Welcome to the 2014 Canberra International Music Festival Celebrating its 20th year this yearrsquos Festival will bring together many of Australiarsquos finest musicians and a wonderful array of acclaimed international artists to ensure a memorable program

This yearrsquos theme The Fire and the Rose will explore the centenary of the commencement of World War I and the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II through the works of composers who wrote while serving as soldiers on all sides

You will experience a rich and vibrant program of classical and contemporary music ndash a showcase of the familiar and the new The Festival program will feature a number of major reflective works by Bach Mozart and Brahms performed on period instruments

Once again the award-winning Amazing Spaces series showcases Canberrarsquos unique architecture and landscapes and explores the connections between art and music Itrsquos a wonderful opportunity to experience what our city has to offer at its most beautiful time of year

I encourage Canberrans and visitors to the city not to miss this yearrsquos music program and wish everyone involved all the best for the Festivalrsquos 20th anniversary

2014 will be the CIMFrsquos biggest program yet and my last festival ndash my final gift to a city I love On the surface the program is about war but it is really about peace The Great War gave birth to the modern world and its long shadows still hang over the present day The loss of all the

musicians who were killed or maimed on the battlefields of World War 1 ended up killing classical music Whatever remnants managed to survive that catastrophe were wiped out by the next World War It created a poverty of spirit At its heart where there should have been love was fear and despair It was a universal wound which defied healing

100 years later in response to these events we will bring 100 composersrsquo lost works back to life We will have them live again while their music lasts and by hearing their music we will experience in a new way what it is to lose such life and talent

The festival is entitled the Fire and the Rose and speaks to a balance between passion and love that ultimately informs wisdom I am very grateful that 12 international missions are supporting this idea ndash that the time of making war is over I believe humanity has a chance to break this regular cycle of destruction ndash that there is nothing inevitable about resorting to militarism over diplomacy

This music speaks powerfully to life My hope is it can inoculate us against war

Government Australia Council corporate sponsors and the Canberra community in the form of concert sponsorship volunteering billeting and being our attentive and critical audience

This year our Artistic Director Chris Latham has put together a program that may challenge but will certainly delight The music which he has researched for the past ten years will commemorate the centenary of WWI and the 75th anniversary of WWII Many of these concerts will be held in the Fitters Workshop ndash built in 1916 one of the first buildings erected in Canberra

Sadly this is Chris Lathamrsquos last Festival We have been very fortunate to have had such a talented Artistic Director and are enormously proud of what he has achieved for the Canberra community and Pro Musica

The European Union is delighted to support the prestigious Canberra International Music Festival in what promises to be a magnificent classical music event

I am particularly pleased that the opening night of the 2014 festival will take place on

9 May a date when 500 million European citizens celebrate Europe Day all over the world

A number of the EU Member States Embassies are also involved in the festival offering the Canberra community a unique opportunity of enjoying some remarkable pieces of work ndash many of which are in fact world or Australian premieres

In a year when we commemorate the centenary of the start of WWI it is fitting that CIMF Director Chris Latham has put together a repertoire by European and other composers who at different times were affected or influenced by war and its difficult consequences

For Europe 2014 also marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall which led ten years ago to the historic enlargement of the EU to Central and Eastern Europe

With my thanks to all who have made this event possible I invite you to experience this wonderful festival of great music
