Maurice G

t the age o
f 29, he was issued w
ith a F
rench pilo

February 1912.
Alm
ost a year late
r, he broke all existing records fo
r speed, dura
tion and
distance flying in a C
lement-B
ayard aeroplane and became know
n as the w
orld's most daring aviator. H
e became th
e chief p
ilot o
f the C
audron aircraft factory in
France, giving many displays o
f flying skill.
He bought fo
r himself a
Bleriot m
onoplane th
at w
as specially designed to
loop th

Australia w
as to be the first m

tour. A
erobatic shows th

could be performed by G
uillaux' Bleriot w
ere extremely popular: the F

dolphe Celestin P

rilling crow

ere so popular that fro
m A
ugust 20 1913 to th
e end o
f the year
there
were over 500 stories about h

e A
ustralian newspapers.
Guillaux'
main
inte

was
to
make
money,
and in
th

was
very successful. H

m
April to
the beginning of July he covered m

There w

pecial cards were printed and sold to
th

nfortunately, Wizard
crashed his aeroplane in R
ockhampton
racing against an automobile and he w
recked his flying machine beyond repair
and left h

As he had no replacement aircraft, the flight w
as cancelled and th

Maurice G

what
had been earlier planned with

historic flig

departure, Guillaux
was giving dem

over M

atching crowds, th

selling a

On 16 July 1914 a

Maurice G
uillaux took off in high spirits fro
m th

grounds in
Flem

r Sydney, seated on his flim
sy under —
powered B
leriot XI aircraft th
at w
as controlled by wing w
arping. The journey took 2 days, 5 hours and 43 m
inutes, and he carried 1785 postcards (A
ustralia's first air mail) w
ith som
e Lipton's Tea and some O
T lemon cordial
(Australia's first air freight). A
t the tim

as the longest such flight in the w

ever, two w

the
collective historic mem
