfort as he struggles with loneliness. Pray for his family as they miss him.

D A I LY D E VOT IO N

Memory Text: Romans 15:4 — 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the en-couragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Westminster Confession of Faith 8.8 To all those for whom Christ has purchased redemption, He does certainly and effectually apply and communicate the same; making intercession for them, and revealing unto them, in and by the word, the mysteries of salva-tion; effectually persuading them by His Spirit to believe and obey, and gov-erning their hearts by His word and Spirit; overcoming all their enemies by His almighty power and wisdom, in such manner, and ways, as are most consonant to His wonderful and unsearchable dispensation. Monday: Rom 15:14-15. How does Rom 15:14 “balance” our impression of the Roman church of 14:3f? Think about how the grace of Christ in the gos-pel would produce goodness (12:9f), knowledge (12:1f), and strength/love to instruct/reprove one another (Eph 4:15). Give thanks for New Hope through the lens of v 14. How can we/you grow in these things (Heb 5:14, 1 Cor 14:20)? Tuesday: Rom 15:15-19. What is Paul’s authority (Gal 1:1)? How does he describe his job (16-19)? What does Paul mean by describing his job like that of an OT priest in the temple (16)? How are you made acceptable to God (16, Lev 22:20, Rom 3:25, 8:1)? Are you accepted by God? Delight in that! How might that change your view of self? Others? Wednesday: Rom 15:17-19. Paul has condemned boasting (Rom 3:27). How is his boasting different here? Does Paul underplay his accomplish-ments? How does Paul glorify God in these verses? Whose power does he see through his gifts and in his ministry? Consider your (and other’s) gifts and accomplishments this way. How can you praise and thank God for them (2 Thess 1:3, Eph 1:15f)? Thursday: Rom 15:18. Paul’s goal was to present the Gentiles acceptable to God. What other goal is stated in v 18? How does this relate to Rom 1:5, 16:26, 12:1-2? How does an accepted one live (1 Pet 2:5)? What attitude/action/change are you convicted about when you consider “grow in obedi-ence”? Friday: Rom 15:19-21. How do vv 14-18 glow naturally into Paul’s ambition in vv 19-21? Ash: “If gospel ministry is fulfilled when people all over the world believe, then gospel ministry can’t ever stand still.” Worship leads to witness. The gospel overflows. Pray for those witnessing to unreached people. Pray for evangelists. Pray for New Hope’s witness. Seek oppor-tunity to let the gospel overflow. Saturday: Read Rom 15:22-33. How does Paul expect the church in Rome to partner with him?
