Crunch Time For You are my hope; O Lord GOD, You are my confidence from my youth. Psalm 71:5 Trick or Treat night is just around the corner. I’m still awaiting the proclamation from city hall to tell me just when that will be. I’m already planning ahead, making sure I have my treats and decorations in order. On the designated day, I’ll double check the light on my front porch and over the garage to alert the passing children I’m there and ready to deliver. As most all of you know by now, I give a full-sized candy bar to the costumed kids who stop by my house. It’s usually a Hershey or a Nestle’s Crunch bar. One year, I gave out Take- Five candy bars because I was told that was the youth’s current favorite. I aim to please. I want them to leave happy, excited and thankful. Before I order the year’s candy bars, I always do a bit of Googling. I try to discover this year’s favorite candy bar or Halloween treat. This year, I found out the kid’s Number One choice is Skittles. In second place is M&M’s. As Paul Lynde sang in Bye, Bye Birdie, “What’s the matter with kids these days?” Skittles and M&M’s are not candy bars. And Skittles aren’t even chocolate! What’s up with that? Don’t these kids know it can’t get any better than a full-sized chocolate candy bar in your Halloween treat bag or plastic pumpkin? A Snickers bar appeared on the list at #3 (Whew!), but the tried and true, the wonderfully chocolatey and delicious Hershey bar did not enter the Halloween fray until #8 and that was for the miniatures. I cannot believe any young’uns would prefer little Hershey nuggets over a full-sized Hershey unless they got a whole bag of them. Trick or Treat night is always a treat for me. I really enjoy the children in their wide variety of costumes, especially the homemade ones that show imagination, creativity and ingenuity. I also delight in the diverse personalities and their individual approaches to me and my tasty fare. Some boldly announce, “Trick or Treat!” and confidently hold out their Halloween bags. Others are timid and shy and probably wish I did curbside deliveries. But most of all, I revel in the joy expressed when they get a full-sized chocolate candy bar (even if it isn’t Skittles). Confidence. It’s an important trait we want to develop in our children and in ourselves. This especially true when comes to our relationship with God. When we ask God to forgive us our sins, we can be confident of God’s mercy. “For God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (I John 1:9) When we pray and want to be sure God hears us, understands us and will answer us, ”we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him [Jesus Christ].” (Ephesians 3:12) When we need someone to be there for us in our time of need, we can be confident God is there, always there for us. “'Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10) Worship Schedule Sunday: 8 AM and 10:30 AM Sunday Church School for all ages: 9:15 AM Senior Pastor Donald L. Since You Asked... Pastor, I enjoyed your September article on our “educational team.” Could you list our Sunday School teachers so we can thank them personally for all they do? Thank you. We have a great team educating youth and adults. They help us know Jesus and show Jesus in so many ways. We truly appreciate their skills, talents and dedication. Here is our current roster of teachers. 1st-2nd Grade: Betsy Elliott and Rebecca Tedesco 3rd-4th Grade: Charles and Marcie Castricone 5th-6th Grade: Confirmation: Pastor Rice and Linda McFadden 7th-8th Grade: Cody Jerles High School: Nicole Roman-Willey Adults: Richard Elliott and John Stahl Grace Lutheran also offers several Bible Studies throughout the year. Find Joy in Our Life’s Journey is a women’s Bible Study led by Linda McFadden on the 3rd Wednesdays of the month, May through September. Pastor Rice’s next Bible Study meets for five consecutive Wednesdays in October at 6:45 p.m. in Luther Hall. The fall, the study will examine the first sermons of the Early Church as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. More information on this offering can be found in the article printed below this one.

The Gospel Truth: The Apostle’s Proclaim the Good News of Jesus

The Gospel Truth is the theme for this year’s Fall Bible Study. The series will take a close look at

some of the first sermons of the Apostolic Church as recorded in the Book of Acts. How did the Apostles first convey the Good News of Jesus? How do their messages resonate with us today? Find the answers to these and many other questions as we listen again to the timeless declarations of salvation in the name of Jesus Christ. The Bible Study meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:45 in Luther Hall. Joins us for a time of pertinent information and lively discussion.

Schedule October 2: Peter’s Pentecost Proclamation (Acts 2:14-42) October 9: Stephen’s Closing Argument (Acts 7:1-53) October 16: James’ Remarks of Reconciliation (Acts 15:13-21, 21:20-26) October 23: Paul’s Rhetorical Triumph in Athens (Acts 17:16-34) October 30: Paul Witnesses to a King (Acts 26:1-32)

Annual Oktoberfest is October 20! Oktoberfest is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate God’s goodness and grace. Our annual event combines Reformation blessings with the many joys of autumn. While many communities and organizations celebrate Oktoberfest in September, we celebrate ours in October. After all, isn’t that what the “Oktober” in Oktoberfest is all about? We will hold our annual celebration Sunday, October 20 following the 10:30 a.m. worship service in Fellowship Hall. Hospitality Ministries will offer brats, sauerkraut, hot dogs, mashed potatoes, chips, beverages and more. Our Hospitality Ministries board is requesting dessert donations for the dinner event. A sign-up sheet will be placed on the table in the narthex. Please bring one of your seasonal favorites to Fellowship Hall by 10:15 a.m. that Sunday. Our Grace youth will provide games, crafts and other activities for children. A free-will offering will be taken to support our Grace Grocery Bag Ministry.

Bringing Hope to Our Harbor House Neighbors

Grace Outreach Ministries is sponsoring a collection of personal care items for the women and children of Harbor House in New Philadelphia on the Sundays of October 20 and October 27. Collection baskets will be placed in the narthex for your donations. Harbor House is a safe refuge for women and their children seeking to escape an abusive environment. Many have fled from their homes and threatening situations with little more than the clothes on their backs. To help these women and children in their time of need with a gift of hope, we are seeking contributions of soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, facial tissues, feminine hygiene products and other personal care items. Thank you all for your Christian care and compassion.

Autumn Praise Bob Hostetler, Guideposts

I praise you, Lord, for autumn: for falling temperatures and morning chill, trees turned gold and red, brown and orange, falling leaves and blowing leaves, the smell of burning leaves, the joy of leaf-pile jumping.

I praise you, Lord, for autumn: the interplay of outside temperatures and inside warmth, the promise of cider and pumpkin bread, the blessing of blankets and sweaters.

I praise you, Lord, for autumn: the beauty and hope in the change of season, the promise that the coming of autumn heralds another ending, a new beginning, and the wonder of another winter, another spring, another summer.

GROCERY BAG MINISTRY

Thanks to all who have volunteered to be packers for the Grocery Bag Ministry this year.

Donations to the Food Pantry have increased in response to a greater need for our food bags. In August, we distributed 121 bags, and have already distributed 108 in September. We are seeing a greater demand for this outreach program. Monetary and food donations are very much appreciated.

What goes into a bag to feed the hungry? The basic food items are: peanut butter, canned meat, vegetables, fruit, cereal, soup, macaroni & cheese, canned white potatoes, spaghetti sauce and spaghetti noodles. We also pack a roll of toilet paper and a bar of soap when available.

We welcome all packaged/canned donations. We will pack any kind of soup, fruit, vegetable, soap or toilet paper that is donated, as well as extra items not on the list. Grocery size paper bags are also needed.

Thank you to all who bring food in for the grocery bags that are filled each month. Look in the Sunday

bulletins to see which items are most

urgently needed.

Please take a moment to review the names on our church prayer list. If you know the current recovery status, condition, or needs of any person listed, please advise Pastor Rice or the church office. Thank you to the volunteers who prepared and delivered food to the Homeless Shelter on September 22nd, 2019.

October’s dinner at the Homeless Shelter is on Sunday, Oct. 27th, at 6:00 pm. The sign-up sheet is posted in the Narthex. We have cut down on the expense of the items needed (less meat, more casseroles) or have divided the donations into smaller units to make it financially easier for you to donate. Please check to see how you can help.

OUTREACH NEWS… HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO BE A BLESSING TO OTHERS

We at Grace have volunteered to provide one meal per month — the 4th Sunday of each month — and need volunteers to provide the meal and to deliver it to the Friends of the Homeless of Tuscarawas County which is a group of concerned citizens from various churches and social service agencies in the county who have recognized the need to assist persons experiencing homelessness. The residents eat dinner at 6:00 each evening. All tableware is provided by the shelter, and they ask that if we are just dropping the food off to bring it in disposable pans.

If you are unable to deliver your portion of the meal, please contact someone else who has signed up to deliver food.

Let’s continue to work together as the body of Christ and serve our brothers and sisters in need.

New sign up sheets are posted for the November’s meal to the homeless shelter. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the narthex.

Replenishing the Children’s Worship Bags Our worship bag continues to be a blessing to children and parents in our worship each week! Most of the 10 bags are used every Sunday. The bags serve as a way for parents to have their young children in worship with them while they get a chance to worship. We will be purchasing new books, toys and crayons for the bags soon. If you would be interested in providing money for the purchase of these items you may make a donation by placing it in a special offering envelope with worship bags written on it. If paying by check please remember to write Children’s Worship Bags in the memo line. Thank you for continuing to support this ministry.
